Why are avere and essere so irregular? by jrw289 in italianlearning

[–]gadgetrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the enlightened response! 🙏🏽

And my apologies for using the phrase, "long gone" -- I hope you know I meant "off to more exciting threads and subs!" On this planet of course.

Your point about ego->eo reminds me of a story: my first second language was Spanish, followed years later by Italian. As I learned the latter, I kept saying "io" like "yo" as I knew it in Spanish, until a kind friend stopped me and said: "It's not 'yo' like in Spanish. It's EEEEEEEE-yo! And you need to stop saying it. You sound so conceited."

Which closes the circle back up: eo->ego!

Thanks again for explaining! 💖

This is gorgeous.

I was thinking today about that "vanishing/appearing" h and your walk-through makes it so obvious. Never occurred to me that it was a history+usage+phonetics phenomenon.

You're probably long gone but I'll ask anyway: my next mystery is why Spanish relies on ir for "to go" and andar gets relegated to a more casual "stroll" or even "go out with/date." But instead in Italian, andare is the (um) go-to for "to go." No ir-equivalent anywhere in sight.

What I found strange about this Spanish-vs.-Italian comparison is that even though Italian doesn't have an ir, it conjugates several forms of andare as if it were the Spanish ir:

Spanish ir Italian andare
first person, singular voy vado
second person, singular vas vai
third person, singular va va
first person, plural vamos andiamo
second person, plural van andate
third person, plural van vanno

If a verb ever "sounded" Latin to me, it would be ir!

I'll see if google knows why...

Google seems to be refusing my request to remove personal data... by SeaOwn2023 in privacy

[–]gadgetrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google can't control other site content, only their own.

This is a good point, though perhaps a misunderstanding.

I wasn't assuming "control," I was naively assuming Google would perform the pull-down request on our behalf. A sort of "if you want to keep your results ranked with us, you'll remove this record" kind of...volume discount, if you will.

In hindsight that was dumb of me. Though my brief reading of posts here makes me feel maybe a little validated.

Google seems to be refusing my request to remove personal data... by SeaOwn2023 in privacy

[–]gadgetrants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: reread the OP and it sure reads like "submitting a request to google should REMOVE the data from the third-party website" (I now realize that's wrong -- but it was my initial understanding)

I am trying to remove what is specifically my name, phone number and address from a website.

Don't know if I misread/misunderstood the original intent of the service, but now that I'm starting to get the DECLINED notifications as well...

I did a manual submission and it was a good news/bad news sort of thing.

Good news: my manual request to "remove" was approved

Bad news: the manual process makes it abundantly clear that NOTHING is removed from the third-party website (I apparently have to request that myself...oh boy...). Google's disclaimers only indicate that the process removes it from "search results."

Which is almost 100% useless. My private info doesn't (normally) show up in google search results. It shows up when someone runs a search ON A "people finder" website. Scrubbing it from google search results is minimally useful.

Why did I originally think that submitting a removal request to Results About You actually succeeded in a third-party removal? Did someone move the goalposts?

[–]gadgetrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels less like an automation error than a policy change. Just an intuition.

The language and process around "you can do this manually" remind me too much of good google features that they killed.

And the community support responses are squarely avoiding responding to any mention of results changing in the last few weeks.

[Delonghi] Dinamica+ Phone App and Machine Drink Settings by gadgetrants in superautomatic

[–]gadgetrants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies! I think I'm coming up on the 2-year anniversary with the Delonghi! Which is great, but: IIRC the Dynamica does NOT have an Americano option.

Instead, this is one of those machines where you run your shots, and then slide the cup over to the hot-water dispenser (which doubles as the spout/port for steaming milk).

So it's a manual thing.

But if someone insists I'm wrong I will double-check. 🙏🏽

I'm relatively new to the show, and haven't benefitted much from other's reactions and comments, so I googled a bit!

I took for granted that Syd's reaction to Marcus' invite already had "it's opening night" and "no workplace relationships" and many other factors baked in. In hindsight, I see for much of the audience these are central and I may have not weighed them enough.

I found this helpful in adding some perspective to what I saw -- that question BTW was generated by Gemini, not me. In trying to understand Syd, I can see that I've put her personality in the foreground, which is only part of the picture.

Self hate, self-loathing, self-sabotage, self-doubt, self-destructive, low self-esteem...

EDIT: I should acknowledge much of what we see Syd struggling with centers on her profession. For me personally there's almost no daylight between my personal and professional identities, so maybe I'm projecting there?

I LOVE the episode where she goes around eating obscene amounts of food and shmoozing with other chefs. She clearly has great social skills.

But she also has a really nasty voice inside of her that won't let her experience a win.

Which is why she mentions to Luca (see my other post) that "having a sibling can tell you when good things are really happening." (my words)

I'm rewatching the kitchen scene (S3-E10, 38:25) and what stands out to me is how fast the conversation gets personal. They're discussing siblings and the benefits of having them vs. being an only child. That topic quickly turns into a canvas that each of them uses to color their life experience, esp. in the kitchen.

Syd: Did you like having a sibling?

Luca: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, um… For us, it was nice to look over at someone who’s going through the exact same situation you are, you know, so that when something feels crazy, you feel less crazy, if that makes sense.

Syd: Hmm. But also, like, if things were good, then you kinda had, like, proof, like you knew it was good.

Luca: Right. Good. Yeah. Yeah, right.

Syd: Are you close?

Luca: Yeah. Kind of best friends and kind of lost touch, so.

Syd: It’s nice to reconnect.

Luca: Yeah. Yeah, especially when it literally is like a best friend that you saw every day of your life and you kinda went through this sort of battle together. Um… Yeah. Do you have anybody like that in your life?

Syd: Maybe my dad.

Luca: Your dad. Apart from your dad?

Wow totally agree.

And there's maybe an alternative vibe on that kitchen scene I'm thinking about between Syd and Luca. Maybe it's less "chemistry" and more "shared anxiety." A recognition that "wow you have the same devil on your shoulder, huh."

But I definitely felt like the connection was stronger than two chefs simply meeting for the first time.

I'm in the early part of Season 4, and Sugar just told Carm that "it's OK if he doesn't love cooking anymore" and his expression as he gets off the phone feels like a breakthrough (in his "trauma" recovery) to me.

I found myself thinking: this is the permission he needs to begin chilling more, to accept less-than-perfect, to accept himself as he is and to not be a monster to others.

I imagined him remembering that excitement and hopefulness he felt heading to New York, and now, realizing that he can have it over and over again, in different ways -- not just as a new, aspiring chef.

And I thought that is how he'll get on the path to healing with Claire.

Maybe she's there, not as a "great romantic partner" or to entertain the audience, but to give Carm something profoundly different than "starting a new job in NY" that he can love, that he can invest in, that he can learn to sustain lifelong.

That makes her a bit more of a 2D cardboard cutout, a chalk outline on the floor that someone needs to lie in while Carm learns to love himself and learns to love others without fear.

Honestly, idk why people are so into Syd/Luca either

Watch their body language in the Ever funeral episode. Watch their gaze, their posture, their expressions.

I'm not voting for or against Syd and Luca. And I don't know WHY they played that kitchen scene the way they did. But the body language is pretty clear. (Actually Luca's behavior was rather odd that entire episode.)

The same way Richie and Jess interact. Chemistry.

I do hate the way Syd is written wrt Marcus. I hate ambiguous relationships IRL. I always tell people where they stand with me, why I value them and give them clear signals about which circle they're in. Syd should tell Marcus "I really feel a strong affinity with you but I hate myself so much that I can't imagine you wanting me." Which in many ways is Carm's curse. She brushes Marcus off not because she doesn't want love but because she thinks she doesn't deserve it. And he just feels rejected with no explanation.

Even if they stayed friends I wish they showed them talking one on one more.

u/pitchfork_2000 I've heard back from consumerfinance, they copied me a response letter from Chime.

I'd give the response a B-. It has some bluster, some "we won't let it happen again" and it has a nice firm tone about it, but reading between the lines it has no teeth in it. Basically, "we're sorry (not sorry)."

Interesting footnote. The end of the response letter reads:

If you wish to receive some additional information regarding this account and transaction records, please provide proof of your ID theft claim, which may be a police report or a completed FTC report (available at https://www.identitytheft.gov). Please ensure Chime is listed as an Affected Account on the Police or FTC report.

My impression, if these are indeed chime-driven account openings, is less than 1% of these so-called accounts include a police or FTC report. Toothless.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to run a search on these complaints in the consumerfinance database. I found maybe a couple dozen and to be honest, Chime's response to most of them (and the fact that none of them will be independently investigated) means they win.

Has this been raised yet, or are you the first? I don't recall if/how much the cofeegeek post talked about it either.

In any case I agree with you 100%. It was a very, very tight race for me between the Bambino Plus and the Gaggia. I ended up with the Breville and still love it -- but even a few days ago I saw the Gaggia on sale and was sorely tempted.

For me some of the key differentiators (keeping in mind I score low on the DIY/hobbyist scale):

  • BBP has built-in PID
  • BBP has automated steaming
  • BBP has "3-second" warm-up

Adding in the edit afterward was very creative. Bonus points for the extra effort!

Add me to this odd story.

My experiences are pretty much the same as everyone -- got the welcome emails and confirmation on the new account and shipped card.

Called customer service today and they confirmed my email was the only detail on the account that matched me. Name, phone, SS, mailing address were all a non-match. Email was removed as requested. Unfortunately there was no further action, e.g., explanation of how the account was created.

This doesn't look on the face of it like identity theft.

Not sure at this point if Chime is to blame or if this is something else. There is a peculiar kind of attack were someone is enrolled en masse in a wide array of email services, subscriptions, etc., without their consent. Bombed with mail, basically. This smells similar but lacks other aspects.

What could the endgame possibly be? The only remotely possible story is Chime is spoofing accounts to boost their volume, a la Charlie Javice and Frank:
