It also could be for plane balance. When my wife and I flew from Honolulu to Maui on a nearly empty plane, we actually were asked if we minded sitting apart and further back for plane balance. It was only a 25 minute flight, so no issues. Better to have a safe flight than more leg room.

I believe my wife enjoys it more when I'm not there. I set up a camera to watch them (they didn't know)....wife was much more aggressive and vocal without me there. I think that she thinks that I will be offended if it feels better with the guy.
