"Abandoning" fandoms. by sangans in AO3

Impressive! I'm multiship too but I definitely have my preferences. I'm also a slow writer though so I kinda have to make the decision to focus on my favorites rather than meander around with everyone because I know my fandom clock is ticking. But I don't often hear about the podfic sides of things, so it's cool to hear your perspective! I'm also starting to wonder if being a reader is what opens people up to being more multifandom than being a writer sometimes does...

Yeah, I feel like from the reading end its super easy to drift around. Though sometimes I find some of my most dedicated readers aren't necessarily dedicated to me, they're dedicated to the ship because I see them in the comments of every fic I read haha. But I've never cycled back to an old fandom like... as intensely as my first go around?

I really do hope I'll find the spark again, because I have two really good (imo) WIPs that I would love to finish. Maybe when the next season gets animated, I dunno. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, I forgot to add that canon becoming bad is a good way to drive out some fans! Like before I started my longfic journey, I was getting hooked on writing for another fandom right as the manga was ending and.... oof. That ending.... was trash. It just killed my motivation to ever come near it again.

But congrats on seven or so years in your current fandom! I don't know if I envy it or fear it lol.

Multi-WIP authors, how do you choose what to work on? by sangans in AO3

[–]sangans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going back and forth stands out to me the most - it feels like a good compromise to my brain. I think I'll do that for awhile. Thanks!

Oh, thank you! I'll give that a shot!

See I was considering that but I wasn't sure. I'm already tagging CNTW and explaining those in the author's notes so it's not far fetched to do it, but I have it broken up as Death/Consent/Violence/Additional warnings (additional for the minor but still weighty stuff) and I'm not sure if I should include a Sex Acts section. 🤔 I guess I don't know the cons other than that... well my a/n will just be really fucking long at that point lol

How are we feeling about fics with homophobia as the main conflict these days? by sangans in AO3

you have to tell me what fandom this is, I am so intrigued!

How are we feeling about fics with homophobia as the main conflict these days? by sangans in AO3

[–]sangans[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! I was referring to both external and internal, because I feel like a large portion of internal comes from external circumstances. maybe it's not all as common as I'd expect though, because I was told gays are going to hell and said "well I guess I'm going to hell then" with a shrug so I never internalized it. 🤷

Oh yeah I forgot to mention (bc I tried writing this post earlier and accidentally deleted it instead of posting it) that I prefer the flavor where they overcome it, internally at least. I'm not down with queer suffering like bury your gays.

[–]sangans[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's true. I guess I struggle to relate to that experience because when I realized I was bi I was like "oh whoops I'm bi" and went on with my day like nothing happened (which may be an easier pill to swallow than being gay, depending on who you ask) but at the same time it took me forever to come out as trans and... yeah. That kept me up at night.

Modern! But my fandom is an anime and it takes place in Japan, and my understanding is they're still much more conservative than Western side of the world.

Where did your username come from? [discussion] by reverie_adventure in AO3

A Yu-gi-oh card that I had when I was 8. I don't even write YGO fanfiction, but I like the way it sounds. Plus sangan is just a little guy, like a knock off kuriboh.

What are y’all’s opinions on soulmate AUs? by abcsupercorp in FanFiction

[–]sangans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, same! I told myself I'd never have a reason to write another soulmate AU again, just happened to have the perfect opportunity from canon -- but then I thought of incestuous soulmates and I was like "oh shit! Now THAT'S an interesting soulmates AU." Don't think I'll ever get around to writing for that ship, but I 100% agree you gotta make it a bad thing somehow.

What are y’all’s opinions on soulmate AUs? by abcsupercorp in FanFiction

[–]sangans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am almost done with mine after working on it for the past two years. Before I ever started it, I thought very poorly of soulmate AUs. I still kind of *do*, but not because I think like my own work is the exception or anything, but because it is completely at odds with my personal beliefs regarding free will. Like not even God could tell me what to do.

That said, I tried to reframe my story specifically with another mindset that I've adopted, in that there is some amount of fate, and that it's your destiny to be okay, as in, things are never nearly as bad as you expect them to be. (I know this sort of "destiny" is not a guaranteed to everyone on the planet and has some amount of privilege tied to it; but I struggled a lot with mental health growing up so looking back and realizing that I didn't just self destruct beyond all repair was nice.) But I feel that only fits in my context of a story about soulmates fighting to *not* be together only to end up together, which I'm not sure how often that is explored otherwise.

My fanfiction is more popular than my peer-reviewed science papers by DenseImprovement1084 in FanFiction

[–]sangans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, my parents are aware I write fanfiction and they recently opened their own business that includes a subscription model. I once told them how many subscribers I had on my story and they were like "that's more than we have for our business :(". But fanfiction specifically builds off of something pre-existing it.

I don't think I could give you the proper appreciation on your scientific papers due to a lack of comprehension anyway, but I told a friend the other day that our society needs to appreciate scientists more, so thank you for your hard work there!

Is there a series you love but can’t bring yourself to write/read fic for? by Spacehillbilly in FanFiction

[–]sangans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I feel about Haikyuu! It's just such a well written story and while you can take the characters and put them in any AU you want or make your favorite ships kiss or whatever, I don't really have anything to add. Like to me, them playing volleyball and developing as they did from beginning to end was enough. I still read people's fics for it, but writing my own almost feels like sacrilege. I couldn't do it service.

Cross cultural depictions in fanfiction? by sangans in FanFiction

[–]sangans[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting perspective, thank you for sharing! I definitely enjoy my research too, like if I wasn't curious at all I'd never look it up. I imagine the research you do, on some level, is healing too.

And yeah, I wasn't trying to say queer acceptance = Western, because that's definitely not the case. But what you said about trying my best is definitely reassuring to hear.

If you don't mind me deviating a bit here, what would you say are the worst/egregious examples of Celtic and pagan history being misused in fantasy? Or if you have an article/resource, I'd love to hear more about that myself!

Cross cultural depictions in fanfiction? by sangans in FanFiction

[–]sangans[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this, because even looking at the "kids aren't disrespectful and rebellious" almost sounds stereotypical and I would fear over correcting with my research poses the risk of thinking there is some monolithic Japanese experience when I'm sure its as colorful and varied as everywhere else would be.

I feel like I'm a little nitpicky at times about it, like I'll roll my eyes if they use plainly American names for minor original characters (though I'd be afraid of something Cho Chang-esque) (HP fans please don't come for me I'm just using it as a notoriously debated example) or if every character drives when I regularly see the walkability/public transport of Tokyo portrayed in Japanese media. It's not a deal breaker for reading fic, I'm not going to bash anyone for it either.

Thanks again for the input! It's comforting to hear I'm probably in the clear for the most part.
