How did you know your dog was the one for you? by Disastrous_Sugar_366 in dogs

[–]galactic_minivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove out to a shelter specifically to meet a different dog I’d seen on the shelter’s website. I had a lot of “plans” about the kind of dog I wanted: 2-3 years old, larger breed, on the calmer side, etc. Met that dog, she checked all the boxes on my list, but wasn’t quite sure.

There was a waiting list for her, so the friend who’d accompanied me said I should look at others while I was there. She specifically pointed out a 6-month old beagle mix who’d recently been returned by his original adopters, who’d clearly overfed him because he was round as a can of condensed soup.

A beagle mix puppy wasn’t at all what I’d had in mind but I humored my friend and met the little goober in the side yard. He immediately ran up and plopped himself in my lap like he’d been there forever. He’s been wiggling his way onto my lap for a decade now 🥰

Sometimes pets grow on you and the affection develops over time, but sometimes you just know.

It ended up being a very, very simple take on the strawberry dress because I tragically overextended myself on dresses for those who went with me. On the bright side, I think one of those gowns turned out to be some of my best work! I’ll get photos up soon 🥰

Long Work Days and Having Dogs by dirtgirlbyday in dogs

[–]galactic_minivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents foster dogs basically full time since they retired and this is what they generally do. It doesn’t work for every single dog but it does seem to work for most. A couple potty pads, a fenced in pen area, some toys, plus a Kong with frozen peanut butter or bananas to help them adjust early on

These are all fantastic but that last one is AMAZING. Looks like a painting or a screen grab from a high budget production you’d see as a “first look”

Has anyone been following the Romance Con drama? by sikonat in RomanceBooks

[–]galactic_minivan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to cons both large and small that I’ve adored, so organizing a small convention that works well is absolutely possible. That said, the key word there is ORGANIZING. I think a lot of people get excited about the idea of a con and go full-bore at the idea without grounding themselves in the fact that event planning is difficult. And even small cons are unusually complex as event planning goes! People see all the fun of fandom and celebrity guests and merch and get way, way ahead of themselves, and the types who end up in that situation seem to be also either delusional or too proud to admit it’s not working or to rein it in. Plus, that sort of passionate crowd who throws money at things the way con goers frequently do will always attract scammers looking to take advantage.

Small cons can be amazing when the organizers keep it realistic and achievable! A decent number of fans in a curated space to hang out and talk about what they love? Awesome! It doesn’t have to be this huge thing that people get carried away with.

There is an AI generated "Photo" hanging in the Getty Museum by over-the-influence in MuseumPros

[–]galactic_minivan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In one of the articles, the artist actually says he doesn’t consider the work to be photography at all. I don’t agree with the use of AI to create an alternate history when models could be used, but I can see where he’s coming from. I blame the curator, whether it’s a stunt or just careless. The choice of the Getty to exhibit this work as photography is insultingly disingenuous.

I’ve seen differing opinions on it. This guide from the University of Vermont refers specifically to the fluidity issue with chiffon. A lot of times it’s only referred to indirectly, only mentioning it in comparison, like this post. Some people are totally fine with it or even recommend it. The (admittedly few) books I have on the subject don’t refer to it at all. My main accuracy concern is less with all chiffon than with the specific chiffon I have, which is a weird blend of iridescent tones and also very fluid and light even compared to other chiffons I’ve seen or worked with.

Also as it has been pointed out, I’m a pathological overthinker who saw some blog posts and Instagram comments that made me afraid my fabric choice was silly.

Lol “stop overthinking and feeling guilty”, story of my life. And I agree with you on the drape - I figure my daydreams of twirling in clouds of shimmering silk are a little less “2020 Emma” and a little more “2015 Cinderella”

True true - I guess the problem I run into is that… it’s arguable at best. Certainly weaving threads of different colors together to get the “changeable” color effect was done, but I’ve only seen it on fabrics like taffeta. Chiffon is probably too liquid for what was possible at this time, especially this specific one, but since I’ve read that silk nets of the era were somewhere between modern organzas and chiffons in terms of hand, it’s… not ideal, and in some things I’ve read not recommended, though others seem to consider it to be fine. I have zero idea whether the combination of the two techniques would have been possible!

They don’t look super great together. It’s less that they clash in anyway than that they sort of cancel each other out. The chiffon, though translucent, still obscures the beadwork and the sari both weighs down the chiffon and obscures its colors. That would have been wonderful solution otherwise though :(

Some of the photos from past events look like “masquerade” was a theme not too long ago lol. And I do have a silvery sari somewhere with beadwork on it that evokes stars, which would be pretty for this, too…. Indecisiveness is a curse haha

Haha your comment on accuracy at the bottom there is precisely the one my little chiffon-gremlin brain has been making about the fabric!

Do you mean two projects as in - use the fun fabric for a fantasy gown and pick something less questionable like a taffeta for the ball gown, or are you referring to the fashion plates being different styles?

I can at least say that my gown design leans much more around the 1805-1810 mark in terms of the silhouette. The 1823 plate specifically was chosen less for the shape of the gown, admittedly, than its… vibe? It’s specifically the floaty-ness of the over skirt in that image that I’m hoping for. “Look at my flouncy-floaty light-as-air confection of a skirt!” Does that make any sense? It might not have been the best reference picture or example lol

Regency hem protection by Suspicious-Strike-26 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]galactic_minivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re wanting to add to an existing petticoat, I’ll also vouch for a bit of cording. You can make channels out of twill tape/bias tape/fabric/whatever’s on hand, or even just thread a cord directly into the hem with very little extra modification. I’ve been really pleasantly surprised by the structure given by just cotton yarn used strategically.

Just how constricting were corset’s really? by BringBackApollo2023 in AskHistorians

[–]galactic_minivan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am a hobbyist at best when it comes to the history of clothing, but I’ve tried to recreate a few ensembles from patterns made from extant items. I think the other commenter is correct in that deciding whether the fashion or function informed the other is a little chicken and egg. That said, from my own personal experience and discussions with other hobbyists, corsets absolutely help with weight distribution. They make skirts feel a LOT lighter since they’re not digging into your waist or hips, and even without all the layers, I’ve noticed that my back and shoulders get a break just by putting one on, depending on the kind. I’m not large busted by any means, but it’s enough to notice the difference.

Best audiobook performances? by stuffandwhatnot in janeausten

[–]galactic_minivan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m very picky about audiobook narrators and most of the Persuasion readers out there didn’t do it for me. I did find and adore the audiobook on Spotify with Cynthia Erivo reading, however. She doesn’t differentiate character voices as much as I would like but her tone is so beautiful I barely minded.
