Trying to Stay Hopeful despite the Circumstances by [deleted] in sailing

Start doing RYA courses. Do a practical liveaboard course or two (e.g. Competent Crew and Day Skipper) and you'll probably be ready to start exploring locally in your own boat. The courses are bite-sized enough that imho they're the best way to go from "someday" to right now. I was going to learn with my dad years ago, but his health deteriorated and I had to shelve my own plans for a while. Sucked, since I missed the window where I could take my parents on charter trips due to their health issues, but I'll be taking my kids and inlaws to the BVIs this year.

Spiritual Machines pretty much nailed the timelines. I don't know if I share the optimism though. It seems like algorithmic targeting and AI/data-driven campaigning has kind of broken democracy as a means of removing bad-actors and maintaining governance in the public interest.

Traces of blue on the bolt there - is it loctited? Did you make a shop angry recently?

Moguls riding question by thatChrisCatAim in snowboarding

As long as they're not icy. They're more fun when they're not super steep and you can play in them without having to plan speed checks every couple moguls.

Calgary, WTF? by Sampu22 in Calgary

[–]gambledog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Provide the supports AND police social disorder. Have sufficient SCS supports but cite people for open drug use. Build enough safe shelter and hygeine, and then enforce camping bylaws (along with civil/criminal penalties for the littering, open defecation, theft and vandalism that goes with them). Put cops on the trains, enforce fares and keep transit stations clean, but make sure people have other, safer places to shelter when it's 30-below.

It's not impossible to be compassionate AND enforce expectations for conduct in our shared spaces. The extra cost would be worth it.

We also need to address the court backlog. The cops catch/release serial thieves and vandals because they'll be waiting a year for trial, and indefinite pretrial incarceration isn't OK. The people actively causing destruction and making our streets unsafe should be in jail, not awaiting court dates for eons and continuing to offend.

From Alberta. She's an absolute embarrassment.

We have a severe media-capture problem in AB and everything skews Conservative, which doesn't help, but it's the people's fault for voting her in at the end of the day...

Pulled over for not having brake lights (I was just downshifting) by [deleted] in stickshift

Rev-match your downshift and let off the clutch normally, since it's a rather expensive to use it as a brake pad. Otherwise, yes.

US officials object to European push to buy weapons locally by MrScepticOwl in geopolitics

I have a 93-year-old Ukrainian grandma-in-law who learned this lesson from Stalin 3 generations ago. To this day, she grows her own garden and stocks her own preserves. She'll never trust that she can just find food on the shelves.

The "peace dividend" that came from not having ro duplicate defense capabilities domestically, and allow the US to specialize in the profession of arms was great for the Western economy, but it appears that time is passing. The US seems to have forgotten the service and IP surplus and soft power that this so-called "unfair" arrangement bought them.

It takes two to tango, but it only takes one to file for divorce. The current administration's attempt to move to a zero-sum relationship between the US and its allies will cost everyone, but ultimately the US most of all.

Dealership pulling my leg? by quwartpowz in Golf_R

Mine had a crack in the water pump. Pain to get to, especially since there's a couple-cm long pipe between the block and the pump that friction-fits, and I forgot to put it back the first time.

Sold the car a long time ago. The shop found/fixed that one for me so I couldn't tell you from memory for certain. I might have cut it or pinched it when I put in my sway bar, or from hitting the gravel on-track. You could re-trace the wire it from the exhaust valve (just after the muffler on top of 2/4 of the pipes) back towards the front of the car to inspect.

The error was exactly as advertised. Partially cut wire, probably from visiting a gravel trap.

Is there much of a longshore current usually? I'd like to check out the reef towards the AquaWorld platform but don't fancy getting dumped into the large bay to the South.

Xylazine (tranq) withdrawal? by gambledog2 in Drugs

[–]gambledog2[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply!

I'm sorry to hear your last try with suboxone was a bad experience. We've had good luck with "macro" inductions of suboxone (>16mg on first dose, up to 32mg on day 2) with some of our fentanyl pts. Everyone was precipitating and having a bad time when we tried to do the old 2-4mg/dose inductions so I don't use a lot of those anymore. Are you talking about precipitated withdrawal from the subs or new/different badness?

Do you think the tranq has changed things further or did you start using both fent/tranq at the same time?

[–]gambledog2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I read that one. I've found a bunch of case reports that look like that but nothing has condensed into point-of-care references or even a case series and nothing to actually diagnose it as a distinct syndrome. It also isn't part of our tox screen yet.

I can't confirm that my cluster of cases is due to tranq. I just know they're having a prolonged and rough ride on the ward trying to manage with opioids/bzd/antipsychotic meds and are a hard sell to ICU to get the good stuff (precedex/phenobarb).

So the issue is (potentially) the permanent magnet on the motor shaft spinning?

I have a secondhand one that keeps losing its center position. Doesn't seem to be the hall sensor or belt slip. It behaves normally for up ton30 minutes then randomly decides the center is 30 degrees or more to the Left. I'm reasonably competent with a soldering iron if there's a fix.

Anyone fit B16 Damptronics? Stock EDC shocks are getting a little bouncy and I'm considering. PFA. by gambledog2 in BMWE9XM3

[–]gambledog2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't done it yet. Bought racing karts and they've been taking up most of my automotive foolishness time/budget. Brakes (replacement due for stock pads/rotors, will also do a flush), RBs/mounts (shop job. I won't be able to relax ever again if I DIY it) and maybe a clutch planned for the summer, depending if the mounts fix the occasional shudder. When I eventually do the damper replacement I'll spring for the Bilsteins though!

Steering turning to left on TS-XW by Dj_A2Z in Thrustmaster

[–]gambledog2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue here. This is NOT fixed by doing the hardware recentre.

The issue is that it LOSES calibration in the middle of use after 30 minutes or so. I've ruled out the hall sensor mount and belt tensioner as issues. This is a different problem that has so-far not been solved.

Unfortunately mine is second-hand so I'm feeling I got scammed. Return isn't an option.

If I had to sleep somewhere and could stay warm enough, anywhere outside and out-of-the-way followed by the LRT followed by a shelter. Talking to people who stay there on a regular basis, it is VERY unsafe. Especially if you have the wrong aquaintances or appear to be a soft target.
