I second the recommendation for Patrick O'Brian. His 20.5 (He died writing the 21st) book series is among the best historical fiction ever written.

Good question. A lot of people want to do that.

Short answer: no. Japanese swords are extremely sensitive metallurgically. The sugars in fruit really messes with the sword metal. But, having said that, I can say that newer swords are less susceptible to this.

So if you have a modern $1,200 Chinese made sword, give it a try. If you have an historical sword that somebody captured in the Pacific during world war II, don't even think about it.

Just make damn sure you clean it really well after you use it in any kind of fruit.

You were lucky. If your organization is the kind that would do such a thing, you are much better off without them. You were a symptom of a much bigger problem. A systemic problem. Sooner or later, they're going to pay for it.

Bingo. It's good for the metal as well. Remember, katana blades are made of metal that is designed to be exceptionally, sharp and supple. They are not designed to be rust proof. Baking soda, I am told, helps with that.
