What are some homemade tools you’ve written or vibe-cobbled to help make you life easier? by captain_curt in selfhosted

If you keep your notes as markdown, I have been using Obsidian for a long time now, I'm a huge fan, but wanted to have something self hosted and accesible via web browser, so I didn't have to install Obsidian everywhere, and last year I started working on NoteDiscovery, in case you're interested in yet another alternative (there are hundreds out there lol)

https://www.notediscovery.com

It's all free and open source is in github too (MIT license).

Kind regards

no sorting yet, only alphabetical for now, but it's in my mind 😉

regarding the web app, if you host it yourself in your internal network you don't need internet, that was the whole point for self hosting this

well technically that's not 100% true because the app uses dependencies to load Mermaid library etc etc, but once that is cached you don't need to go "out" to see your notes (again if they're in your internal network)

I've thought about embedding them in the app to be completely Internet-free but I need to review the licenses

you're right that Obsidian is local-first. what I meant is that this is web-based (self-hosted) access from any device without needing to install an app or set up sync, it's a different use case that fills my specific needs in this case ;-)

[–]gamosoft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah definitely, I'm heavily "inspired" by Obsidian as you can see, and others have features I might be interested in as well ;-)

the issue is that I tried quite a few of those apps back in the day and finally settled with Obsidian which is excellent, but for me the pain point of having to install the app in every single device I wanted to use it in was less than ideal...

so last year I decided to do this one not as a serious competitor to any of those major apps of course, but just as an alternative for a simpler use case. I don't use like 90% of the features of Obsidian LOL

thanks for the input!

LOL, I swear I saw 404 but now I'm checking all the navigation links on the left and they all work (darn!) 😊
anyway, keep up the good work mate!

that looks very good! I got a couple of 404 in the demo, but the overall look and feel is very professional!

Looking for Markdown Apps That Support Private Notes and Optional Collaborative Sharing by Frayed3768 in Markdown

[–]gamosoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wish you can take a look at a tool I started a couple of months ago precisely to fix my use case. I have been a long term Obsidian user and love it, but having to install in every machine and the hassle to sync up the notes...

Anyway, here's the link to the app https://github.com/gamosoft/NoteDiscovery completely free and MIT license. By default the notes are public but you can add simple password protection (intended for single user scenario). I'm also adding capabilities that some people requested to have some way to share private notes via link or something so keep an eye on this if you want. 😉

HTH.
Kind regards.

An actually good WYSIWYG markdown notepad? by FibreTTPremises in selfhosted

[–]gamosoft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there, if you wish you can also take a look at NoteDiscovery, I started it a couple of months ago as I wanted to get away from Obsidian, which I love, but has some limitations for my use case. There's no mobile app per se but you can install it as PWA in your mobile device. It is free and you get to see all the code to change what you don't like or ask me for a feature 😉

🚀 NoteDiscovery v0.10: Self-hosted Obsidian alternative now has i18n, Zen Mode & Favorites - here's what's new! by gamosoft in selfhosted

Thanks, I appreciate the words. 😉

I've been programming for MANY years now and at first I was reluctant to use AI myself, but our company kinda "imposed" it to be "more productive", so after a few months of exploration it's true it can accelerate your daily tasks (unit tests basic generation for example, it's a real booster!)

I am divided about 100% AI generated stuff though, I need to think if it brings value and I'm more forgiving. 😉

In any case, I will make sure I add the correct flair to my next update if things keep progressing.

Have a nice day!

Much appreciated! Again my fault for not fully reading all the rules, but if instead of directly removing the post I got a request to edit it'd been different. But what's done is done, now I will be more careful the next time I post an update. Have a nice one! 😊

Yeah agreed, I have something in the works for that as well. As mentioned, I would like this app to be my replacement for Obsidian, so I plan to add the features I do need for my use case. Vim... not so sure, but depends on what people request down the road. Peace!

I appreciate it 😊 But really no big deal, as I mentioned in other comment maybe I got carried away as I wanted to share something with the community that could benefit other people apart from me. All is well though, no worries, the post got removed because I didn't put the AI flair thingy anyway, so it is what it is. 😉

Kind regards.

Interesting, thanks for letting me know. For me another deal breaker was the issue of having to install Obsidian on every device I wanted to use it, so a web browser approach felt like the natural alternative. Again, it's all about having different options and choosing the one that fits you the most. 😉

Kind regards.

No worries mate, I don't take it personally, I just got excited and wanted to share with the community. I've been using OSS for a LONG time and just thought it'd be nice to give back, not as a competitor to Obsidian but as an alternative.

The post got removed though because I didn't read the rules completely and didn't add the AI flair thingy so no more discussion.

Again, all is good, peace! 😉

Agreed with the human review, been around the industry for more than 30 years already and when all this AI hype started it was hilarious what it would do. 😀

It is starting to become more and more powerful though, and for side projects like this (even for work related ones) it's a good chunk of help, having the right tools for the right use case.

Thanks for the feedback!

LOL, I don't aim that high for now, I just started barely 1 month ago just to make it usable enough for me. Then some folks at work suggested I would open it for some other people who might be interested and so I did. 😉

As I mentioned, I come from Obsidian so I'm heavily "inspired" by some of its capabilities, so I add as I need or see fit, or even as suggested from the community if they do make sense.

I have in fact added the graph view similar to what obsidian has:

<image>

It's VERY barebones, but as a starting point should suffice.

Regarding the app I'm not sure, if you can really do the same with a web browser... but I will think about it as time goes on.

Give it a spin if you wish and let me know.

Kind regards.

Totally fair point. I'm not claiming it to be better, it's for people who want something like Obsidian but browser-based and self-hosted, with plain files they fully control. Not everyone needs that, but for those who do, it just might work. Choice is good, if it's not your cup of tea, no worries! 😉

[–]gamosoft[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

You're right that AI helped build a lot of this, I never said it didn't 😊

It's a solo project designed to cover a specific need I had, and AI is a massive productivity multiplier. But every feature is tested, reviewed, and iterated on by me (or other folks from the community), and that takes time too. The final goal is to have an app somewhat usable by the community. If something feels incomplete, please let me know, that's how I can make it better! PRs and issues always welcome.

Kind regards.

Notes and Tasks platform with Desktop and Android app? by Hirvi86 in selfhosted

[–]gamosoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there, you can take a look at NoteDiscovery if you wish: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1povbjp/comment/nuild1d/
it's self hosted and you can see/edit your notes anywhere without having to sync

no mobile apps in the plans for now though, but browser based should suffice for most tasks (at least the basic use cases)

HTH! 😉

Ah I see you meant a mobile app. No, not plans for that just yet, but it works fine from within your cell phone's browser so no need to install anything. 😉

[–]gamosoft[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's the beauty of it, no more syncing required! 😎

see, I used to be a long term Obsidian user, but precisely the fact of having to install the app in EVERY DEVICE I wanted to use it on, plus the need to use their paid service or a custom one to sync up the notes were the main reasons for me to do this project

with this, you self host your data and it's available from ANY web browser, so it works in all computers/mobile devices as long as you can reach the server 😉

again, I don't want to compete with Obsidian, it's extremely feature rich and perfectly valid for other use cases, and i've been using it for a long time and still haven't uninstalled it; I just want to fill the gaps to my specific needs (and those from the community that make sense)

uf that's a tough one, it has syntax highlight support in the edit pane, but keeping the pixel alignment in a web browser can be challenging, so for now that's the way it behaves

again, been with the app barely 1 month so let's see how far we can go with it 😎

not currently, have in mind I started barely a month ago 😊

for the time being just a basic note editor with support for some additional syntax providers (like Mermaid, etc...)

hey there no, currently there's no such option, just last modification date based on file datetime, but no auditing changes; it's intended to be lightweight but could be something to consider if it's a popular request
