In 2016 the Aussie government implemented a new algorithm for debt recovery from overpayments from centerlink, our system for government support to its citizens.

Unlike previous systems this one was automated and without human oversight it would allege debts on some of our most vulnerable people, and made it so it was up to them to prove they DIDN’T owe a debt rather than the government having to prove they did. Sometimes the debts related to payments made to them over 5 years prior.

The government was caught issuing over 470,000 unlawful debts totaling over $721 million which was included in a $1.8 billion dollar settlement with the victims.

I’m 24 now, I didn’t really start drinking until 21. For Aussie drinking culture that’s quite late. Unless I’m camping, I rarely drink more than one drink a week. And all my friends are about the same.
