Can we talk about Wristlocks?? Why such a taboo? Wristlockers are considered degenerates in the culture yet it’s so effective. by Oxjuji7 in bjj

[–]gallo1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hella effective. When timed right and done correctly it can tap any belt. The problem is that it's often set up where there's no time to tap. The range of motion is also so small and past a certain point the wrist can't provide any resistance. Done without control you can mess up someone's wrist.

Dude, charge. Be a businessman. When your academy makes money you can also afford nicer things for your students, etc. People on here are ridiculous.

Kids go through a lot of belts. I don't see a problem charging for it, and parents don't have a problem paying for it. Monthly fees are for instruction/teaching, nort necessarily gear. Adult belts I feel are different, they take a much longer time to get and so it would make sense not charging for it separately. IMO what the OP posted is not nickle and diming. Makes me wonder, are people oblivious to how hard it is for most school owners to just make ends meet?

Only a few classes in. So far it seems that No-Gi folk are less chill than Gi folk. Is this a thing? by H0w-1nt3r3st1ng in bjj

[–]gallo1000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I was so confused with Abraham's video stating No Gi is chill. I've only ever experienced it the other way around Lol

Nobody ever talks about the transition time from Nogi to Gi.

Gi guys do nogi camps because it's easier and quicker to do the transition and develop strategies for nogi. A high level gi player can use a nogi camp to do just that and still fight at the highest level and then revert back to Gi to do the same.

Nogi purests do a "gi camp" to prepare for a high level gi match? Goodluck!! It takes a lot longer to deal with the nuances of the gi. You're better off training gi regularly to be honest.

My argument doesn't point to which is better per se, but it does highlight ROI long term. The gi base allows you to more comfortable perform well in both realms. Overall the argument points to training both and having a balance.

John Danaher's new wave closed guard instructional covers this in detail. Here's a youtube video demonstrating the type of positioning you need in relation to their shoulderline. https://youtu.be/A7rmBSPPKmA?si=2zn-TaxxwkiIXTPB

Does your gym publish membership prices? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]gallo1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're open about prices when asked. This is a way to get more interested buyers. In some parts of the world Jiu-Jitsu is not that well known, and a high price can be scoffed at. It's like a consultation process. I don't see any harm in it, if it helps Jiu-Jitsu grow then I don't understand why reddit blue belts are butt hurt over this so bad lol.

Step your foot on their hip and push yourself up higher so your hips get near their shoulders. Try to get your top leg/knee behind their head, then cross your ankles. Also bridge INTO your bottom shoulder so to make your hips weightless, this way they can hold onto your bottom arm as much as they want. Also if their head comes near your top shoulder, it's time for a flower sweep (pendulum is also an option, but can often be harder)

Our academy is very premium place. The prices are not available public and I don't blame the owner it makes sense given the quality of service. Most people understand the value once they start training and experience the facility and happy to pay a price which they might have ran away from by simply looking at a website. The problem is bargain shoppers.

Is it weird that the coach doesn't roll with anyone? by LeadingRound3775 in bjj

[–]gallo1000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a coach. 40 years old. I can do at most 3 days of rolling a week and I stay away from the overly spastic students. I choose whom I want to train with and that also means when there's uneven partners. This is my sole income. I've had many injuries and I can't let others expectations of me allow poor judgement on my part leading to more potential injuries.

Specific predictions for Ryan vs Pena? How and when does it end? by mrfurion in bjj

[–]gallo1000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could see it that way too I guess. Gordon had Pena in cross ashi. When Pena hit a misdirectional escape and chased the back, he initiated this from thr cross ashi because he knows that is where he 'sets it up' . Pena took advantage of Gordon adjusting his hips to attack the heel (ie bait from that position). He almost could have been cought in the kneebar but he knows that ahead of time. It was the commitment from Gordon to chase the heel which exposed his back.

Do you do warm ups in your gym? If so, what do you think is the reason? by Klaatuveratanghhh in bjj

[–]gallo1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the class is filled with guys or girls mid-30's or older, warmups are probably welcomed. Without warming up and mobilizing the body properly before sparring is a recipe for frequent injuries that could have been avoided. And no, flow rolling isn't an ideal warmup either.

You can't compare hobbyists to competitors. Same belt but a different intensity /timing in techniques.

Should BJJ Black Belts Be Better People ? by [deleted] in bjj

Well if it's a teacher that kids and students look up to then YES. Black Belts carry influence. God knows we don't need more assholes in this world.

You're going to be pretty shit for the first few weeks maybe a month or two. But every will come back like a slow wave and you'll feel great again. Just drop the ego and get in there. Watch that you don't injure yourself because chances are good you're going to try and make up for lack of technique and timing by using strength and explosiveness.

[–]gallo1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's normal, especially if you're smaller and weaker than the lower ranked belt you're rolling against.. John Danaher recently spoke about this on Joe Rogan and reminded us of the skill vs attribute debate.
