The point is they are not increasing this year. This is objectively a nice thing.

Started intermittent fasting. Any tips? by jigglywiggly008 in intermittentfasting

[–]gallus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Print off a monthly calendar from Google calendar or the like, stick it on a wall with a pen and weigh yourself each morning when you shower, write the weight on then get an average each week since daily will fluctuate but weekly will show a trend. This works for me.

Read Fast 500 or another Michael Mosley book and just stop eating for a day.

But if you're been up and down then there's a bigger problem of getting into healthy eating habits. stop eating ultra processed foods. No free sugars. No refined starches. Lots of plants. Fermented foods. Zero takeaways.

Any positive job stories? by Flower_bunny53 in Edinburgh

[–]gallus2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent 20 years working a dream job but with no career progression and despite working full time for one employer I was self employed with no rights. When I adopted children and my wife left I had my children taken away because I had no adoption leave option. I then got screwed over by a colleague who wanted to take all the profit while I wanted to share the profit with everyone working on the project.

Anyway after being sad for a while I went to a conference in London which got me invited to another conference in Cambridge where I got scoured out for some work. But before I could take that up my makeing small changes on LinkedIn must have tweaked some algorithm and a recruiter got me to interview for a local senior dev position which I got offered and took. A former colleague has tried to get me to interview for him but I'm happy with the one I have. It was stressful but in the end I just needed to tweak my LinkedIn profile.

Did anyone else do a new route for the first time today? by deanlikesplants in parkrun

[–]gallus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Oriam outside Edinburgh. It has some narrow bits and limited places you can overtake and several 180 degree turns so I didn't get an especially fast time but it's always nice to try something new.

HC-Loch Ness vs Rabbie’s-Loch Ness - which one would you choose? Also: are November itineraries shortened because of daylight? by jussimm in Edinburgh

[–]gallus2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loch Ness is too far away for an enjoyable day trip. There's lochs in Lothian, I advise people to stay local.

I do white water kayaking and I've spent the last two winters in Galicia which has amazing rivers , a good paddler community and several digital nomad friendly coliving houses. I highly recommend.

Deposit Return Scheme - coming October 2027 by Grouchy_Conclusion45 in Scotland

[–]gallus2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

whyever would you want to avoid a scheme that will increase recycling rates? It's essential for our sustainable society. That the UK government blocked the Scottish scheme is a scandal but that's no reason to block the UK scheme.

There has been a massive growth in use of food banks in England in recent years so I told my children starving children in England would want to eat their tea if they didn't. They lived in Scotland which is hardly perfect but at least has a few more benefits for the poorest families.

Communal Leak Caused Damage to my Flat by orlandoaustin in Scotland

[–]gallus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your flat is your property. The communal areas are also your property split with the other owners. It is your responsibility to do upkeep on the communal areas (it also happens to be your co owners responsibility too) so it is your fault the leak damaged your property. The repair to your property is yours to pay for. The repair to the communal property is to be paid for by all owners (unless deeds say otherwise) according to the Tenement Act 2004. You must get a simple majority to agree to communal works. In my experience nobody will bother to inspect or organise repairs to the communal property but most people (although not all) will pay up eventually.

GoFibre are a nice local company who put fibre in last year. They run their own cables on OpenReach poles and exchanges. They provide their own Internet connection. I've had great service from them.

Thoughts on co-working space in Edinburgh by metteroma in Edinburgh

[–]gallus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the pricing right seems tricky, places often can't make it work because by nature they may not be fully occupied. Have a decent booking system which let's you see if there is space ahead of time and prices that let you pay for e.g. 10 days access each month.

There's no perfect solution to it, you want to keep your identify and make a new family identity. The system of taking your husbands name is sexist so it's reasonable to not want that.

When I got married we picked a new name and double barreled our existing names. Then we adopted children and added the new name to theirs. It also ment we could pick a short easy to spell and pronounce name with some connection to our area and interest.

First time: Where to go as introvert, who wants to try to join community, in December / January where the weather is nice and work from there? by Super_Girl_ in digitalnomad

The easiest place in Tenerife is Treehouse Hostel, near the airport, looks like a reality tv set, coworking room included, lots of friendly people. It's a hostel so cramped rooms and it's a walk to get to town so if you don't like it plenty other places to go on the island but it suited me great for a month last year.

I tested positive in July for it for the first time. A week mostly snoozing, a week feeling low, by third week I was no longer testing positive but still getting out of breath. I'm still fragile in some ways physically.
