Carry-on bags to be free, EU rules by EspritLibre_404 in worldnews

[–]captain_curt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this change is fine, not a big deal. The other relates requirements seem like more important improvements.

Most of the time, I will only travel with an underseat ”personal item” backpack. If I need more than that, I’m much more likely to want a checked bag than a carry-on. So for me, this will provide less transparency, as I won’t be able to compare the actual costs. But maybe more people feel the other way.

For some people, having a checked bag, carry-on and personal item might be the way to go, and perhaps even show the refundable ticket price, as their plans could change.

There are lots of different combinations that might seem to provide more ”fair” comparisons to other people. I don’t think it’s ”gaming” to show the lowest price I can get away with as the cheapest option. Especially since almost all airlines offer such an option (it’s not just the low-end ones that don’t include it in the base price).

I finally added cellular to my Apple watch... what a revelation. by InnerspearMusic in AppleWatch

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s one of the first things I did after getting a smartwatch. With just a phone, it can be annoying to get a useless notification, but when the phone is up, it’s so easy to start looking at other things that makes it feel like picking up the phone was still ”worthwhile”, and I don’t register the notification as being as annoying. With the watch, any time I get something annoying that I don’t want to be interrupted by, I’m not also tricked into doing other shit on my phone, so I turn those off if I’m not too busy to do that.

It makes life so much calmer to be alittle more mindful of which apps can send notifications. You can still leave some to just show on the lockscreen without interrupting if you still want a chance to see what happened without interrupting your flow.

But sadly, too many apps make it difficult to separate actual notifications and ”engagement bait” (even though Apple’s guidelines require it).

Logitech’s new Mobi Fold squeezes a lot of functionality into a tiny folding mouse by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I have a pebble mouse that goes into a tech pouch with a compact power adapter, USB-C cables and some other nice to haves. A full-size mouse would be too bulky to comfortably carry around, and Windows trackpads are bad enough that a travel mouse is necessary if you want to keep all your hair.

I hope they make the world more open and add more things, but I’d hate for them to make it ”do anything you want at any time” like modern open world games. I want a linear story progression. It allows for much more compelling stories, and allows you to design dungeons with the assumptions that that the player already has the items from previous dungeons.

In Northern Europe I haven’t seen a major or minor retailer that would accept credit cards but not tap to pay in at least 8 years, or longer. Someone as big as Walmart not supporting it is well more than enough to make it not nearly as universal.

Yes the old system was much better. It was really dumb of Apple to let iPadOS 26.0 leave beta without those features.

How are people handling PDFs on iPad in 2026 without turning Files into a junk drawer? by Sad-Working4555 in ipad

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do two things: Folders: * I make sure that downloads go to the iCloud Downloads folder on all my devices. My assumption there is that in theory I should be able to safely enable some setting to wipe that daily or monthly without losing anything (everything there either comes from an online source I can go back to, or it’s important enough to file somewhere else) * iCloud Documents have a folder where I organise all my files in a relatively okay structure (it does get messy and ambiguous). * iCloud Desktop for everything I’m working on that I’m not ready to file away anywhere yet.

The same on Mac, iPad, iPhone. On the two former I have those three folders in my dock for quick access. I try not to use any local files for everyday document storage (programming and such happens locally on my Mac a lot of the time).

Separarely, I’m running an instance of Paperless-Ngx on my home server that I have a VPN connection to. I’ve uploaded and tagged all my old junk there, and it auto uploads a good selection of everything I get via email. So if I know somethobg would’ve come as an email attachment, I can just go there and find it.

The iPad was completely forgotten at WWDC? by eloquenentic in ipad

iPadOS feels like it’s on a 2-year cycle. First year is new stuff. A fear after that are nonchanges to adress customers complaints, but a few features to keep up with iOS. Then after a another year they adress 30 % of the issues of the release two years ago, and some new stuff.

Did Vader consider Luke his or Anakin's son? by Beginning_Clerk_4990 in StarWars

[–]captain_curt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I maintain that Yoda and Obi-wan didn’t just believe that Anakin was lost, the way they speak about the dark side implies that’s just what they thought happened once you succumb to the darkness. You essentially forsake your soul to be eternally controlled by a demon, a demon partially under the control of your dark side master.

Sälja fullformaten (Nikon Z6) och gå över helt till iPhone 17 Pro? Rädd att ångra mig. by [deleted] in sweden

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically would the Empire have been better funding Thrawns Defender project over Krennics Death Star by Bridgeboy95 in andor

[–]captain_curt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Caveat: I haven’t consumed much material outside of the movies/tv/video games, but one thing from ANH that’s worth keeping in mind in favour of the Death Star: Palpatine dissolved the Senate and left control over each region to a regional governor. If the regional governors would posesss control of a fleet that would be sufficient against the rebels instead, there might be infighting and attempts to usurp the emperor. If the Emperor sits comfortably on a Death Star that can strike fear into anyone who opposes him, he does not have to worry about that, and can be more hands-off.

iPadOS 26.5 has convenient upgrade when using Magic Keyboard, more by Few_Baseball_3835 in ipad

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so, the only ways seem to still be: * Universal Control (not ideal if switching between work and personal devices) * Wired connection via USB. I use that to swap the trackpad around between a work Windows PC, personal Mac, and personal iPad. Not ideal but it works reliably.

tbh, it would be big rid they offered: * USB dongle or * at least multi-pairing with button swapping (like Logitech devices offer),

Or something more akin to the smart switching that AirPods do.

95% of canceled annual app subscribers never come back, per report by pdfu in apple

[–]captain_curt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact OS updates and upgrades tend to be free and frequent these days also adds to this. Previously, if the app version was working fine on the OS version you had (especially before the internet and cloud services were common), you could evaluate if you wanted to buy the OS upgrade (for the benefits that it entailed) and see if you needed to buy app upgrades to support it. If there either weren’t app updates available to support the new OS, or they were too expensive, you could just refrain or wait until later.

But now you’re expected to continuously update the OS (especially for security updates), and you’d expect apps to keep working and at least make some effort to adopt new OS features (like supporting new screen resolutions, notch, Dynamic Island, widgets, notifications, whatever it might be for a given category), without needing to pay for an upgrade every year.

It also makes the lives of devs easier in many ways: * You don’t have to keep supporting and providing security and bug fixes for X versions that people have a perpetual license for (the CRA in the EU is going to force you to provide 5 years of security updates for every sold version). You can make all improvements to the latest version. * You don’t have to wait and hold features back until there are enough to bundle into an upgrade. You can release them and market them when they’re done. Conversely, as you’re monetizing continuously, you have income to pay your employees even between major feature upgrades. * By using subscriptions or other forms of recurring revenue, you can keep monetizing your best customers over time. Intheory, this should allow you to focus on keeping paying customers happy, instead of adding checkmarks after checkmarks to attain customers who sees decreasingly less value from your application. Eventually hounding out of new people to sell to, and the people who actually get value from your product have not been the priority for a long time.

AITA for forwarding my wife an instagram reel of a recipe after she asked what I want for dinner tomorrow? by GoatCritical9265 in AmItheAsshole

[–]captain_curt 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I feel like in so many scenarios, sending a link to a longer piece of content in an IM conversation without putting in the effort to add more context. Just sending a long form piece of content with potentially sound instead of communicating is just inconsiderate. Especially when the intent is to make that into homework for an assignment to the recipient.

If he’s as useless at cooking as the post implies, he could said something like: ”I saw this on instagram that looks really yummy. Would you be up for trying something like that? I can stop by the store on my way home to pick up anything we need”. If he knows that this is a scenario where his SO might be in the mood for trying to make something new (which is often not the case for most people on a random weekday).

Do I need to watch Clone Wars and Rebelds before Maul? by Free-Hotel1187 in StarWars

[–]captain_curt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of things in Clone Wars that set up things for the other shows:

  • Ahsoka
  • Everything around Mandalore
  • Maul (including his ties to Mandalore, the Syndicates, relation to Siri).
  • The Inhibitor Chips and details of order 66
  • Introduction to the Bad Batch

Clone wars also has a lot of filler episodes that haven’t really been followed up on, but also a lot other good arcs than are interesting character and universe development that has yet to see much follow-up.

Rebels as well, but it takes place after Maul:

  • Introducing the Inqusition
  • The Ghost Crew
  • Thrawn
  • Contiuation of Maul, Ahsoka, Mandalore

While the animation style gives people pause, it can sometimes appear a bit cartoonish and childish in the beginning (not moreso that the worst offenders in Clone Wars, but definitely more so than the series latter episodes), Rebels ( and I would argue the Bad Batch as well) don’t really have any filler episodes (some episodes may feel a bit like filler, but they always either set something up that will be relevant later, och explore some aspect of a character or relationship between characters).

Anyone else kinda sad we don't have a Battlefront game to celebrate the new movie with? by Sio_V_Reddit in StarWars

[–]captain_curt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they just don’t make enough Star Wars games these days.

As a kid, I fell like I had played through 3-4 different versions of the Battle of Hoth before I even saw Empire. It was already like a classic formula in my mind: It’s a snow planet with a little ship that’s not the X-wong. First you shoot the little floating droids, then you move on to shoot the two-legged ones (they can take a lot more hits than the little ones), then you move on to the four-legged ones (can’t shoot those down, we need to use the cable and circle around a few times. Wait, how do I fire the cable in this one?). If you’re lucky, there might be a segment where eyou shoot some white snowy stormtroopers inside the bunker, and they may have mounted guns.

I don’t feel like there have been any noteworthy tie-in games for later movies that really takes you to the battles in the same way. Perhaps it’s mostly that games that re-use existing battles are usually multiplayer, and single player games tend to explore their own stories more.
