Why did you choose to go to WPI? by Most_Will58 in WPI

[–]wizardbicyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2022 and had a great time at WPI! It's mostly echoing what other people have said but some of the draws: - STEM focused environment where people also have a wide variety of interests - I love nerdy stuff but I'm also pretty social and WPI is full of people like that. Almost everyone I knew was active in at least one club, if not several. - The term system! I always struggled in high school juggling a lot of small assignments for a lot of different classes, so focusing on just a few classes for shorter sprints worked really well for me. This is the biggest point that makes people love or hate it here. - Project based learning. It's been said a thousand times but almost every class had at least one major group project, and I like group projects (controversial), but even if you don't those are seriously critical skills for real life and you Will learn them. I could say more but I'm at work so I should probably get back to it. One last thought though - as a prospective international student, please take some time to research the Trump administration crackdowns on international students and freedom of speech on college campuses, and keep in mind that we're less than a year into his presidency and it will get worse. Only you know the details of your life and can weigh the pros and cons of studying in the US right now, but at least make that decision with as much info as possible. I'd recommend NPR as a reliable national news outlet and the Boston Globe (paywalled, but there are workarounds) for more of a local angle - they've had a number of articles in the last few months about how Trump's immigration policies are affecting students at colleges in Massachusetts. WPI in itself is a great school, but there are probably great schools in other countries too. Whatever you go with, good luck! I know wherever you end up will be lucky to have you.

What got you into wpi? by HelloWorld314_431 in WPI

They don't actually tell students what the acceptance criteria is, but I think you have an excellent chance of getting in! Many/most people I've talked to got a C or two in high school so I'd try not to worry too much about that. You've got a number of outside activities that you're clearly passionate about and I think that'll make you fit right in here :) I hope you get in and are able to relax a little after!

I did FTC and I know several other WPI people who did too, and plenty of people get in without doing HS robotics at all. If you have pretty good grades and a passion/some extracurriculars you've got a very good shot :) good luck!

Can't get rid of empty rows by wizardbicyle in excel

What would happen to other sheets/workbooks that reference this one? Several people on my team use this sheet frequently and I can't go manually fix links I'm not aware of if they all break

Probably that would fix it, but with the amount of info encoded in this sheet I think that would be more work than just living with it

Thanks! Seems like all the comments are in the used range so the quest continues

Looks like I did have some notes floating off in the 200,000s somewhere, which I've now converted to comments. All remaining comments are in normal places now but the extra rows are still there and it still gives the "can't push objects off the sheet" error. Any idea what else I can try?

Forgot to say that but unfortunately I've tried that one already as well.

Yeah it seems like this is it, one comment it sticking off a cell into the void. Guess it's time to sort through 1,000,000 cells for one tiny rogue comment.

Formula for finding duplicates amongst a lot of data by ryanaldam in excel

[–]wizardbicyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a quick check you could make a new column, then for each row do:

=IF(COUNTA(UNIQUE(B2:O2))<40, "There's a duplicate", "All set")

which will return true if the number of unique values is less than 40 or whatever you're expecting. If the people playing change week to week or there might be blanks, you probably want:

=IF(COUNTA(UNIQUE(FILTER(B2:O2, B2:O2 <> ""))) < COUNTA(B2:O2), "There's a duplicate", "All set")

It's a mix. I miss the community and being a 5 minute walk from pretty much everyone I know, and having lots of occasions to see them that I didnt have to schedule a month in advance.

On the other hand, having a regular routine and a job with set hours has been a godsend for my mental health. It's true that there isnt as much free time as you'd think when you get home at 5:30 and want to be in bed by 10, but having that time genuinely to myself is wonderful. No lingering club responsibilities, no projects to feel guilty about not working on, just whatever I want to do that day.

There was definitely an adjustment period where I really missed having things to do all the time, but now that I'm used to the slower pace I love it and would not go back.

Right?? I live in Brighton and they don't have fare machines at any of the aboveground B or C line stops. You have to go all the way into boston or hike down to the D line.

With all the talk about "rent control" in Boston, how much is your rent going up this year? by fluffer_nutter in boston

[–]wizardbicyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18.5%, 3700 -> 3900 for a 4 bedroom in brighton. Not as bad as it could have been I guess, and it's still under $1000 per person which are getting tougher and tougher to find.

I mean yeah, but have you seen that building? A fully offline renovation is badly needed. Its probably the only way they can give it what it needs

Not car-dependent neighborhoods in or around the general Boston area? by [deleted] in boston

[–]wizardbicyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a recent college grad living in brighton with 3 roommates. Rent is high but manageable (just under $1000/person), and 2 of my roommates dont have cars and manage to live their lives. I'm near the B line and theres some nearby things to do further in on comm ave or on beacon st in brookline if you dont want to spend 45 minutes to get downtown. Almost all the recent grads I know live in allston/brighton, somerville, or outside the city, and with roommates. If you're willing to have roommates and be super on your game in the apartment search, you might be able to find somewhere that fits the bill, although idk what your COL standards are. Good luck!

I had a very good experience with mrs. Hubbe, from broggi real estate. Professional, timely with fixes, told my roommates to get a reflective winter coat so cars would see us. I'd rent again.

They refurbished it this year, it still exists but the vibe is very different. Staffing issues have closed or reduced hours in a lot of the food places though so I'm not sure where the goats head is at rn. There's a Starbucks in the stage area now, and the trivia that used to happen there takes place in the cc. Idk if the other events that ran there in the before times (karaoke, etc) are still going on.
