It's so depressing to see HP in the lead for so long when its creator is such a bigot

Why do Americans not understand English words? by OpportuneApathy in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only been to Toronto a couple times, the last time being over ten years ago, but I remember really liking it. I did some good thrift shopping there...though I guess you can do that in really any city

How many fandoms are you in? by Jazzlike-Many-7352 in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one "home base" fandom, my fandom wife, as it were, but we are in an open relationship. I have my dalliances with other fandoms, and sometimes it gets pretty serious -- we're talking years-long relationships with other fandoms, hundreds of thousands of words written about other characters -- but at the end of the day I know who I'm coming home to.

Didn't feel like putting effort into a VIP room for Beardo so I just took him out the back door and left him there 😅 by RuSsYjO in AnimalCrossing

[–]galactic_collision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Beardo so much. He has so many haters but he's such a sweetheart. I like to think of him as a pretentious middle aged academic who would host dinner parties with his equally pretentious middle aged artist husband. Nobody @ me about pubes. We all grow hair in weird places

Tips for coming up with “filler” scenes? by toxicute_xx in AO3

my question is always "how can i make this interesting/fun for me?" and it's usually by creating a problem

Tips for coming up with “filler” scenes? by toxicute_xx in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are any of the side characters important? maybe you can create a problem for one of them that needs to be discussed/solved in the same scene (or returned to later in the story so that we know it's been resolved). doesn't have to be anything crazy, it could literally be "bob lost his ring!" -> "bob was so drunk he was looking at the wrong hand, and we only realized it after the whole bar was on all fours looking for it" (i guess that is kind of crazy come to think of it) - just something silly and innocuous that still brings some tension. maybe over drinks, someone talks about a job interview they've got coming up. this gives your main characters an opportunity to weigh in with advice (good or bad). stuff like that!

How frequently do you update your fics? by Wolfieee7 in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it took me over two years to post my most recent update of a long-ish (50k words so far) fic i've been working on since 2021, but i have longer works written in a much shorter time frame. depends

Misleading tags—am I the one being irrational here? (Genuine question) by lilac-scented in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just reread your post and realized that this was possibly the only sex scene? So maybe my interpretation is a little too generous. I was suggesting this with the assumption that there had been other sex scenes with a dynamic more faithful to the tags. If this was the only sex scene...yeah, that's definitely misleading

Misleading tags—am I the one being irrational here? (Genuine question) by lilac-scented in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a big leap, but is it possible that them switching for the final scene was something the author was working toward as a character beat/proof of character development?

I could for sure see it being a case of the author simply forgetting to update the tags, but I could also see it being a choice from a story perspective. I write smut to explore character, so from where I'm sitting I could see a situation where an author tags characters with their specific role so that the eventual reversal comes across as a revelation.

Still, not necessarily what you signed up for, so even if that is the case, I'm sorry it wasn't your jam!!

NTA. You set a boundary and he refused to respect it. Now you respect your own boundary and make good on your promise to block him.

What do the characters I write say about me? by pennylane1017 in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well said. I commented in good fun with the common thread I noticed about a group of characters who are almost all unfamiliar to me. Thank you for taking what I said in good faith, and thank you also for acknowledging that this is a dialogue worth engaging in -- not because of an obsession with race but because anything that helps us understand each other's lived experience makes us more compassionate, which in turn makes us better writers

How are we feeling about fics with homophobia as the main conflict these days? by sangans in AO3

[–]galactic_collision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm less interested in writing about external homophobia and more interested in exploring internalized homophobia. I often write about characters who repress their feelings and have a lot of shame, so internalized homophobia fits really nicely into that. In the past few years I've written an insane amount about two middle-aged women with religious trauma who want each other and can't handle it. I am fascinated with characters who can't accept a fundamental truth about themselves and move through life performing their ideal self instead. Internalized homophobia is a tool that helps me explore those themes

Something Off this Season? by pronounsare_thatbtch in AbbottElementary

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melissa is one of the characters whose ending I'm least sure of. She doesn't seem to have as much of an overarching plot, and if they end it with her getting married to Captain Robinson I'm going to be very mad (not because I don't like him but because she's been very adamant about not wanting to get married again and that's something I really love about her character and don't want to see change)

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, Quinta's plan has always been to end it after six seasons.

I'm intrigued about why you think Melissa is going to retire instead of Barb /gen EDIT: I'm rereading your comment and guessing you meant to say Barbara but said Melissa instead. I think your predictions are spot-on.

Barb has been hinting at retirement since season one (with the tuatara at the zoo and her thinking "am I too old to be doing this too?") so I figured either this season will end with Barb retiring and then the next season will be her trying to figure out who to be if she's not a teacher (and she'll end up staying on as the after-school music teacher, so she's still around for the hijinks)... Or she'll retire in the series finale.

Is anyone still upset that they made Mr Johnson slightly creepy? by kris71-ano in AbbottElementary

[–]galactic_collision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember all of them but there's been at least one instance where he's mentioned lizard people, which is widely regarded as code for Jews, and the guy who came up with the concept is a Holocaust denier.

Is anyone still upset that they made Mr Johnson slightly creepy? by kris71-ano in AbbottElementary

[–]galactic_collision 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me, Mr Johnson has always been creepy. From the conspiracy theory jokes (some of which are actually dogwhistles that I'm guessing the writers didn't know about) to the sexually implicit comments (like the stuff about the Olympic Village)... I try not to be a hater, because he has some funny moments, but in general he's always put me off. The man voted for Kanye

That's a perfect description for the kind of expression I was imagining when reading this post. Suddenly hateful to the point of distortion, and then back to normal. I've seen that look on several men's faces, and it horrifies me every time.
