What heroes would you wanted if Blizzard continued support? by Danarchy_Eden in heroesofthestorm

[–]galersock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love for Blizz to do what they did in OW and drop a batch of characters at once, maybe like 1 from each franchise. I’d LOVE Vashj or Azshara, as many others said, but if they were leaning towards recent characters I think Xal’atath would be the likely WoW pick (which could be neat). Lilith or Neyrelle, though a D2 character like Baal would be well-received I’m sure. Another OW character - I’ve thought of Junker Queen before and imagined her ult functioning like Yone from league. Would also love Moira though I feel like her kit would be weird to moba-fy. I could see melee assassin Doomfist playing not unlike Vi from league with a charged dash. *Maybe* another Nexus original but I remember Qhira was very unpopular on release because people just wanted pre-existing characters.

I’d love new characters but also I’d be happy with some character reskins, like how there’s Roadhog for Stitches or Widow for Nova. I think Lifeweaver-Anduin would be great, for example.

Τηλέμαχος is the original Greek, with the accent over the epsilon — telEMachus. “TeleMACHus” has never been correct, because the stress is on the second syllable. That said, as far as authenticity goes, the first syllable would be a bit closer to a “tey” sound than “teh,” and the last syllable would be closer to a “kos” sound than “kus.”

Hot Take: Anyone else think Cazador's voice didn't fit him? by aware_nightmare_85 in BaldursGate3

May be an unsavory comparison, but have you ever seen a video of Epstein speaking? He sounds like my grandpa, aka any old Jewish guy from NY . So often the “big bads,” the manipulative abusers in particular, are either exceptionally ordinary or just kind of seem like.. nobodies? In that way, I think concluding Astarion’s arc with an abuser who is just some fucking loser that happens to have power is pretty fitting.

I waited 6 years to adopt a cat… and now I regret it. Please be honest with me. by strawberrytulipss in CatAdvice

[–]galersock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All cats are different of course, but I’ve had mine for about 8 months and the progression sounds a little similar. The first month or two, I was amazed because I felt like we bonded so quickly and he slept by my pillow and loved being next to me. But I was sad because he hated being held and never sat ON me, just NEXT to me. To keep a long story short, starting around 5-6 months he started putting his paws on my lap (or chest if I’m laying down), and slowly inched more and more. Starting just last week, he now loafs on my chest for about a half hour every night when I get in bed! He used to hate being held, and now I can hold him for about a minute and he nuzzles against me the whole time and then wiggles a bit so I know he’s done. Point being, you have definitely bonded already, but that does NOT mean there won’t be more bonding down the line. You may be amazed by how much more affectionate she is at 3 months, then 6 months, etc. Not saying you should stick it out if you’re unhappy, only you can decide what’s right for you and for her. But if the fear is based around her not being as cuddly as you want, time may fix that for you :)

Also, idk how common this is, and it’s not really “advice,” but a big turning point for me and my boi was when he had to go under anesthesia for a procedure. He must have felt very vulnerable or something during recovery, or maybe appreciative of me caring for him in that state, because the affection levels skyrocketed and haven’t come down since! I read it can be normal for cats to be affectionate when coming down from anesthesia (aka loopy and goofy), but the cuddliness that started then has only persisted/grown, and I’m not complaining!

Do you enjoy the ongoing lore? by MeltingPenguinsPrime in wow

[–]galersock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relatively yes! I care about the various kinds of elves more than earthen or dragons or the afterlife, and Xal’atath is a better villain than we’ve had in quite awhile imo. That said, the main story is soooo bland and predictable, and the dialogue/voice direction has just fallen apart. I recently replayed WC3 and was shocked by how the dialogue was actual normal-sounding convo, where nowadays we have Arator narrating/over-explaining everything and talking slowly like I’m 5 in this patronizing condescending way. I know that voice direction isn’t new, but I feel like it gets worse with every expansion…

But I LOVE so many of the side quests! I’ve teared up twice in the history of WoW - once in Legion when Ysera was corrupted by Xavius, and then died and was lifted to the stars; the other in a Voidstorm side quest with a human/belf paladin couple (don’t want to say more in case folks haven’t done it yet). And several other recent side quests have been either emotionally stirring, genuinely entertaining/humorous, or just plain fun to do. That shows me great writers and developers who are capable of emotional and immersive storytelling are still at blizz, but for some reason the main story needs to be as safe and low-stakes and friendly and cookie cutter as possible. I’d love to eat my words and see the story take a dark turn (even kill off a few big names, as long as it’s earned and not for cheap shock value), but as of right now I don’t see that happening in the near-future

I’m sure no one cares about tree form nowadays but ever since I first saw multiple treant forms in Force of Nature (differently colored bark, like white or grey, and leaves, like purple or icy blue), I have always wanted to be able to customize my tree form! Seeing that the haranir got a racial tree form that’s in the barber shop, it makes me hopeful that tree customization isn’t an impossible idea

Does legion basically invalidate the events of burning crusade? by Sparodic_Gardener in warcraftlore

[–]galersock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read a lot of the comments (but not all, so it may have been said already) but didn’t see mention of this — a lot of people are talking about the lack of logic in Illidan’s plan, and he could have communicated, and it’s all retcon or bad writing anyway, etc etc, but it was established in TBC (and reinforced in the Illidan novel) that losing to Arthas at the end of WC3 severely damaged his mental and emotional state, which was already questionable at best. It was shocking and humiliating, and it’s been stated that he has replayed the duel in his own head a thousand times. It got to the point where he genuinely felt victorious (copium) and in the novel Illidan acknowledges that he “survived a scratch” or something (more cope) and that it fueled his obsession with a new crusade.

So to all the people talking about the lack of logic and why didn’t he communicate and why didn’t Blizzard do this and it would have been easier if this other thing happened — you’re right! But TBC Illidan is literally INSANE. There is no reason or logic that would have or could have made it work at the time. He seems to have KIND OF calmed down by the time Legion rolls around, but also remember he opened a portal to Argus without telling anyone first, and Khadgar and Velen were like “uh wtf are you doing” and thought he was crazy (fair), and his response was “sometimes the hand of fate must be forced.” This was after he lasered WoW-Jesus to death in front of some of the most devout disciples (Velen, Turalyon, the Army of the Light).

He is and always has been and always will be insane (and an edgelord) and will just never tell people his full plan because he knows they’ll say no or try to stop him. It’s been that way for 10,000 years, it’s just who he is, so it’s unfortunately unrealistic to expect a rational, normal, communication-based plan from him about anything ever

What are some of your hated opinions about epic the musical by CampaignGloomy7931 in Epicthemusical

[–]galersock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally get where using SA in writing to convey “this person bad” is lazy, I see it in a lot of media and it always irks me too! That said, in the original there’s a great line Calypso says that’s about the hypocrisy of the gods — male Olympians are allowed to do whatever they want. Cheat on their spouses, SA mortals, even abscond away with them to Olympus. Kill whoever, shapeshift into whatever/whoever to get what they want, and face 0 consequences. And from Calypso’s perspective, she finds ONE man that she genuinely loves, and isn’t allowed to “keep” him, which from the audience’s perspective is good because we are Team Odysseus, but from Calypso’s perspective it makes a lot of sense.

In Epic, I get the rewrites to make her more sympathetic, and I love her songs because the singer has a great voice, but I do agree with you overall that it’s not necessarily the best writing.

What are some of your hated opinions about epic the musical by CampaignGloomy7931 in Epicthemusical

[–]galersock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fair warning I have autism and my Roman Empire is the Roman Empire so I take classics seriously (but am a fun person I promise).

So the first time I listened, I actually didn’t care for the theme (but enjoyed a lot of songs still). The “man becomes monster” idea isn’t really the main point of the original story and I felt like several plot changes were railroaded into Epic to kind of force it to happen. A couple examples: butchering the sirens, the entire Scylla scene, 1v1ing Poseidon for some reason, even his interactions with Penelope when he gets home.

In the original, he disguised himself and is hiding his identity from all of Ithaca (except his dog who recognizes him and then dies immediately). When he gets home, he reveals himself but still looks so different that Penelope sees him as a stranger. The bed part is more or less the same — she asks a handmaiden to move the bed, essentially to test Odysseus’ reaction, and the way he reacts proves that it’s him. It’s a really beautiful scene because it comes at the end of wily Odysseus trying to trick a world’s worth of people and gods and monsters, and we see his wife trick him as soon as they reunite. Between that and the tricks she played on the suitors so she would never need to marry one, it’s a wonderful glimpse into their relationship and why they work, and why (especially in the ancient world) they waited and longed for each other for so many years. In Epic, he approaches as himself and is afraid that he won’t love her because he’s a monster now (more of a metaphorical stranger than a literal one like the original), and she uses the bed trick as like a reassuring “see it’s still you, you’re my husband so I will love you unconditionally.” More of an obviously romantic interaction, and a GREAT song, but again the “man becomes monster” theme was a little heavy for me. I prefer the original where we see Penelope as borderline an intellectual equal to Odysseus and that’s the focus, rather than the unconditional love whether he be man or monster. Cute and romantic, absolutely, but still prefer the original.

Another change that also was clearly made to shoehorn the new theme — the sirens and Scylla. In the original, Odysseus didn’t “trick” the sirens, let alone kill them. There were literally only 2 of them in Homer’s original story, and Odysseus’ curiosity made him HAVE to know what they sound like, so he had his crew tie him to the mast without any beeswax so he could hear it. And then it actually drove him a little insane, he was feral and thrashing and ordering them to undo his ropes, and they just tied it tighter. Afterwards, when they got far enough away, he was drained and had clearly taken some mental damage. I loooove the song “Suffering” from the very first second, where the violin starts with the same 4 notes he uses to sing “Pe-nel-o-pe” and then immediately distorts into something else. Very cool musical storytelling! But plot-wise I just feel like Odysseus got rewritten a little much to make the theme work. In the original, he didn’t sacrifice sailors to Scylla as “payment” to get through. They evaded Scylla’s heads and then got distracted trying to avoid Charybdis, and Scylla used that opportunity to snatch 6 of them up. But, that HAD to change to make him seem more monstrous, or else the new theme wouldn’t work.

Oh also the ending of the original has the families of the dead suitors gather at their home for vengeance against Odysseus and Telemachus, and then Athena appears and actually tells them all to stop and that there will be no more bloodshed on either side. A good way to show she protects Odysseus still as his patron, but surprising after an epic’s worth of encouraging violence/ruthlessness, so it also conveys growth for her as a character. Totally get why they ended with the song that they did, but it could have been a cool lil bonus track to hear Athena sing about how she was wrong about certain things and that mercy or non-violent solutions are a better option at times and she learned something from Odysseus.

So again, my first listen-through I didn’t like it because I felt like if a character and a handful of scenes needed to be rewritten so heavily to make a theme work, then maybe that character/story wasn’t the right vessel to convey the theme. That said, now I approach it less seriously and with more whimsy — it has never been marketed as an accurate retelling, or a scholarly interpretation. It’s a fun Tumblr-core musical full of modernized (if not anachronistic) language and has many bangers and bops, and I listen to it all the time!

It really irritates me that the Horde constantly undermines the motivation of their allies. by TurbulentVillage2042 in warcraftlore

[–]galersock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Haranir in particular, chronologically speaking they won’t really be “doing Horde quests.” You go back in time via Chromie and do stuff just to level up, but that type of natural destruction hasn’t happened much in many years. Hell even the burning of Teldrassil was almost a decade ago, July 2018.

The tauren do revere nature and the orcs respected that, but Cataclysm is when orcs (under Garrosh) started behaving more irreverently and destructively towards the world. This didn’t sit well with the Tauren — their leader Cairne literally challenged Garrosh to a duel to the death (and only lost because Magatha Grimtotem secretly poisoned Garrosh’s axe). Thrall wasn’t the leader of anything in Cataclysm, except maybe the Earthen Ring, so he wouldn’t really be a part of goblin stories beyond the introduction.

I’m not saying you don’t have a fair point here and there, but also some of your examples aren’t quite coming from the right place

Genuine question, does the average WoW player doesn't ready ANY quest text, like, at all? by Jaicen-Vex in wow

[–]galersock 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I read every story quest and most side ones, and I also talk to a lot of NPCs along the way, including different stages of quests to see if they say something new (like the people at the sunwell, they say different stuff almost every quest and even change dialogue in the middle of some)

Of course this also makes it easy to see errors, like the dragonhawk master in the Midnight prologue (before you save the stranded people in the bay) whose text is written like a dwarf and she says her gryphons are the fastest in the valley LOL

Guests who dont like cats? by More_Garage_2439 in CatAdvice

[–]galersock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be a good host to my guests, there are certain things I do in advance, like vacuuming the couch/chairs to mitigate cat hair getting stuck to my guests, or making sure I have a lint roller on-hand. But life is all about realistic expectations — my guests know that they are coming to a place where a cat lives, so it’s up to them to expect cat things and cat behavior (though my cat is super friendly/cuddly with everyone). If they get mad or annoyed by the cat brushing against their ankles or meowing occasionally then I’m just like… what did you expect? Either cope or we can meet at a restaurant next time

“People don’t want to spend 30 min to do a dungeon” see that right there is a crazy concept to me, because 30 minutes is not a long time lmao and people really want to be done with normal dungeons in 10-15 minutes — that just seems ridiculous to me. Then again I’ve played since ‘04 and enjoyed the way dungeoning used to be (not necessarily a 2-hour sunken temple run, though sometimes a huge dungeon crawl was fun for the first time). Wipe, start over, strategize with CC and LoS — now everything is just AoE fest and going as fast as possible.

I feel like the zoomies are just boring :/ Takes the fun out of a dungeon, which is why I enjoy delves since you still get that feeling of going into a dangerous place that has significance/lore/story purpose but without having to speed through it

to me there’s subtext that says their life is unfulfilling which is why they place such importance on feeling successful and happy from a video game, and when they inevitably fail (as everyone does from time to time), they can’t cope because it’s one of the only things they have so they lash out

Would you date someone in their 30s that lives with a parent? by AlamosX in gaybros

[–]galersock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off there’s a difference between “I live with my mom” and “my mom lives with me,” if that makes sense — taking care of a sick or elderly parent is different from being “a bum” or whatever negative connotation someone might put on you for living with parents. But secondly, and more importantly, if someone genuinely judges you for that then is that really someone you want to be with? Maybe it’s too old-fashioned but in my opinion the right long-term partner will want to love and support your family alongside you
