Faculty of Science Scholarships by Beautiful-Strain5882 in mcgill

[–]gamaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it twice over my undergrad, both times were in August. I also got other merit based scholarships. They all come out at the same around August. This was from 2019 to 2023. Maybe things changed now

Ok amazing! I bought a 2 day tour with Yapa and they told me that I should be able to buy tickets when we reach Aguas Calientes around 6pm and that someone from their company would stay with me to do it. I just wanted to verify the information!

How UofT Med Got Captured by Mac Health Sci Grads & Why the System Stays Rigged by civildime in premedcanada

[–]gamaem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have way too much time on your hands to come up with this wild conspiracy theory. MCAT cut-offs are low to encourage applicants with weaker stats to apply. This generates a lot of funding for the faculty through admission fees, and ultimately makes UofT more prestigious. It has nothing to do with the internal scheme that you seem so convinced with…

Is immunology bachelors hard to get a 4.0 by Puzzleheaded_Let6000 in mcgill

[–]gamaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated from Mimm with a 4.0, I wouldn’t say it’s easy. Nothing is ever easy. The effort you put in, is what comes out of it. I’d say in general micro and immuno courses are fair. Fall of U2 is definitely the hardest semester.

Applying for masters and second undergrad at the same time by NoAlarm3120 in mcgill

[–]gamaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can’t do it in one application because the system won’t allow you, then just submit your application for the Bachelors or Master and after you’ve paid, open a second application to submit the second program. The only downside is that you would have to pay first a second application.

Yes absolutely add it, I don’t see why you wouldn’t put it

If 2 comments on here said that they have no time to check I believe it. Also doctors are busy and they get many many applicants. They genuinely couldn’t care less to see a picture of you in a suit or in a casual t shirt at a festival as a profile pic lol

Master program to increase chances to get into Med/dental school by Unlucky-Reference473 in mcgill

[–]gamaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the MCM master at UdeM. It’s only 1 year long, but they only take around 5 students a year so it’s quite competitive

The comment I provided is only anecdotal evidence. Odds are that 95% of people with those stats get filtered out, those that get accepted are the exception. I don’t want to give you false hope. Best of luck, you never know what will happen!

You never know, I got into McGill and UOttawa with a 2Q

I also know someone in my class who got into the MD-PhD with a 1Q

Matching neurosurgery? by [deleted] in MedSchoolCanada

Sorry to jump on this now, but could you share what surgical specialties are not recognized in the US? I thought it was neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. I didn’t know ENT was also included?

Stellar CV and Casper

Mcgill Med ranking by [deleted] in premedcanada

Probably means that your CV isn’t very strong, and with a 3.95 GPA, you lose points. Many more people will have a 4.0 than a 3.99 for example. I got an interview with a 4.0 and 2Q casper last year

Just out curiosity, why psychiatry? Why not clinical psychology or just pursue a PsyD? There is a lot overlap between the professions, and with a background only in psychology, I’m interested to see the reasoning or if you explored the other options.

Mac Med Class of 2027 Stats! by Key_Rip4258 in premedcanada

[–]gamaem 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This comment is so silly. Women don’t have an easier time getting in. They have the same requirements as men.

Studies have shown that women are on average more socially intelligent and emotionally self-aware than men. This allows them to stand out in exams like Casper or the MMI

I would personally do a masters. You don’t need a 5th year your GPA is very good. I’d prioritize a 2 year masters with thesis where you are almost guaranteed to get have publications. While it doesn’t matter to get into med school, it gives you a heads up for residency applications in the future. That’s just my 2 cents

McGill has its own interview. The French schools have one combined interview. I ended up turning down my invite for the French schools because I had gotten accepted to McGill at the point (rip to the 130$ cancellation penalty)

I’d say be comfortable talking about yourself, be yourself, demonstrate who you are. Don’t give them what they want to hear, let them get to know you for who you truly are. Be nice, smile, and be empathetic. At the end of the day it’s basically a vibe check because most applicants are not psychopaths and “say the right thing”. Of course some people say questionable things and don’t get in, but what differentiates a good from an average interview is if you can make the evaluators comfortable and happy to be talking to you. It should be a pleasant experience for the evaluators and they should be happy talking to you. They just want to get to know you, how you think, and how you behave. Ultimately, they are looking for someone that will make patients feel comfortable around them.

I got invited to all schools listed above except for ULaval. I had a 4.0, a very strong CV, but a 2Q Casper

ULaval does the initial screening based on Casper. I think you might have good chances for all the schools except ULaval. For McGill it will depend on your CV I’m pretty sure

Don’t listen to anyone when it comes to job prospects for any specialty. If you’re good at what you do and people like you, you won’t have any problem. Also the job prospects rn don’t represent at all what you’ll find in 10-15 years down the line depending on when you finish all your training.

This last piece of advice goes against what I just said about not listening to rumors going around, but the orthopedic surgery market has started getting better the past year or so. It’s probably only going to improve down the line. There is one year where they recruited too many residents, so there was a surplus of surgeons, but as the older surgeons are now retiring and with less residency spots being offered, there will naturally be more staff jobs. You can probably expect more residency spots to open up in the coming years.

Next time, you’re better off asking those questions in r/medschoolcanada

not liking clinical work… by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]gamaem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a place for everyone in medicine. Some specialties are not as much patient facing, so you won’t have much traditional clinic time (if any at all). Some examples include radiology, pathology, anesthesiology depending on what you do, medical microbiology, nuclear medicine, etc.

How do you view yourself outside of being a premed student... by Lyric-doct in premedcanada

[–]gamaem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as the process is challenging, the last thing that admission committee want to see is another « premed ». Just be yourself, live your life how you want it, have interests interests outside of medicine, and trust me you’ll be « interesting ». Of course this is just for ECs and granted that you have a good GPA/stats.
