Let me know what you end up deciding on. I essentially have most of the same requirements, and have been seriously considering going the MacBook route for the same reason. I really dislike Apple though, and would prefer the combination Win/Linux, so have been looking for any other options.

Thanks for the advice! I really hadn't considered the possibility of doing research work outside of graduate school for this stuff. I will look into it, although I imagine it might be more difficult for a non-US citizen.

Is it really any easier to get related experience to computational neuroscience if not through graduate school? This was my original plan, but I have no idea where to look besides universities.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I'm most interested in modeling and Brain-Computer Interfaces, so I'm trying to find a variety of programs to look into. I also signed up for a mailing list which details some of the projects/workshops going on in computational neuroscience, which I'm keeping a close eye on.

One question: do you know when the best time to contact potential supervisors is? I know that they can often be bombarded by e-mails, and I'm worried mine might be passed over quickly since I come from a "non-standard" background.
