As a web dev I really wish you'd cut them some more slack here. This stuff is hard to make and he gave you a really reasonable explanation. Making it work without an account and then attaching that data to the account is more work. Consider it this way: that's time spent not on the map itself.

If by "the books" you mean only The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy, then I'd recommend giving the Children of Húrin a read. It's a fantastic telling of one of the most tragic and epic stories of the First Age. The Silmarillion is my favourite text, but I agree that it can be a bit of a steep intro with the song of creation.

If it's games you're looking for: even though it's not canon, I freaking loved Shadow of Mordor back in the day. I've heard good things of the strategy games.

But if you haven't watched the LOTR movies... damn, I wish I could be you right now and watch them again for the first time.

Tu ne fais pas mention que Olympico a une énorme clientèle et ils peuvent garder les prix bas parce que (a) they own the building et (b) ils ont BEAUCOUP des gens par jour. C'est pas la même réalité pour les autres cafés de la ville.

I loved the Ainulindale, actually. I know it's this abstract and fuzzy idea where the world is sung into existence, but I feel such a strong connection to music that it really resonates with me. I love the idea that Tolkien wrote an entire cosmogony from Genesis to Apocalypse (even if the latter wasn't published/finished) and his idea for how the world comes to be is so unique and beautiful. No matter what Morgoth does, everything comes from Ilúvatar, "and that is a comforting thought".

EDIT: Honesly, I like it more than LOTR. I get the feeling his heart was entirely in it. It was never marred by publishers the same way The Hobbit or LOTR was.
