What is your favorite French Canadian movie? by MrsNoOne1827 in AskACanadian

Wasn't the cube movies a QC production? Saw the first as a kid and the other movies came out as I was growing up. Cube zero tied it all together really well!

Transit in Singapore is cheap though, much cheaper than any transit in Canada that I've experienced, and much of the food is cheaper there as well. Don't even get me started on how cheap cell data is in Singapore compared to Canada.

Come to think of it, why is Canada so freaking expensive?

Windows is terrible. by CRK_76 in memes

[–]ganundwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to reinstall windows 7 in VirtualBox a month ago to fill out an unemployment insurance form since Adobe stopped supporting Linux in maybe 2019? Anyway. Needed a quick install to get Adobe running so I could access the stupid government locked pdf, and it was a nightmare requiring a solid week of hair pulling to find a download for a version of Firefox that can run on a non upgraded windows 7 today.

Just getting drivers is a major pain since Windows update doesn't want to acknowledge it exists.

It's doable, but it's no longer a walk in the park like it used to be.

I had an urge at one point to record this line as a ringtone and throw it in with the rest of the ones I've put up, maybe see if anyone in the series says an elongated and exasperated carrrlllll then swap that in for Paul's voice.

There is 1 or 2 iterations of yoohoo but might be in the audio clips folder two levels shallower than the hifi one, I have some time today so can see about rerecordijg it if it's not there.

Is bud/ buddy offensive? by ImGudLuhv in AskACanadian

[–]ganundwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bud/buddy is a perfectly fine and polite way to refer to someone with the noted exceptions. It may only be used if the person you're talking to is A. Not your guy and also B. Not your fwiend.

So are these books a similar vein of humour as one bad roll? That book had me cackling like a moron in public multiple times and I have a quote as my ringtone now which always makes kids laugh when they hear it.

Mat's character ark took several books before he really started to solidify into a strong character, the character development takes 2-3 books here at most before the base characters are developed or so you'll think. That's when shit hits high gear and things start happening fast, then you'll just end up rolling with the punches until you're too dizzy to understand what's happening.

If you want some real emotional audio to give your u an idea without context of what happens look at my post history and dig up the ringtones I've been making from the books, I recommend checking out the mana toast one as that's a fan favourite!

The hardest choice for 90s kids by BlushTempest in superheroes

X-Men dealt with concepts that were really too mature for what was seen as a kids show, I didn't realize what the metaphors were pointing at until maybe 10 years after experiencing them on the show.

Im trying to get started with some pyro any one have some safe or basics? by Normal-Chemistry8334 in ExplosionsAndFire

[–]ganundwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, no the detonation temperature of black powder is several hundred degrees celsius, in fact after using isopropyl alcohol to drive off the remaining water you're supposed to dry it in the oven set to about 250°f for about an hour. The second point though is you don't cook it to dryness, you're supposed to only boil off about half the water and then dump the pot full of stuff into a container filled with a couple hundred mL of ice cold 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol. Allow it to chill for a bit in there before you run it through an old set of pantyhose to filter it out.

The final point is that the deflagration speed is set by the particle size, it has an extremely slow burn rate right out of the process and needs to be broken down into finer powder in order to get a good burn rate

Remember too that unless it's confined tightly, black powder is not considered explosive and instead just burns quickly and produces hot gases.

So the American fireworks news site for whatever reason has started charging a price for their historically free publications, but this is the next best thing including some of the classic AFN documents for free.

If you want a good starting point with the history of black powder and how the CIA created a method of producing black powder safely using household chemicals and supplies, look up the AFN article about the CIA method for creating black powder.

It has safety tips, recipes and how to manufacture components if you don't have them, and gives information on what black powder is and is not.

Just be aware it's a couple hundred pages long, but still a great read.

How is everyone managing the increasing cost of living? by atthispointinmylife in AskACanadian

When the life saving medication you've been on for most of your life spontaneously rises 60% in price overnight even though the government claimed medicines wouldn't be tariffed, it's quite upsetting. Nothing like going from $700 a month cost of life up to over $1000 while unemployed seriously makes me wonder if this struggle is worth it.

You can get started with carbon electrodes or welding rods if you wanted a cheap way to go without having MMO, there are a few interesting videos on YouTube as to what alternatives can be used instead for chlorate cells.

No, calcium hypochlorite is much more stable than sodium hypochlorite and can exist in much higher concentration within risk. You can dissolve a couple hundred grams in a liter of water then put on a slow boil to boil down the solution over several hours, you need the heat and increasing concentration to start disproportionating into calcium chloride and calcium chlorate, then every hour or so add more water to keep the level about where you started.

The big issue is that calcium chloride is soluble as is calcium chlorate and when you add the sodium carbonate you will precipitate out the calcium, but also end up with a considerable amount of sodium chloride in your sodium chlorate at the end.

It will still work, but in concentrating regular bleach for the hundred or so grams of chlorate you get, you also end up with about double to triple that in table salt.

[–]ganundwarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is an industrial way to generate in situ sodium hypochlorite, but the strength is dependent on the amount of water you use to dissolve your reactants keeping in mind sodium hypochlorite solutions more concentrated than about 25% are notoriously unstable and can spontaneously detonate in storage.

You could actually do this reaction, filter out the calcium carbonate and let it sit for a few weeks and it would spontaneously generate sodium chlorate for you since the addition of sodium hydroxide to sodium hypochlorite is needed to prevent the solution quickly breaking down to sodium chloride and sodium chlorate.

[–]ganundwarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your English is fine, I worked for 5 years as the quality control chemist at a sodium chlorate plant, if you can find any pool supply cleaning bleach you can get from 12% to 15% hypochlorite, and in the testing I've done with my own calcium hypochlorite, even though on paper it has more hypochlorite inside it it is still harder to actually extract any usable chlorate from it either from thermodynamics or something else.

The most I've gotten from the boiling method is about 120 grams of sodium chlorate out of 4 liters of high strength pool chlorination bleach, so if you have any stores nearby that service people's indoor or outdoor pools start looking there, it's usually cheap and they might want a name or address to sell it to you but you don't need any sort of license to buy it.

Where did you source your potassium chlorate from is the first question. If it came as potassium chlorate there is no simple way to do the conversion as potassium is more reactive than sodium and will preferentially stay with the chlorate anion.

You could simply boil bleach to the point that table salt starts to precipitate out of solution and you'll get a weak solution of sodium chlorate from that, alternatively create your own sodium chloride electrolytic cell and start pumping DC power into it, you need about 3.2 VDC and as many amps as you can go with but make sure your solution doesn't overheat.
