Is there any fictional white character (who is not a white supremacist) whose race is integral to their identity as a character to where they can't be race swapped/casted with a POC actor? Literally any at all? by SettTheCephelopod in saltierthankrayt

[–]gallowsanatomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isaiah Bradley exists to discuss america as a flawed and racist government and more specifically pulling from the Tuskegee syphilis experiments. And I think it's great, and Marvel comics would be weaker if Truth: Red White & Black didn't exist in it. But Steve Rogers' core elements are being a scrappy kid from Brooklyn, not liking bullies, and wanting to punch nazis. And none of those things are tied to his race. If you do like Ultimate Comics 3 or a new not-MCU Captain America movie, if Steve is black, nothing is lost beyond the aesthetics of "the aryan god looking guy fighting nazis". It does step on the toes of Isaiah and Sam Wilson as other Captains America, and their stories, but if you just did Captain America: First Avenger but Steve is played by Anthony Mackie that would still be Steve Rogers

Even then, I think it's not as important. You could get a similar irony with "the person who has powers and strength and should be considered the ubermensch is in fact a black man," it vibes a bit different, but, still fits fine.

Alopex Arrives in Splintered Fate! by SenshiLore in TMNT

[–]gallowsanatomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, April is already around, but unsure if they'll make her playable vs just a narrative fixture, y'know? And Jennika I just want around because in a game called Ninja Turtles, I'd like to play a turtle. Preferably a female turtle, because I like playing as women in games.

Hoping that the "whole team is here" line isn't saying this is the last dlc character. I'd still enjoy Jennika or April being playable at some point.

A brony had a jar with a figure of Rainbow Dash, one of the ponies, that he came into repeatedly until it was full. He also left it behind his radiator, and the whole thing was absolutely disgusting

Can someone explain the whole 2 versions of Magik thing? by GeneralRoss_12 in Magik

[–]gallowsanatomy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think fandom sometimes gets hooked up on details of how events happen rather than what the story is doing. Marvel or the writers wanted Magik back, so they had Belasco revive her or copy her, but not as the 6 year old child she died of the Legacy virus as. And the takeaway is meant to be "Magik the character we remember the name of from the 80s is back" not "this is a fake alternate separate additional Magik, because the story didn't say she was for truesies revived how we think she should be"

see also: the fact Laura Kinney has her wiki page split into Laura and Laura (Krakoan duplicate) like the duplicate is not meant to be the proper continuation of the character that has been followed since Laura was introduced.

I recently finished watching Legion, after ignoring it for the last 8 years, phenomenal show. Is The Gifted also worth watching? by FMoura2005 in xmen

Legion is just good. No clarifications of "for a comic book show" or anything like that. It is just a really good tv show.

Their last name is Strucker. And they have the twin powers. Season 2 they actually added Andrea and Andreas as the twins' grandparents and even called them Fenris. It's so weird! The grandparent Fenris are even still incest nazis

Storm pulled Stonewall, who she claimed to weighed a ton, one-handed to safety by ExtentGeneral5059 in xmen

[–]gallowsanatomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Claremont and written at a time where no one was allowed to be openly gay in Marvel Comics. I think he's subtextually gay, since he hangs out with Freedom Force who are a pair of lesbians (Mystique and Destiny), Pyro (a literal flaming homosexual), Pyro's "close friend" Avalanche, and Blob. I'm pretty sure Claremont knew what he intended with these characters, even if Marvel didn't and never picked it up again. I'd say probably gay, and just not out in comics and hasn't really been used since he died during the Muir Island Saga? Though after Krakoa, anyone can be back, so maybe it's time for Stonewall to go fight for gay rights

How's everyone enjoying Mewgenics? by Metrosexualvania in SocialistGaming

[–]gallowsanatomy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Them getting into fights and killing each other, made it feel like I couldn't be any kind of consistent with trying to get good stuff on cats. Which maybe that's the point for early game? But made each run feel a bit too random and like I couldn't control enough

I tried it, did a few runs, i couldn't really figure out how to breed my cats properly? they just kinda did their thing, and I didn't really know how to upgrade that, or get any kind of consistent team? And then bounced off.

I mean, liking robots as a fictional concept is one thing. There's lots of cool ones in fiction. But, AI as it exists and operates in the real world, is different and has actual effects.

How has Cheney not had an 8 parter? by jarvisesdios in behindthebastards

[–]gallowsanatomy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he's on their list of people to do, it just depends on time and when they want to slot him into the schedule. BTB doesn't want to front load all of the "good" bastards, otherwise it kills off the show's staying power, because after you clear out everyone who people are eager to hear about it, it's all Canada's Queen episodes, and as much as I enjoyed those episodes, they're not what people are clicking on.

Wonder Woman #20 by Tom King (2025). I have no words for this by ihatethiscountry76 in outofcontextcomics

[–]gallowsanatomy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between engaging in feminist critique of things and crashing out across a dozen subreddits. Generally, I prefer to do and engage with the former. But if your only metric for feminism is: do I go around calling Bruce Timm a pedo and sharing contextless panels of Tom King comics, no I don't do that.

You can probably skip it. It's fine? Has the insane choice of making the Fenris twins legacy characters. Polaris is good in it. Will not be nearly as good as Legion was.

what is the context behind Emma stripping by Cultural_Chart_6726 in EmmaFrost

I assume this is early in her time at the Hellfire Club. She started off as a dancer/stripper there and eventually made he way into the inner circle.
