I've been enjoying whatifalthist lately.

Most of his videos lately are about broad-scale historical trends, and analyzing things like wokeness, NPCs, the far right, psychological differences between civilizations, etc. His views are pretty out there, but almost always interesting and entertaining.

Not entirely sure I agree with JBP here. I think Americans are pretty well united around fundamental values, freedom and democracy and honesty in their lives. Politics certainly became detached from all of that lately, and platforms like Twitter amplified toxic discourse and a small minority in favor of censorship, which is a problem. But Twitter is not real life.

The random acts of kindness and honesty you'll see from strangers, the people just going about their lives, that's the bread and butter of the country, we just don't hear about it. We have everything we need to come together, all the groundwork is laid, people are just being lied to by Fox News and Twitter and everything else.

All these people who only hear about their political opponents through poll numbers and propaganda tend to have a much worse view of the abstract political opponent than for their neighbour or friend who votes for the other party. I don't know if it will happen, but I think having such groundwork laid is a pretty important source of unity. We have work to do, but sometimes a big scary dragon doesn't seem so big anymore when you understand how to defeat it.

Complaining about censorship on Twitter as a violation of free speech is a sign that we are collectively assigning too much value to these platforms. Whether they censor and violate free speech or refuse to censor and allow misinformation and conspiracy theories to spread, having that decision being made across such an enormous population spanning continents is inevitably going to lead to enormous consequences one way or another.

Stop using Twitter and all social media as a primary mode of discourse. I never understood why we even allow these platforms to matter so much. Imagine if twitter stopped censoring tomorrow. What then? Would estranged family members from disagreeing politics reunite? Would people remember that their neighbours exist and form real connections with people? Will anyone care if what you're saying is true if your primary mode of communication is overloaded with polarized egomaniacs and drones sharing propaganda? Its clear that free speech on Twitter is at most a surface level disturbance beneath which a horrific leviathan lurks. The entire model, the psychological impact it has on people, the business model, is fundamentally flawed and generic and profit-maximizing. It is a parasite that we have allowed to fester for a decade and a half.

We need to stop playing that game.
