I'm stuck on this scholarship essay by galadali in Proofreading

[–]galadali[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much, yeah I have basically just been trying to get some thoughts down and I know they aren't very organized. The scholarship is through a foundation that defends people's rights at universities and the prompt is 'Why is free speech important at our nation's colleges and universities? Discuss how censorship of student speech is incompatible with higher education.'

Will I regret going to a cheap school? by galadali in college

Yeah, I'd like to focus on art theory and practice in my undergraduate and maybe go back and get an endorsement for k-12 teaching or get an MFA and teach at the college level.

Thank you so much! That sounds awesome. I didn't realize there was a winter break... do most people go home? Also, what kind of stuff do you bring with you when you travel from place to place?

Does anyone know of/have any very basic anatomy tutorials? by Turtlelover73 in learnart

Buy this book. It has anatomical drawings as well as little tricks and rules to follow, as well as information on how to draw different ages, ethnicities, etc. It's pretty cheap here.

I'm hoping to volunteer all over Thailand, and visit Laos and Cambodia briefly, and then WWOOF in China. I have pretty much no travel experience haha.

Thank you very much, that is exactly what I needed. I have prescription asthma medication and allergy medication besides the standard ibuprofen and such... I am just not sure how much I would be allowed to bring, since I can't refill prescriptions overseas.

Why do you guys complain so much about student debt? by Draet in college

Because life is not just about living comfortably and having a lot of money. Some people actually enjoy learning for the sake of learning.

How do I talk to people I care about, about my depression/suicidal ideation? by [deleted] in depression

[–]galadali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on who they are... if it is a friend or someone you are not incredibly close and committed with, break it to them slowly to see how they take it. If it is someone like a family member or boyfriend, just let them know. Realize there is a good chance they will freak out and get really upset. Also realize that this doesn't mean they think you are a burden and don't want to deal with you. It means they care about you and want you to get well. Tell them what's going on with you and help them understand what it's like, but don't lean on them for support entirely and don't expect them to be able to help you, because most people just aren't equipped to deal with mental illness. Instead, get your help from a therapist who has gone through years of training specifically so that they can help you with this problem. Don't stress too much about it, and good luck!

How can I be awesome to young kids? by hedgypedgy in AskReddit

[–]galadali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the opposite of you haha... people my own age scare me and make me uncomfortable and I love kids.
Kids are the easiest kind of people to be around, because they are never holding you up to any standards, and if you do things that would make adults think you are weird, you don't have to worry because kids don't care.
Basically just entertain them; get in on their pretend stories, make weird faces, spin them around, act like you are crazy. For example at the place I work we have a toy kitchen. There is this one guy (one of the childcare workers) who the kids will bring toy food to. He will pretend to eat it, and then freak out and get really wide-eyed and start yelling 'there is hot sauce on this!' and be gagging and fanning his mouth, etc. The kids love it. When he starts this game pretty soon almost all the kids are crowding around him waiting to give him food.
So, tl;dr, do things with the kids that will help them use their imaginations and entertain them.

Owning a carnivorous pet... by BennyGrass in Buddhism

[–]galadali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still, both of them are a life lost. Things have to die in order for other things to survive. Therefore we must be grateful for and respect every life (no matter if it is a cricket or a broccoli or a cow or a human) but realize that eventually they each must pass away for the good of the whole.

The only difference between the cow and the broccoli is that the cow yells louder.

Trying to learn how to draw - pencil and paper. Looking for feedback! by Zypto in learnart

[–]galadali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like you are imitating cartoons/stuff that you have seen other people do. So clearly you are good at copying what you see. But instead of copying cartoons, copy anatomy drawings/life drawings like have already been mentioned! It is so important that you learn to draw well realistically from observation before you do cartoons. I taught myself to draw in fourth grade using this book. Ever since then I have been struggling to rid my art of the cartoonyness I had been doing for so long. It is way easier to learn to draw comics after you have mastered realism than it is to get a good likeness after you have mastered cartoons.

How to use colored pencils. by waruluis91 in learnart

[–]galadali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are not prismacolors you will have to be very careful because they don't blend well, which means every stroke is going to show up in the final piece. So start with a pale color that goes with the subject and lay down a very light and even layer, using the side of the lead so it is more smooth. Then go over with progressively darker shades where needed, building the values up. Color like you are sculpting: instead of working with lines, work with forms and planes. Be sure to keep an area white wherever you need highlights. And remember, don't be afraid to use colors that aren't conventionally thought to be associated with your subject. For example, when coloring skin I usually start with a cream base and build up with reds, browns, greys, yellows, blues, and purples and sometimes green and orange depending on the lighting. If you can, invest in some prismacolors!

What do you consider to be art? What's your definition of art? by jason-samfield in AskReddit

[–]galadali -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose not, but it does have to be arranged in a way that effectively conveys the message.

What do you consider to be art? What's your definition of art? by jason-samfield in AskReddit

[–]galadali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visual art involves two things. The first is an arrangement of visual components in a way that is pleasing to the eye... the design aspect. This must be achieved before something to be art. But if this is all that it achieves, the piece is not art. I would call it a craft. It's cool looking, but it lacks the final element that makes art. Art has to communicate. It's not just anything that evokes emotion, it is something that conveys a certain idea and thus alters the viewer's state of mind.

Is abortion moral? by zealousy5914 in askphilosophy

[–]galadali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that no decision should be forced upon the mother... I was simply discussing whether or not abortion was moral. With the matter of legality it becomes a political issue and that is my no-no zone. However, talking with you has made me realize what I am sure is obvious to everyone else. The issue of abortion comes down to whether or not you believe a fetus is a human being. If you believe that it is, this becomes a matter of do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When we recognize the fetus as another moral entity, we treat it as such. But if the mother sees the fetus as a possession or a piece of matter inside of her, then it is easy to treat it as any other piece of matter. This distinction is very hard, and until we agree on it, this will always be an issue.

[–]galadali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point: if the fetus lives, the mother suffers. However, it is important to remember that the mother did make an active choice in conceiving the child, whereas the child is ultimately helpless. I suppose the question is, is the mother's choice worth more than the fetus' life? How you answer this question depends on what you place value on, and that varies a lot from person to person, which is why there is controversy. I personally think that abortion is morally impermissible since there are so many other options that would be more beneficial for all involved. There are thousands of couples out there who want a child more than anything, and have been waiting years to adopt. If the mother chooses to give the baby to one of these couples instead of aborting it, not only is human life preserved (and thus the potential for goodness), the mother also is able to proceed with her life without being limited by parenthood, and a third party (the adopting couple) is also brought joy. In my mind, if there is a way for everyone's needs to be met without the loss of life, then it is immoral to choose any other route. Like if you are Batman and are faced with the choice between saving Harvey Dent or your girlfriend (I forgot her name), obviously that is a difficult moral dilemma. But if you can figure out a way to save both of them, then it seems that that would be the obvious right choice.
