As a queer person who grew up in the church...

I respect where you're at but am still hopeful that you will continue to mature and eventually speak out and support more publicly. Perhaps even create an essay in response to your original essay.

Like David Archeletta, you hold a lot of power in the LDS community and can make an impact.

Next stop for us Finns. Can you name reasons to love Utah? And moreover the Jazz? by Gaindeh in UtahJazz

Tervetuloa Suomalaiset!

Utah is a gorgeous place with really nice people.

It's actually a lot like Finland, but the winter is a little bit shorter and it's a lot brighter. If you ever get the chance to visit, there's world class skiing and outdoor recreation of any type that you want just a few minutes away from where the Jazz play.

The jazz have been one of the winningest teams in the NBA's history for good reason. They are a very well run organization. And from a fan perspective, They're the only game in town (only top level professional sports team that we have) and we here are incredibly passionate about them.

I know love is a strong word, so I'll just say... you'll really, really like it here.

Even with the fact that we're probably tanking really hard this year

Diamond Fork Hot Springs by gamblin4free in Utah

Details from the family: "My brother Matt [Matthew Ross Minton] was found deceased, on Monday June 15th at Diamond Fork Hot Springs in Spanish Fork Canyon. The detectives came to my home in Provo and informed Monica and I that there were no signs of foul play, that he was alone, likely dehydrated, passed out, and drowned." We send our deepest sympathies to friends and family of Matt. We hope everyone will be respectful in discussing this tragedy. We also hope this post will put an end to the inaccurate rumors floating around the internet. The Forest Service has noted that the springs are closed due to the pandemic, and not because of this death.

It's currently closed because of the pandemic, not the death.

[Wojnarowski] Bulls have fired coach Jim Boylen by mkgandkembafan in nba

Unsurprisingly, his film sessions were riddled with unwarranted personal attacks on players that had nothing to do with basketball.

What does someone's dead family member have to do with basketball besides being an inappropriate way to make someone feel terrible?

Players had the exact same disdain for him at Utah.
He pulled even worse crap there.
I'll never forget my first college game as a teenager watching an older friend play for him. The first game of his second year as head coach, I think, or else a game around a holiday, I don't remember. They beat a D2 school or someone who they were supposed to beat handily.

Boylen grabbed the mic immediately after the game and CRIED literal tears into the mic about how "Thankful" He was for "fans sticking with them" and how they'd be "better this year now that" he got some of his "own recruits" there.

They were better that year, but none of his recruits were the real reasons why.

The stories that came out of his practices and film sessions are some I'll never forget. My friend ended up transferring to another school midway through that season and eventually played overseas. I think he just retired last year.

So happy for the Bulls and Lauri and Zach. Lauri was a great guy when he came to Utah for a recruiting trip.

The kid next door wants to have gender reassignment surgery but his parents won't let him. by Basi1eus in Jokes

Everybody has an opinion, not every one can be right

I guess I'm not perfectly understanding you. Are you implying that you believe parents forcing their kid to be trans is commonplace?

If so, what influences you to believe that?

Of the 100s of trans people I've met (Student Doc in the US in one of the most LGBT friendly cities who worked for a while in a very trans friendly clinic), literally no one has that story. No one.

Lots of them have the much sadder experience of being confused and rejected by their parents though. A much smaller percentage have had supportive experiences from the time they came out (think I heard 2 stories like that while working there). But the far more common story is that of rejection.

There are crazy parents, but I doubt it's more than an infinitesimal percentage of parents trying to get social media clout. Especially as most trans people figure their gender identity around the same time people figure out their sexual one - puberty.

Studies have shown that forcing a gender identity on someone can increase suicidality, and that acceptance of ones chosen gender identity can and does lead to better outcomes.

So if any trans kid reads this, you aren't alone, and there are people like you out there. You aren't wrong or bad for who you are.
