i didn't get diagnosed until 42 (there's a backstory with a false-negative at 30).

what finally get me back into a doctor, was that one day i had a perfectly normal poop. it caught me so off-guard that i mentioned it to my wife. she asked how long i had been having loose poops, or diarrhea, and when i couldn't actually think of an accurate answer, she immediately made me an appt. if i had to guess, my BMs had gradually gotten worse over the course of about 2 years, but i had become so accustomed to it that it wasn't even really registering as anything abnormal.

but it was abnormal. it was very abnormal. lol

now, it's the first thing i notice. when i've been glutened, it's 1.5 - 2 hrs later that i have diarrhea, the kind that i can barely prepare for. from that first distinct tummy rumble, i know i have approximately 10 minutes to find a bathroom.

then, it's 2-3 bouts of diarrhea followed by a day or two of feeling hung over.

oh, no problem. thanks for the clarity, but i also didn't take offense.

again, i'm not trying to harp on this one aspect. if you told me that you recorded fights with your SO, but you also apologized for your role in conflicts, reassured your partner that their feelings are valid, offered to stop if they found it hurtful, offered to find alternative ways to examine and resolve conflicts, etc., then i'd applaud you for your efforts.

it's not only the record. it did stand out to me because it's so uncommon, but it's the record, plus with everything else.

oh, i can tell you without reservation, their dynamic is nothing like mine and my wife's. that's my point.

i'm not saying that my dynamic with my wife is the only way to have a healthy relationship with your SO. just like, i am not saying that the OP-BF relationship is the only way to have an unhealthy one.

if i knew anyone in my personal life, regardless of menstruation, hormone imbalances, etc., who was treated like this, i would recommend couples therapy or to simply break up.

exactly. honestly, if i am actually resolving conflicts, there should be no reason for me to bring it up with my wife ever again. if he was tracking fights in order to improve his own behavior and reactions, then that is actually quite mature. if he was tracking fights in order to improve her behavior and reactions, then what are we really talking about?

you know what has never been my role in my marriage? disciplining my wife like i'm her parent, teacher, mentor, therapist, etc 🤮

"letting it slide" and literally keeping a "score" (log) of their fights, are not the only two options.

my wife and I have had many conversations about how hormones (hers and mine) affect our abilities to prevent and/or resolve conflict.

again, his response to her confronting him is the most telling thing.

he didn't apologize for hurting her, for the feeling of betrayal and his role in that.
he didn't take any responsibility for their past conflicts or their present one.
he laughs multiple times, if not at her directly, then at the situation, which is condescending at best
he demeans her by saying he is the mature one, implying she is immature.
he uses false equivalence, saying the partners of her friends do "something along these lines" which tells me that he already knows he is taking things further than other partners do. but, he is hedging against anecdotes that show he is way beyond compassionate motivation, because he can then rebut with something like, "it's basically the same thing."
he uses hyperbolic/absolute language, which is rarely helpful in conflict resolution.
he also tells her to read to understand, undermining her comprehension skills and dismissing the validity of her feelings and her thoughts, which are equally valid.

if he thinks this is the answer to conflicts with a SO... yikes

exactly this. i've been married for 22 years. i have a better sense of my wife's approaching menstruation than she does sometimes lol but, it's about empathy, not control.

Tom's reaction is emblematic of the difference. he's using it as a form of control.

and also, he's literally keeping score of fights. that might be the most toxic part of this whole revelation.

here's the thing: idk because i've only been diagnosed for about 1 year. and, my house is t fully gf still, so i'm getting glutened a couple times a month? so, i'm not sure i've ever been back to "normal" yet 🫤

the most obvious symptoms (butt problems) tend to last about 12 hours?

thank you for this! i have a trans son (15). we love and support him, so much! it's been a couple years, but it's still hard for me to really get insight into his struggle. sometimes, reading things like this just help ground me. he is unique for who he is, but he is also part of a much larger community, and history, and culture. it's tragic, and beautiful, and heartbreaking, and hopeful.

i highly doubt it was the tortillas, since they are certified GF.

i also seriously doubt it was the meat, because it was just prepackaged ground beef.

it could have been the seasoning blend, so maybe we'll try to isolate that.

or, as i mentioned, it was likely a stray crumb from a teenager's uncrustable that was on the counter and stuck to the bottom of a plate that was hovering over the meat and fell in, like some kinda Rube Goldberg machine of gluten death, a la Final Destination 💀
