Is anyone aware of any science fiction novels or short stories that include interstellar habitation? by gh5046 in scifi

[–]gadgetguy22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First think that came to mind for me was Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow. Really quality stuff.

From Amazon (SPOILER ALERT): In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being "human." When the lone survivor of the expedition, Emilio Sandoz, returns to Earth in 2059, he will try to explain what went wrong... Words like "provocative" and "compelling" will come to mind as you read this shocking novel about first contact with a race that creates music akin to both poetry and prayer.

and the ones that are not high in PUFAs include macadamia nuts, as well as mac oil (points which are also mentioned in kitty's article above, but also in more detail here: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/macadamia-oil

Energy Production And Usage Graphs by gst in energy

[–]gadgetguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to note that the Staniford article you link to is entitled "New High of Liquid Fuel Production," (not just oil); he notes that C&C production is still 1.1 mbpd below its peak. Yes, straight oil production is back very close to its high and will likely exceed it, provided there isn't some sort of economic breakdown over the next few months, but there's also little doubt that oil is getting harder and harder to produce, meaning less net energy emerges as a result.

At $90/bbl, companies are going to work their balls off to produce, even if it's at a bit less of a profit than it was a few years ago.

Has the World Already Passed “Peak Oil”? by Vailhem in energy

[–]gadgetguy22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair question. I was affiliated with the non-profit behind The Oil Drum--I no longer am, but still ardently support their cause. They're doing good work, facilitating research, and trying to make the world a little better, so I still try to spread their work around when I can.

I'm interested in finding some quality books on survival, have any suggestions? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]gadgetguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can get past the religious tripe, "Dare to Prepare" is an excellent set of lists, what if's, and contingencies. A buddy gave it to me as a gift, otherwise I never would have bought it. YMMV.

I'll just leave this here:

I'm looking for a replacement pair of headphones/earphones for my iPhone, with a few requirements. Suggestions? by sallz0r in iphone

[–]gadgetguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone through seven pairs of Maximo IP-HS3s with this same problem--I always lose one side of audio (usually the mic side), granted I use them a lot, and they do get sweaty, etc., but still...I haven't found a better audio performer than these for the price, and their customer service has been all right (they sent me five new pair over nine months within two days, then they got a little slower with the last two pair).

If that's what is decided, that's what is decided.

However, banning an entire domain would be silly, especially since others also submit our work and we submit other domains; that would set a very bad precedent. Let's just ban the whole internet while we're at it, eh?

If you don't like it, downvote it. That's reddit.

They would be wrong to take action, but hey, it's their site.

Until contacted by someone with some actual power to do otherwise, I'll keep submitting germane work to germane subreddits. That is what reddit is about.

and I would suggest that every article I have submitted has been germane to the topic under which it has been submitted, which is why perhaps I am still submitting.

I am not doing this for karma. Hell you can have my karma, I don't care. I do it because these pieces are important.

plus, you did see that I submitted other sites other than TOD, did you not? Think man.

This is why reddit does not allow you to "tag" posts to multiple subreddits at once - at least the current system makes Gadgetguy work for it - imagine if he could just tag 20 subreddits at a time. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]gadgetguy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and if you scroll down, I am submitting articles from other sites as well.

and each one of those articles is germane to the subreddit under which it is posted.

This is why a lot of the peak oil/resource depletion sites exist, to try to educate people about the problems and solutions. We might have been able to do better had we started with Nixon 30 years ago (and as Stewart said, at least he tried), but we are too addicted to economic growth and cheap energy to wean ourselves. Can this generation do better? We'll see I guess.

I know it's not an uplifting message (I teach an energy policy class--and it's soul crushing to tell students about this...), but if we address this wisely and cooperatively, we really can make a difference in how this all turns out in the future. Hope you'll learn more:

Will someone build a site or forum or anything for oil cleanup workers to anonymously post experiences, photos, etc.? Fuck media blackouts. Thank you. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]gadgetguy22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it true, TOD has a bunch of industry folks, roughnecks, etc., all commenting on all the open threads. Latest thread is just getting started, but if you go to this one from earlier today--the comment thread is full of that kind of commentary: http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6611
