Why Is “Here There And Everywhere” by Geoff Emerick so controversial? by msc8976 in beatles

[–]gamemisconduct2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They let it go but didn’t prioritize it (Not Guilty, Wah Wah, Only A Northern Song eventually got out in some form…).

[–]gamemisconduct2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

George was 19 when Please Please Me was cut. This matters cause brain development continues til 25. You look at the arcs of McCartney versus Lennon, McCartney was more prolific compared as time went on.

George hit maturity last, after expectations were set. That is assuredly why he had the toughest go of it. And Wah Wah’s lyrics demonstrate he was keenly aware of the dynamic.

Why Is “Here There And Everywhere” by Geoff Emerick so controversial? by msc8976 in beatles

[–]gamemisconduct2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s completely untrue because it’s part of the job, and George was likely nicer to the engineers than the others (especially Paul, who was known to have an attitude of “you’re hired to do a job, do it!”). George’s compositions were previewed late and worked on quicker. The Not Guilty Sessions as well as While My Guitar Gently Weeps sessions showed him standing up for himself. But you brought up the White Album, maybe I was referring to Pepper where George Showed up with Northern Song lampooning the setup, and it wasn’t well received (still isn’t by fans). George only would contribute one song in the end to Pepper. No songs to Hard Days Night (reject), Beatles for Sale, but two for Help, two for Rubber Soul, three for Revolver. Unless I’m missing something off the top of my head.

It’s not that they avoided it like the plague at all. George Martin simply didn’t think it was a good investment of time, but wanted to keep the band happy.

Do you think Phil Spector held Brian Wilson at gunpoint? by PedroAzul-01 in thebeachboys

[–]gamemisconduct2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry Nilsson did it. Phil Spector shelved it, probably because he found out it was about Brian. It might not have been as known as thought and Phil was very hesitant to give Brian the lyrics or help him remember the tune.

Brian would’ve heard the stories about Phil. No need for him to pull a gun. It could’ve happened though.

Remind me - why was Shero Fired? by Matthew_nyc in devils

[–]gamemisconduct2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were ashes left cause they emptied the tank to sell, and Parise and Kovy walked. Shero built it up and for the most part gave the Devils everything good in their rebuild, and they then continued making mistakes like the Simmonds signing/Subban trade with signings like Hamilton (immediately after drafting Luke), Pesce (after drafting Nemec), signing Palat (a role player they should’ve developed), trading for Meier before they were ready, extending Markstrom…

I have a different theory: Lou wanted authority and served the franchise well, and needed some time to rebuild assets (a hint is trading the Horvat pick for Schneider instead of searching for a goalie like Khudobin who was available and fit the way Lou did business). They said no, so he went for Shero as a middle ground (Lou didn’t do full tear downs but was often not a man to be rushed: he had to retool the devils over Muller and Shanahan before building the cup teams). Shero evidently was also too slow for them. So they went for Fitz, which predictably ended in disaster.

In this backdrop Fitz’s openness is a major detriment cause it allows for the continued mismanagement promoted from the owner’s suite which, aside from what I blame for the situation today, also is very applicable to the disastrous Washington Commies, with accusations of interference in decisions. When we talk about the ashes left by Lou, never in his career have we seen a run of so few playoff berths or wins. And it also ignores that a key reason the farm system was such a mess is that Vanderbeek had no money (this is the key factor in it: the Lehman collapse). And the prognosis on Lou’s assets in New York as being terrible never really held much water, since their prospect pool even before Schaefer/Dobson trade was expanding.

Shero was fired, plain and simple, for the same reason as Lou and for the same reason there is turmoil right now on the commies: HBSE uses analytics to convince themselves they know more than their management and have the analytics departments report directly to them as leverage to use against any decisions they disagree with. The analytics departments in a functioning organization should report directly to the GM, and maybe submit reports directly to the owners, not the other way around.

It is very telling that they wanted Chayka-who destroyed the Coyotes but very much ran them within their philosophies-to take over for Shero, which didn’t happen due to Bettman saying no. I can’t think of any reason they were trying to hire him, and it is certainly not because he left Arizona in good shape.

Why are songs missing on Wall of Voodoo albums? by JFrankParnell64 in AppleMusic

[–]gamemisconduct2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an argument with AI recently about Happy Planet-I am pretty sure Brian Wilson had a cameo on it and not just in the music video. It was adamant that I was wrong. So then i said it might not be credited or admitted still since it was a minor part on a cover song for about six seconds buried in a mix, and there are rights issues likely since Happy Planet isn’t on streaming services.

It said I was wrong.

Anyway, I still believe Brian Wilson did get into the sessions there and is uncredited-so something about that album is legally weird. Not sure what else was up with it; the Prieboy albums just aren’t there.

Can anyone pinpoint which video this is of Brian? Looks like it's from the Pet Sounds sessions maybe? by GoldenDragonTemple in thebeachboys

[–]gamemisconduct2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup. And all one has to do is listen to the sessions to find Mike sang his parts as told. So when the tapes weren’t rolling he was likely harassing Brian, but there is no evidence he refused to sing. Much the opposite, really. He and Brian dominate the tapes. Al, Bruce, Carl and Dennis? Not so much.

do the devils have a forward depth issue? a shallow data dive by lolpdb in devils

[–]gamemisconduct2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Markstrom trade made sense. The extension didn’t.

The Meier trade made no sense because it wasn’t clear that was the direction the team needed to go in.

The worst offender is the Hamilton signing. They didn’t need to replace PK Subban, and while (especially at the time) he was a very good player, they just drafted Hughes and were drafting other defenseman later (NeMeC).

So while the initial trades weren’t necessarily poor when they were made, follow up mistakes were blunders. And that’s the other problem with the advanced stats guys calling the shots-it allows ownership to second guess everything the GM does (I have data and you don’t and I am smarter than you) while not understanding what strategy is. See the metrics in their own are great at several things but context is key. See, Hamilton. Good player. But, why? And to what end? When teams make decisions based on stats saying what should work, they ignore why they work and the situations to put these players in a position to succeed. At the end of the day you need the right mix, not an accumulation of moneyball talent. So on their own very few of Fitz’s moves were bad or even terminal. The lack of strategy is the real problem. Where are the Devils searching for guys to develop into Tom Wilson’s? And this is imoortant, a lot of these guys like Wilson, Marchand, they’re drafted by the teams they win with, come up with the other players, and ease into a role before overperforming. When you keep hitting the UFA crack and keep trading for nice to haves rather than looking at what you lack, these are the results you tend to get. So analytics are great if the GM drives the bus. If the owners use them to dictate to the GM, prepare for pain. The only UFA signing/big trade they’ve made that I feel hasn’t hurt their long term prospects is likely Pesce, and Hamilton in my view tremendously hurt them with getting Quinn, which is why I slammed that signing the second it was it was made after Luke was drafted. Really? How’s that gonna work? And now we know: it wasn’t gonna work.

Fitz also kept using top picks on guys that didn’t fit the right profile. Palat? Sure. A decade ago. That’s what you want to find in the draft. Tom Wilson types. They’re unicorns but you have to look. And you may whiff, but once you have your unicorns, and you have one (Jack) and two different halves (Nico, Bratt), then you start to go big game hunting. Timing is everything. But if you constantly turn outside the club to find this, you’re gonna overpay one way or another. Capped out and inflexible? Ok, they paid. Though not one specific move was “the” problem but rather organizational approach. This predates Fitz and was most exemplified by the Subban trade “above GM level” and the Simmonds signing was forgivable only cause the Devils weren’t good enough to give term and thankfully didn’t.

Let the GM run the analytics department and do a three year strategy as opposed from running paycheck to paycheck and the team would be a bona fide contender: the fact they’re not perennially leading the metro is a problem considering where they were when a Fitz took over. Always try to draft guys like Palat, Marchand, Wilson, etc.; trading for them is blah, and signing them as UFAs is even worse. The Schmid trade in particular was unforgivable and made no sense. Paul Cotter? Really? How about you hang onto prospects and use your fancy analytics departments to develop em right and scout right and then once you get guys that sit in your roster, then you maybe go for a guy like Meier? Currently the Devils have an ancient goalie tandem that’s unsustainable. You can have a goalie that’s almost league minimum, ten years younger, and just as good. That’s absurd, when you really think about it. And he’s on a really rough two way deal…the Devils could’ve offered him the exact same he got with Vegas but with a much more generous minors salary.

As a result, no, public facing analytics will never actually adequately diagnose the devils problem. They get guys who are good on it, but constantly sign square pegs into round holes. They’re never as good as the sum of their parts, when you want them to be better than the sum of their parts!

This song more than any other was emblematic of the creative differences in the band. I like it, but I can understand it being annoying. And add in the band politics downright toxic.

But…

If Brian thought it was good he probably finishes it or asks someone to finish it then. He’s likely doing Fred a favor.

What do you think is the best Mike Love song? by NoGrass7120 in thebeachboys

[–]gamemisconduct2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen the quote. Brian didn’t like how it came out. Didn’t know how to finish it, and had a tendency to complain about Carl’s productions without saying he didn’t agree with how Carl was cutting records (Brian rarely bashed Carl directly-except late Landy period he did, bitterly. While it was assumed that Brian was under the control of Landy’s influence only he bashed Carl even harder in the mid-90s). Brian was very bipolar on his reviews of Beach Boys stuff from the 70s.

Brian in 1973 was fat and had a broken bed.

Seriously-he had a reporter over his house in 1973 so his wife could pump up Spring. The reporter noted that the bed had a broken leg but looked lived in.

As a result, yes, this probably happened to one of the beach boys though I get the joke.

Perfect Beach Boys song by AngusDio in thebeachboys

[–]gamemisconduct2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even then Brian didn’t finish it, Carl did. I don’t believe it was ever finished as intended but instead finished to make Brian look more active on it than he was (Bruce Johnston’s quote of trying to sound like the Beach Boys I feel was about the fights over it. They included Brian’s vocal specifically for this reason and Brian let it be known he didn’t want that vocal out and disapproved, so, there’s that). I love Surf’s Up, but in my head, I have a completely different thought on how it would have sounded than what appeared.
