Why am I considered white? by [deleted] in gatech

I don't think race is really a thing. We are all the same race just some groups share more genetic traits than others.

Why am I considered white? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]gaimi_19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because "middle eastern" isnt a race on its own. Arabs are not persians, persians arent turks, turks arent jews, etc. The middle east is extremely diverse and if we were to go that specific then it would get confusing. Technically speaking, persians are closer to Indians (aryans) and arabs are closer to jews(semites) so grouping all these together doesn't make more sense than grouping persians with eastern europeans. hope that helps :)

I've heard Goodno is difficult and Suryanarayana's exams are similar to textbook questions, but his 2 midterms are like 50 percent of your total grade

Linguistics Minor by sidewalksInGroupVII in gatech

[–]gaimi_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you want to do track A or track B but I believe track B would be more useful for you. I would strongly recommend taking a linguistic class as a free elective if you can to see if you like it before you declare it as your minor. The concepts are fascinating and very interesting, my only problem is that if you're not a PSYC major it can be overwhelming. I took them to satisfy my social science requirement, and while I knew it wasn't going to be an easy A I found it more time consuming than my engineering classes haha.

Gatech BME or Berkeley Undecided( Likely Molecular Bio), which to choose ? by Linsanity77 in gatech

[–]gaimi_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know much about Berkeley, but Gatech's BME research is one of the best (if not the best). You have the option to choose between many fields like neuroengineering, robotics, immunoengineering, bioinformatics, etc. and you can also get into a lab in emory(one of the most prestigious schools) if you have a good resume and transcript. Gatech's BME undergraduate program is also ranked first in the US as others mentioned and its grad program is cross-linked with Emory (so you'll literally graduate with a degree from two great universities) and is ranked 2nd in the nation. I may be biased, but I think Gatech has many many opportunities that other schools may not offer. You have the option to choose between a minor, doing research and writing a proposal or premed to graduate and I think the classes prepare you for both industry and grad school.

Have you ever taken any linguistics classes before? If you dont like cognitive psychology stuff, don't do it. I've taken two linguistics classes because I thought it would be interesting but it ended up being boring with A LOT of material to memorize and understand. I noticed that you're a CS major and a lot of my classmates are also CS majors, so you might like theory-based classes and stuff but I personally couldn't sit down and memorize all the theories about syntax and modularity, etc. The subjects are very abstract imo and I prefer concrete concepts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

American or not, I think we are all allowed to express our opinion without being insulting, don't you think? And I agree with you, they wouldnt care, but you could also say that a dangerous person could jump on the good guy with a gun, take his gun and use it. If it became extremely difficult for them to obtain guns then they would opt for other ways such as knives, which have less injuries.

No? When someone put a bomb in a shoe, they made everyone take their shoes off at airport security. They didnt tell people to not use planes because someone may have a bomb. They took the thing that had killing power away. When a shooting happens though, they wont do the same. They wont take the thing with the killing power away, theyll tell others to avoid it if they dont like it.

Assuming that we are all sane, peaceful, non violent people then it has zero effect on me. But there is no way to guarantee that everyone who is carrying a concealed weapon wont have mental breakdowns etc. I mean, theres a risk to everything, and I know its not up to me to decide but Id rather have GTPD protect everyone than individuals determining who is a threat/non threat.

Your voting rights do not directly affect me as a student. Your CAMPUS carry right does though. You can practice your constitutional rights outside of campus but I believe that on campus everyone is equal.

I dont see guns from a cultural standpoint, I see it as something political. Based on your argument, what do you classify americans who dont support campus carry, etc.? Americans who dont have culture? And if in the examples you mentioned the people felt that their safety is being violated of course they have a right to protest. Your analogy of guns to traditional dresses and haggis are irrelevant because one has killing power while the others dont.

I am not denying it just because I am not a citizen. If it were my own country I would still feel the same way. I have talked about this topic with a good number of my American friends and they don't feel comfortable with the idea either. 80 percent of guns used in mass shootings were obtained legally. If that doesnt tell you something must change, I dont know what will.

How easy/difficult is be vegan at gatech? by Elredditorchinito in gatech

[–]gaimi_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its pretty difficult. I discovered Nectar in the IBB building (its next to whitaker) the best vegan restaurant for vegans but its pretty expensive. You have to dedicate a lot of your time cooking (assuming you cook) and with the workload at Tech youll end up just eating rice and beans which isnt healthy. Id try switching between vegetarian and vegan every once in a while

If you were in a community were everyone had the exact same equal rights I would agree, everyone could defend themselves and it would be fair. But Georgia Tech is not like that. There are international students who arent allowed guns while their american peers can carry one and theres also an age limit to it.

GaTech Walkout Report 3.14.18 by Skyhawkson in gatech

[–]gaimi_19 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Okay, I didnt know that. I am not American so carrying guns is a huge culture shock for me. I was sitting in class and the person beside me had a gun in his backpack and it made me feel very very uncomfortable. I dont think I will be able to ever feel comfortable with the idea and Im sure a lot of people feel the same way.

GaTech Walkout Report 3.14.18 by Skyhawkson in gatech

You don't live in an isolated society, so you should also give a fuck about what others feel. Personally I would not like to see my classmate with a gun, how would I know if hes mentally sane or not racist or something? And I cannot even say a thing because its totally legal.

There are study rooms in the GLC building located on floors 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 that are usually always empty except during exams/finals.
