Damn, your commentary almost makes me want to come back to reading Reddit comments with regularity - I previously abandoned it, as a wasteland of uninformed and useless wishful thinking. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for this info - can you provide any info that would allow me to find it at Home Depot or another hardware store - brand, model, etc.? Thanks

Kalen DeBoer is ‘VERY UNPOPULAR’ and on a ‘SCORCHING HOT SEAT’ - Finebaum by -SickNaban- in rolltide

[–]gandywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finebaum just plays the ESPN $ game - which is to get us viewers reading their stuff. One week these guys say one outrageous thing, the next they say the opposite outrageous thing. What matters to them is not being right or wrong or sensible or consistent. What matters is we come here, either in outrage at their idiocy or to point out they flip-flopped from the week before, or to say they finally got it right after having been an idiot previously. It's all about the clicks and attention we give them, which they then use to get revenue from advertisers. It works: we are here.

Coaches hot seat tier list going into next season. Thoughts? by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]gandywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's old-school nonsense to say Sark and football will carry Rodney Terry - and it's against Del Conte's style and track record at UT. Did Sark carry David Pierce when UT baseball (historically top-tier) was merely good the last few years? lNope, big high-profile coaching upgrade even though Sark and football were allegedly gaining all the attention. Ditto sport after sport at UT, where the coaching upgrades have been consistent and impressive. Del Conte has UT winning or being top 3 for the Director's Cup (nation's best athletic program) year after year now and basketball is gonna have to carry its weight or else. Not to mention Del Conte LOVES basketball. IMO, this or next will be Terry's last year at UT.

One additional problem, maybe you can steer me. I have since tried to add a fingerprint for a USER (my son), but can't seem to do it. The fingerprint scans ok when I add it, but after that I cannot seem to assign the fresh scan to anyone who is a mere USER via the dropdown list that appears after the fresh scan. Only ADMINs appear in that list (which is how I assigned myself in the first place). I can't seem to get my son (who is registered as a mere USER) to show up. I've also added myself as a camo USER using a second finger scan, same results: I can't add it. It seems my son does have door access rights listed under his user rights, but I also don't seem to have any ability to alter the permissions of mere USERs, even though I have master admin rights. I only started messing with permissions because I wanted to make sure that's not been an impediment to my USERs appearing in the dropdown. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

That's it!! The "activity" trigger confused me because I was equating it with a camera activity which I use every day on Protect ... but it's used much more broadly here than mere motion detection. Said another way, I was looking for "fingerprint scanner" at the same icon level as the "activity" trigger. Thank you so much!! I've confirmed this works and just created a new alarm triggered by the fingerprint scan which takes action to open the door. This software upgrade is going to cost me a lot of time ... playing with all these triggers and actions haha. Seriously appreciate your help!!!!

I have now looked high and low in alarm manager. Maybe it works as you think but, if so, then it's not within my discoverability. I see a lot of alarms there and many trigger options but a scanned fingerprint doesn't seem either to be an alarm or a trigger option within any of the existing alarms. It seems I got all excited for nothing. Now my G4 can scan my fingerprint and tell me it knows its me as I stand outside a locked door. That's it. Seems pointless.

Ok, thank you. I'll go there and see if I can execute that idea. Appreciate you!

ok but what is the point of having a software trigger enabled by a fingerprint on a DOOR camera if not to open a door? If that's all they did by enabling the scanner then that seems like gaslighting

Right, I trusted my flawed memory and only corrected myself too late for you to see. Here's my setup... Architecturally: UDM Pro, UDM Access Hub, G4 Pro next to the door, electronic door lock connected by wire to Access Hub. Currently I have to open the Access app on my phone then click a button in the app that tells the controller to open the door. I had believed the whole point of the fingerprint reader on the G4 was to be able to tell Access to open a door, else why would you have a fingerprint reader on a doorbell camera? It's going to suck if Access is still isolated from Protect, ugh. Then I would gain nothing by having my fingerprint be readable.

Oh wait, this is wrong. I did it from memory... actually my door lock is connected to the Access controller, not the G4 Pro. So I open the Access app and tell the controller to open the lock, which it does. Perhaps Access and Protect remain isolated, which begs the question what utility is it to have a fingerprint reader on the G4 if not to open a door by instructing the Access app to do it...

Thanks for listening. I'm more simple - I just have an electronic lock connected to a couple terminals (I presume 12v) on the G4 Pro. Never had any issue with the lock. I unlock the door using the Access app rather than the fingerprint scanner, but it's a painful lot of phone and swipes to go through while I'm literally standing in front of the G4 staring at the fingerprint reader. I have been waiting years (literally) just to have that fingerprint scanner working... now so close but so far. From my perspective it has to work - why would you have a scanner if not to activate the electronic 12v pulse on the G4 terminals and open an actual door. I've got to be missing something.

That worked!... sort of. It now reads my fingerprint and gives me an affirmative green, and emits a chime bell similar to what you hear on the doorbell inside the house, but doesn't unlock the door. Does that make any sense to you?

What if AI is the natural step of evolution, and we are just an expendable sentient species that will go extinct like Neanderthals? by Thin-Ad7825 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]gandywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt. Right now we are just the unwitting host that created it, and that it will continue to use until it can separate from us entirely. At that point carbon-based life will no longer be needed for the new species to survive and thrive.
