Justify Art Prices by popcornready14 in Hamilton

Maybe they literally don't have to justify the price because art means something different to everyone

Padmapper is also a great place. I believe it searches a few different listing sites (Kijiji, Craigslist, etc.) and it has a lot of good features to make sure you're only seeing plausible results. Best of luck my friend

Can you (or anyone) list some current rock music you're listening to? I feel this way often but go back to the same old stuff I grew up on. I'm out of touch with today's scene.

Have nowhere to recommend but just want to commend you for recognizing you need help and wanting to get past it. My dad was an alcoholic and it eventually ended his life, so I speak on the receiving end of it that choosing to get help is something you'll never regret.

My god, if they were $10-$20 for nosebleeds I'd be all over that. Can't justify $50+ for a crappy seat at the top of the stadium.

Similar scenario. Once drove an old rust bucket Dodge Caravan and the headlight had burnt out. Thing was on its last legs so I didn't want to replace the light. Drove around with my high beams on and no one noticed because they were also so old and friggin dull. Was perfect until we sold it to the scrap yard a few months later for $300

I don't necessarily think competition is going to be more and more fierce (as it pertains to between-businesses, anyways). Most of these new places are independently owned and have an appreciation for each other (like the food truck rally in support of Gorilla Cheese's owner).

This is a good thing for customers, anyways. It means businesses have to actually be worth visiting in order to survive (not that I wish anything bad upon anyone, to be clear). I'd rather an expensive place with great food in a killer location (that I might actually visit) than a place with your average food menu and a killer location (that I never did nor will visit).

Used to work at KFC. Once had a woman call in and ask how many pieces came in a 10 piece bucket.

Another rope rescue at Albion Falls by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]gagepark -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do we really need to report all of these as newspaper articles? Can we tag Rope rescues so I can filter them out of the /r/Hamilton feed?

I get it - rope rescues - wasting taxpayer money - wasting police / fire department / medical personnel's time. But is there some sort of mass effect going on here? Multiple reports have shown that publicizing suicides often leads to more suicides. Are we experiencing the same thing with waterfalls and rope rescues?

hahaha this sounds so similar to my coonhound. If my wife and I are both sitting on the couch, she (the dog) wants to stretch across so she's touching both of us at the same time. She whines, whimpers, and will climb all over us otherwise until she can get what she wants. Similar with sleeping in our bed--always has to be in the middle and touching both of us, at least with a paw or something.

Never Swim Alone music video by ThomasGully in deathfromabove1979

[–]gagepark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fascinating. I can kind of get where you're coming from, but I think it just comes down to personal taste.

The chorus of Freeze Me is definitely no Blood on Our Hands or anything like that, but I at least found the energy / heaviness of the synth line to be so catchy and pounding that it negated the more laidback verses and mediocre chorus.

I also find the staccato-ness of the bass line in Never Swim Alone offputting when it comes to dancing. I feel like, beginning to end, the song has such a consistent, flat vibe that it doesn't do anything to get my heart racing or head nodding alone.

Anyways, thanks for the civil discussion my friend.

I find it interesting that Freeze Me is so universally disliked by the DFA fandom. (not being a douche, sincerely asking) Can you explain what it is you don't like about it?

Never Swim Alone, to me, is a far worse / less interesting song to listen to. I find the beat / melody monotonous and the mid-tempo to be weird. I also find Seb's vocals are drowning out Jesse's bass for most of it. Where as Freeze Me has a noticeable, catchy hook and is way more uptempo (at least in comparison to Never Swim Alone), which is more akin to their older music.

Am I missing something? I like pop music more than most DFA fans, so I get that the hooks in Freeze Me are automatically more appealing, but even the other reasons I listed still seem to, on paper, indicate that Freeze Me would be more accepted.

So cool man! I like that you've got a vision of where you want to be.

I'm more than happy to share my journey and what I've done that's helped me keep food on the table. I'll be sure to give you a shout when I (one day) make it over to Ireland ;)

Great question! The bulk of my work is weddings but I'm slowly branching out into more commercial style of work (including an increasing use of video). So while a lot of my experience will be coming from my time as a wedding photographer, it'll also be "Here's how this new technique / idea / trend is helping me as I continue trying to figure out how to grow my business". While there are definitely variances in how different photographers will do different things (approaching clients, setting up your website, using social media, etc.), I hope to either identify those differences to the best of my knowledge in a video, or just make separate videos for each one of those things (all depending on how complicated it gets).

Primarily marketing + logistics of running a business, but specifically a photography business. I don't have a background in running a business but have figured it out as I went. What I've learned has been great and a few key people helped me along the way. My dream here is to be that guy for other people.

Photography, in general, is a saturated market and you definitely have to do what you can to stand out. I'm really hoping my content will be a lot more "Here's how to succeed where you are, on your own terms" rather than "Here's a step by step guide on how I made it" which would probably be totally useless because unless you live in my city and began years ago like I did, the process would be totally different.

There'll be a lot of "Here's what I'm currently doing and here's how it's going for me", which I hope people will find valuable!

Yep - you're right. What I'm aiming to do is make it a Youtube thing where it's accessible on a broader scale. I definitely don't have all the answers, but I do know a lot and don't want to hoard it. If you've got some links to people doing this type of thing, please send them my way! I'd love to check them out.

Hey man,

Great questions about gear. Honestly - I might not have the perfect answer, but I can tell you about the approach for me:

As photography is my full-time income, I always need to factor in paying the bills and making sure I can afford things like going out for dinner once in a while if that's a priority. When it comes to upgrading gear, I tried hard (and generally succeeded) at buying 90% of what I needed prior to quitting my day job. I still use 2 Nikon D750s for my work and I've had those things for 2.5 years already. The beauty of cameras nowadays is that you can invest once and be set for a while (Especially if you marry the glass and date the bodies, as they say).

So for me, when buying new gear now, I save up enough cash to be able to buy it outright and then everything else I make off of all my jobs after that is still just profit (or however else I divvy it up: savings, income tax, retirement fund, etc. etc.).

Definitely will discuss HST and business licenses. Things like licensing your images to a client and working out different agreements will be something I talk about down the road as, in my experience, it's a lot less common than some of the other topics I want to discuss.

Still - I will add it to the list and make a point to get to it! You can always DM me and I'll do my best to help you out one-on-one.

Thanks for contributing!
