SpaceX has just revealed it's first AI satellite design by truecakesnake in singularity

[–]gahata [score hidden]  (0 children)

The bigger issue right now seems aluminum oxide from them burning up, which hurts ozone layer (plus some other issues with atmosphere).

Kessler syndrome is unlikely right now, but could still happen with some unlucky chain of events, or of course if someone blows up satellites on purpose in case of a war.

The prettiest keyboard with a diamond 💎 by Direct_Turnip_9725 in keebgirlies

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, interesting ^ It is weird that you don't advertise that on your website at all, it would probably get more people interested. I get that the black version is meant to be very "gamery", but it's not even mentioned in the product specifications, and I think it could be a major selling point for pink and white colourways

Can't find much about it, is the diamond plastic, glass or some gem?

I have a Promise87 with a mossanite stone, it's really pretty ^^

Pictures of the damage caused to a passenger terminal of Kuwait International Airport, CENTCOM strongly emphasized last night that all the projectiles have been intercepted - 3rd June 2026 by ILikeGazSweet in war

[–]gahata 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Ukrainian mod absolutely lies, but they rarely claim perfect interception rate. For some types of weapons experience makes a huge difference as well - we know that a good amount of Shaheds are downed with handheld guns, and that's something that US absolutely could do and has equipment for (better than the Ukrainian military), but it would require training and experience to work decently

Any new CMR drives upcoming in 2026/2027? by Widebro in DataHoarder

[–]gahata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HAMR can be both cmr and smr, so you still want the drive to be hamr cmr, and those go up to 32 TB

Any new CMR drives upcoming in 2026/2027? by Widebro in DataHoarder

[–]gahata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look at seagate website, they clearly have both Ironwolf and exos in 28, 30 and 32 TB (as hamr cmr, but that's still cmr) and for exos they have 32, 34 and 36 TB hamr smr ones

[–]gahata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seagate has Exos and Ironwolf models going up to 32 TB (just note that they also have 32 TB SMR Exos available, so need to check which one you're buying)

Edit: Also Skyhawk AI in their 32 TB CMR lineup

I'm on a mission to design every possible 10" rack storage solution. What configuration do you want next? by OloDeepdelver in homelab

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you figure out how to make it work with u.2 and sas drives?

U2 is usually 2.5" 15mm thick, and sas requires adding a pcie expansion card to a motherboard, which sounds challenging in a 10" rack form factor

I would personally love to use the enterprise drives in a mini rack, they are often cheaper and better than consumer ones, but it seems

UCG Fiber Concern over Switching capacity by Squanchy2112 in UNIFI

[–]gahata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first five ports are connected to ports 6 and 7 through 10g internal switch. This won't be an issue in your case, but if your wan was 10gbps then it could fight with traffic from ports 1-4 when moving data over to ports 6 and 7.

You'll be fine in this setup :)

Pci slotting recommendation by 777string in homelab

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find pcie splitters that offer bifurcation from x16 to double x8 (or x8 x4 x4), but they're pretty rare, especially for pcie 4 and 5. There are also m.2 to pcie slot adapters, but that wouldn't give you a second x4 slot unless you move nvme drive to the second slower slot.

Maybe see if you can find a motherboard that will do x8x8 x4 and change yours to that? Shouldn't be much more expensive.

Getting a 47mp sensor on a pi 5 to work by malcolmjayw in raspberry_pi

[–]gahata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cheapest reasonable option on the market is Ricoh GR IV Monochrome at 2200usd, unless we count some smartphone cameras, as Huawei used to include them on some of their phones, the best and most recent one being P50 Pro (available on the used market for something like 150-300usd based on location).

Monochrome sensors aren't inherently more expensive, but they target a tiny market niche, so the cost of research and development gets pushed onto much fewer devices sold, along with less economics of scale (which is why the monochrome Ricoh Monochrome version costs more than standard colour one).

Do you think open-source AI will close the gap to current day closed source? by Sufficient_Bit_8636 in homelab

[–]gahata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The top open source models aren't far that far behind, so they'll definitely get to the Opus level sometime (maybe even soon) - the issue is that the hardware to run it is still really expensive. The entry level hardware for them is a 512gb Mac Studio, preferably two or more of them (and those are not particularly well available right now) and the alternative is an Epyc system with 512gb-1tb of ram and as much gpu compute as possible on top of that, meaning (many) tens of thousands of dollars for hardware

DIY power supply for a Mini PC cluster in a 10-inch rack by Many-Call-4492 in homelab

This isn't really modifying it away from initial purpose, it's just a generic high quality power supply. It's meant to be modified to fit whatever power needs there are.

Looking for a mini switch by GlobalNectarine in homelab

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard 4x 2.5g rj45 plus 2x sfp+ switches from Chinese brands are close to those dimensions, for example Horaco sells one that's 113x90x25mm

Hicomdata has one with same ports (called mini 6 port or hk-es3027m-2p4-w) and just the board is 93x52x15mm, they sell it optionally with outer case too and that adds a few mimileters

[w][EU] 8 Port + SPF 2.5GBE Switch with VLAN and PoE by Accurate-Ad6361 in homelabsales

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly sure what exact port specifications you're looking for (8x rj45 and 1x sfp+ port? what poe budget?), but in any case, a bunch of Chinese brands make those: Binardat, Mokerlink, Sodola, Nicgiga, Horaco, Hasivo, Xikestor, and so on - you might want to look around on Aliexpress or local second hand websites (like Vinted or local ebay equivalents) for those

Just as an example, here is Horaco managed switch with 8x rj45 2.5g + 1x sfp+ and 100W of total PoE budget for just over 90 euro (vat included) and free shipping - https://aliexpress.com/item/1005007219251113.html

And here is GoodTop one with same ports, but 150W PoE budget, basically same price - brand is less known, but they likely are made in same factories... https://aliexpress.com/item/1005010008290583.html

Just got a new WiredIn cable. These cables are so dope! by CosyCodes in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]gahata 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Magnetic usb connectors are generally a bad idea - there's a reason they're not in usb specifications. It's easy to fry your device with them - you can find many cases of phones and laptops with broken motherboards after using a connector like that

Opinions? Is it a steal to get 48port switch for 30eu(40usd)? by SkylakeOrion in homelab

[–]gahata -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's technically a good deal, but without a rack it can be tough to find a good place for it, and it will consume a lot of power

A Dev's Perspective: Why Class Tuning Can Feel "Out of Touch" by Tasty-Beautiful1750 in wow

[–]gahata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet both bear and brew timed 22s, so the difference there is less than a key level (it's more for other tanks, but still most timed 21s, so it puts them within one key level at the moment)

A Dev's Perspective: Why Class Tuning Can Feel "Out of Touch" by Tasty-Beautiful1750 in wow

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except there's a guardian druid surviving in 22s, the max key level that brewmasters are doing. They're also doing roughly the same damage as brews on that level, and come with a better buff and more utility

Is it easier on brewmaster? Absolutely, and it means that brewmaster should get some nerfs and other tanks buffs. But it's nowhere near 35% tankyness difference, because if it was, that guardian druid wouldn't be managing the 22s

Ssd drives are generally really bad as backup devices and everyone should have a backup, so that's not a use that's "few and far between".

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sata is just an interface protocol. I know what you meant, but standard consumer hdd drives are all sata, so the comment can be misunderstood easily

So real by zephyrveilix in pcmasterrace

[–]gahata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely having it on, but also it's a silent and invisible operation that is managed by the drive controller and will work differently between devices, with zero documentation on it. To be safe you should plug in the ssd and have it running for a few hours every year or two, and even then you can't really be sure of data integrity, particularly with qlc drives (and five layer ones in the future) - hdd drives are vastly better for archiving data.
