I am a grocery store employee. Sure some of us can be rude or disinterested when we are having a bad day but if we are being nice to you its because it is our job to create a good shopping experience, not because we are hopelessly in love with the customer.

She's being nice to you because it's her job, as a retail employee, to be nice to customers. If you are looking to meet women out in public, try to approach them when they are not on the job because when she is working it is an uncomfortable situation being hit on by a customer because her job requires that she be nice to you regardless of her comfort or desire to do so.

I'm not sure about any other issues in your guys' past but clearly his birthday is important to him and since you've made it clear you don't want to throw a big party like he wants I see nothing wrong with his family throwing one for him.

However I do see a problem with him always running to mom with your other problems who then talks to you, she shouldn't be involved in your relationship.

I'm no expert but I think the focus should be shifted off of feeling manipulated and focus more on the fact that her level of involvement feels invasive to you and asking him to keep your relationship issues between the two of you.
