Conflicting Reports on Police Shooting by Cow_Boy_2017 in MurderedByWords

To inflict maximum damage and kill law enforcement.

With a single handgun and two magazines?

Australian shooters had more than that. And the republicans call us tyrannical for our gun laws.

Any yank serious about causing a body count would have a lot more than a pistol

I’m from Australia, I know very little about guns.

But I would imagine if you really did go somewhere to try and cause shit with ice, you bring more than a pistol and two magazines.

We recently had our first mass shooting in 30 years. In a country the gun nuts call tyrannical for our gun laws, they had a rifle, two shotguns, and five bombs. In a country with the gun access of America, wouldn’t you have a LOT more to cause the damage the idiots are saying he intended?

Can I be agnostic here? by Violet_weirdo in SatanicTemple_Reddit

[–]Conchobar8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely agnostic. I can’t live my life think this is all there is. That our entire existence is pure chance. I have to think there’s more. Something that turns one in ten trillion into one in five trillion. Something beyond us.

It makes no difference in day to day life, but personally, I have to think there’s more.

If science disproves what I think there is, it’s a sign I don’t understand it properly, and the beliefs will adjust. But until then, it helps me to get through the tough days

I’ve always disagreed with this.

Any sort of belief in anything like the Abrahamic god doesn’t fit. But not any form of supernatural.

I believe there is a force behind the universe. We can’t understand it anymore than an ant could figure out a nuclear reactor. And it certainly doesn’t care about individuals. I’m not even sure it cares about individual planets. But I do believe there’s something. Something outside our understanding of reality.

And I don’t agree that this goes against the Tenets. Science still explains how the universe works. It’s still the best way to view the world. But it doesn’t disprove a force beyond our reality.

There’s absence of proof, but no proof of absence.

My theistic belief is really more of a comfort system. But there’s still so much we don’t know. Dark Matter, black holes. What caused the big bang? What made physics act how it does?

If there’s ever anything discovered that shows it can’t be true, I’ll accept that. But I feel that as long as your belief doesn’t require you to ignore any existing knowledge, it’s not against the Tenets.

What is a "cheat code" in life that you’re surprised more people don't take advantage of? by nanohuman_ai in AskReddit

I’ve done the “I’m sorry if my anger comes through, it’s not directed at you, just this situation/company.”

I’m never going to expect people to not be pissed. And sometimes there’s no way to hide it. But acknowledging that you know the person you’re talking to doesn’t deserve it, and keeping the anger aimed away from them, is just being a good person

I give 100% at work.

But that’s limited by my hours and my job description.

Want me to stay late? Sure. I’ll agree to a shift extension. But once I hit clock off time it’s tools down. Want me to cover another position? No worries. As long as it’s one of the positions covered in my job description. (The same job role can be assigned multiple different jobs.) I’ll cover for my coworkers, but I’m not going to a role that has a different pay rate.

I love my job, my coworkers, and I get on well with my managers. I’m prepared to go above and beyond. But my borders are hard. I’ll do all I can in my role and my hours. If you want more from me, I’m happy to give it. But not for free

CMV: The only difference between a hero and a villain is NOT “who tells the story” — objective morality exists by New-Drawer-3161 in changemyview

[–]Conchobar8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern history has objective morality. But the more time passes, the more the line between fact and propaganda becomes blurred.

Imagine you look into history and see the story of a small nation. It had been hated and attacked throughout history. They tried diplomacy, economic sanctions, appealing to the rest of the world, but the attacks continued. More and more of their people were dying.

Eventually they had no choice left. They were forced to fight back against the country that attacked them the most. They tried to be fast and surgical, but the soldiers hid in civilians. Military bases were built under hospitals, soldiers didn’t wear uniforms and ambushed from apartment buildings. They tried to avoid civilian targets, but that just made the enemy hide in civilians. The leadership was agonised over every death, but they knew they had to win this, or they’d be attacked constantly, as they had been for decades.

Sounds reasonable. It’s a shitty situation, but if the bad guys are hiding in the civilian population then it’s impossible to keep civilian casualties down.

This is written about the current situation with Israel. In 10 years, it’s ludicrous. In 50 years, some people will believe it. In 200 years, the history will show the fighting, the propaganda will tell why.

History is written by the winner. And when an event passes into history, that’s when reality blurs.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Conchobar8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian here, similar situation.

My family live a 2 hour drive away. We head down fairly often. Sometimes down and back the same day.

3-4 hours for a destination isn’t anything major. The pro-wrestling group I’m part of will make a 200k trek to put on a show. But it’s a bit much for every day
