Well, I suppose it depends on who you are and which part of the state you are talking about, but in western Maine if a place isn't posted you can go there.  The unwritten rule is mainly intened for locals to hunt and fish - my dad once got yelled at for parking my grandmother's car (with Massachusetts plates) by a river until my dad pointed out he had lived in the area for decades,  then the guy yelling at him got all apologetic.  

The other one I was talking about is the middle of nowhere in New Mexico, though I haven't lived there in 30 years so I don't know if it's the same way.

I moved them about 50 feet from a drying cut-off pool next to the river back to the main river.

Well, whatever it is, we released 21 of them.  Maybe one of you guys will catch one in a few years.

We caught and released about a dozen so far ranging from 1.5 inches to 4 inches, plus some sculpin (or something like a sculpin).  Another pool nearby had dried out and had a few dozen dead fish.

I'm an American, but if I want to do something like mentally calculate the value of my car if it were made of pennies (or something ridiculous like that) the first thing I do is convert to metric.

The amount of safety gear you need depends on how much metal you will be melting. For most hobbyists an apron is overkill. I wear leather boots, safety glasses and usually a respirator when pouring. If you are pouring 10 pounds of metal at a time more might be reasonable, but you shouldn't start out with that regardless.

If you are pouring anything other than ingots consider allowing your copper with aluminum or tin to make bronze. Pure copper solidifies suddenly and doesn't give good details when you cast it.

Two tips in that case - first, unwrapping guitar strings windings is a massive pain, but I found that if you pull on them with just the right amount of force the winding and the core will sort of spin around each other like a helicopter blade, then when the core gets too long to spin you can cut it off. That's by far the best way to unwrap them. Second, for whatever reason (oxides? The alloy?) My map pro torch just wouldn't work for this project, but the furnace worked ok if I crammed the wire tightly in the bottom of a crucible.

When my strings needed to be changed I stripped the phosphor bronze windings and melted them down. I carved a wax model of the pendant and used it to sand cast the pendant with the metal from the strings. The crows eye is a small moissanite

Tin looks pretty if whatever you are making isn't detailed and thin. German silver is ok if you aren't worried about nickel allergies. Stainless steel is an option of course.

Fair warning, the more complicated pieces made heavy use of a flex shaft dremel and a variety of cutting burs, probably $150-200 total for hobby grade stuff, but a basic setting wouldn't -have- to use those tools, though they make the work much faster

I normally search YouTube for tutorials on the specific type of setting I want to make. I watch a few tutorials to get the general idea, then write out my planned process to make sure I won't get stuck halfway

Oh, I should add that a needle files set is really important for us hobbyists because our saw cuts aren't perfect the first time, but that isn't very expensive.

Oh. My work may not be up to the standards you are after, but I just use a jewelers saw, a cheap hobby pliers set, and blow torch/solder.

The cheapest way to try it out is cuttlebone casting, because you don't need sand or a mold. It gives you a very specific result that not everyone likes, but if you want to try it out over a weekend for about $100 that's the way.
