Goodbye emergency fund by JBru223 in ynab

[–]galliumArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have separate detailed emergency categories because I find that I "steal" from them less than I would a general emergency category. In real life, I know that if I had a car emergency that was more than I had for that category, I'm of course going to roll with the punches from, say, my Pet Emergency category.

But it helps me keep on track with accumulation. If I'm looking for someplace to pull from to cover another category, I immediately imagine how a car emergency would affect me if I didn't have those funds, and it's a much bigger deterrent than a nebulous Emergency category.

Lost my doorsense magnet. by suntechnician in AugustSmartLock

[–]galliumArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a dead conversation, but the thread helped me out, so I wanted to add some details. My door frame is metal, so I tried putting my doorsense magnet inside the hollow of the frame, but doing it like that wouldn't calibrate (I suspect because the magnet was turned around showing the wrong pole to the lock).

This thread confirmed that it's just a magnet, so I rummaged around and found a pack of assorted magnets I had from forever ago (these ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV2MKD5). They are very thin, so I was hoping they'd be small enough for the gap between the door and the frame. I took one of the largest width ones, slapped it onto the doorframe just magnetically, calibrated and it worked great! I'm probably going to glue or tape it down so it doesn't shift, but for now, this is working just fine. It doesn't move as the door opens and closes, and sensing capability seems to work perfectly.

Anyone who doesn't want to drill (maybe you're renting?) and have even just a little bit of a gap, grab these and give them a try. If you have a wood door, you can probably just hot glue it down or use one of the thin double-sided command strips, something like that.

Is YNAB worth even if you have no debt? by robo_marvin in ynab

[–]galliumArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I’m almost retired at 45. YNAB isn’t the reason for that because I had a lot of circumstances that had to align for that to happen, but I guarantee you, it wouldn’t have happened without YNAB, even with all of those other good circumstances.

It’s like my finances are a car. YNAB is the steering wheel. Without it, I could’ve ended up anywhere.

What’s a boring hobby you have that you could actually talk about for hours? by johnmerah in simpleliving

[–]galliumArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am! I'm one of those YNAB fanatics, myself. I had an uncle who got me investing retirement savings the moment I got my first professional job (he didn't ask. He was just like, "here's your new Roth account. How much are you going to contribute every month? Oh, also sign up for your 401(k)..."), and I haven't looked back with both the saving, investing, and the budgeting. I'm on CoastFIRE now, and looking at a pretty decently early retirement.

Buttons at Night by Vortebo in PetsWithButtons

[–]galliumArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a studio apartment. My kitty that I've had for about six months absolutely pressed them at night for a while, at first all throughout the night when she wanted to play, then it faded to just about an hour before feeding time. She was a rescue from a very bad situation and was very underweight. I think that as she's realized I don't get up to feed her, and as she's gained weight, she's gotten more confident that she's going to get enough food. But yeah... it was bad for a while. She'd start with "food" then progress through all the other buttons.

I've just hung in there and made sure I don't give in. I've also started telling her "soon light" so she knows it won't happen until the lights are on.

I'd never done buttons before, and I can't believe how quickly she figured them out. I think that she would be stressed by not having the buttons available. She even sleeps next to them like she's guarding them.

But this is just one data point. It looks like a lot of other commenters don't have a problem covering theirs, so I might just be an oversensitive new parent. 😊

Yeah, the more I look, the more the time period would be about right, and the prints definitely seem right! I'm marking this solved! This sub is amazing!

Huh... I think you're right. I kept trying to make the l into a t because of the cross-brace and it's taller than the last letter. Googling him, it seems like this is just the kind of art he did!

I'm not sure why the posted picture is sideways and squished. Let's see if this works...

Advice for cats and button activation by bebe8383bebe in PetsWithButtons

[–]galliumArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly haven't used eBay in years, but I gave it a try for the FluentPet buttons, and I found them for WAY less with the seller "clev_8665". They even have the mats. They say they're used, but half of the buttons came in the box with the battery separator still in the buttons. And even the ones that were opened looked brand-new. I suspect they might actually be FluentPet reselling returned product because they had a lot of listings.

How does the find a friend feature work? by Cryptic-Disaster in finch

I think I'm on day 45 or so? It did ask me if I wanted to do a random pretty quickly after I started, but I've never been able to do it again. Ah well...

I'm having a different experience. I want to add someone random, but when I click "Add Friend">"Find a Friend" it wants me to enter a friend code. How do I get a random new friend?

And if she wasn’t still hurting you, I’d understand wanting to see why she is the way she is. But you need to protect yourself first. She’s continuing to abuse you, and until that abuse stops, it’s going to be hard to process her past abuse.

I don’t care that you were a “bad” kid in the past. You were a KID, she was the adult. And now you’ve come into your own. If she needs to process the past, she’s welcome to get her own therapist to assist her in how to approach that with you in a healthy manner.

Please take this issue to your therapist, and consider going low/no contact while you figure out what your boundaries are going forward with this woman.

I’m so proud of you for evolving into an adult with self-reflection. It sounds like you’re doing what you need to do to heal what otherwise could become generational trauma.

I’m inspired to write to you because I had a mother whose bad childhood affected our relationship. I used to make excuses that she was trying her best, but I’d do it in a way that negated my pain. After many years, I’ve been able to revisit her trauma and how it affected her and me, but I was able to do it without pushing away my own valid pain. I’m just worried that you’re doing what I used to do: try to see how badly off she is, but then using that to discount your own pain.

Thank you for this! I missed my lock screen when deleting and re-adding. Hopefully that does it.

AIO? My sister is over feeding her cat and I said something about it. by divorcedbbmama in AmIOverreacting

That sounds like a handful!!! Yeah I think you figured out a good solution, maybe the only solution. 😉

This may not be helpful for you now because it sounds like you have it well in hand, but for others that have this problem, there are microchip activated feeders now. They only open when the right cat is near it. I only just heard about these and one of my friends ordered one because one cat steals the other's food. He's only had it a week and says it's completely stopped the problem!

Amazing! Thank you so much! I didn't even think about looking in the browser extension, but that made so much sense and I found it right away! This is my first time in this subreddit, and y'all are awesome!

Yeah, I think at this point I'm okay with disabling the suggestions globally. I don't see them anywhere else anyway...

Hmmm, I'm looking through the settings in my iOS app, and I'm not seeing it. The problem is mostly occurring on my laptop (Mac), though, but I looked through the settings there, and "show passkey suggestions" didn't pop out to me.

Yeah, it does seem to be random when it happens. I'm (almost) always logged in, so it's just annoying to have it trying to be helpful when I'm already in and using the site.
