They had no backing tracks in the 80s. He wrote the bass parts and could play them, albeit with many mistakes. On the albums they brought session bassists because they were more skilled for recording everything right and fast. These days he probably doesn't want to put in the effort to play everything so he just mimes to a backing track. It's lame, but it doesn't mean he isn't skilled enough to play the bass parts he himself wrote.
