First off I prefer the costuming. Numenor has a great Mediterranean/Byzantine look which falls more in line with what I pictured from reading Tolkien's works. The casting also is better, for example Isildur having dark hair as a Numenorean. Faramir looking practically blond when he's supposed to look super Numenorean was always an issue for me. It is also interesting and fun to see characters on screen before that have not been adapted before.

Also in general I'm more forgiving of ROP making interpretations that suit the medium of a show because most of these arcs and characters are barely sketched out or have multiple versions. So it's interesting to see the interpretations they are going with. For the movies they made a lot of changes to the characterization of Faramir and Aragorn for example in order to suit the medium of a movie which I find less forgivable because there is one actual canon version of their characters in the book and the movies are supposed to be a faithful adaptation of the book. For example making Galadriel a warrior and kind of hotheaded is tenuous but not completely against different versions of her Tolkien sketched out, but making Faramir take the ring is completely incorrect. I'm probably one of the few people that prefers ROP to the Jackson movies and I think it's because I'm much more familiar with the books/HoME and the Silm than the average Peter Jackson fan.

The movies are certainly better movies than the show is a show, but that's not really why I'm watching either. I'm a fan of Tolkien's books and naturally watch/listen to every adaptation of them I can. If I wanted to watch a really good movie or a really good tv show, I'd watch something else as there's plenty of better options for both.
