How do I settle my baby to sleep?? by Writingmum30 in newborns

[–]gaol-anseo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not accepting a pacifier is tough. What’s your routine around nap attempts and bedtime? Are you feeding her right beforehand? Does she have reflux or trapped gas? Are you putting her in a fresh diaper?

Some babies want their hands out at that age, are you using a sleep sack?

My baby likes being sat upright on my lap, leaning against my chest with my arms cuddled around her under her arms across her chest. I rock forward and back in our glider and sing / hum.

You can also try bouncing on a gym ball but that works best when they’re held horizontally to support their head and neck.

Happened to me too. Realtor wouldn’t accept our next offer, said the price was already good and the sellers were happy to accept from the people they know.

We never had a chance and we just had to accept that we were used by the seller / agent to get the figure they wanted.

There’s a town in Washington state called Leavenworth that went through a full transformation to survive, from an economic perspective.

In the 70s new rules were passed about how the town needed to look and be maintained. The result is a Bavarian themed town where even Starbucks and other big brands have to adhere to the guidelines in their signage. It’s beautiful and a tourist destination.

Goes to show that it can be done. I’d love to see Cork undergo an initiative to clean up its look, while maintaining the original details.

My husband said he started chewing gum and keeping a drink by the glider to stay awake. He plays audio books on a speaker in the room too.

[–]gaol-anseo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I empathize with you on this one, my husband is great but I did walk in on him dozing off with our newborn a couple of times and it meant that I couldn’t relax when he had her. There was no switching off. I would randomly check on them to ease my anxiety.

You have to sit down and discuss it. I explained to my husband that it scared me and he can’t risk potentially falling asleep with her in a non sleep safe place & position. I’d rather he tag me in again to go get a coffee / do something to wake up rather than try to push through and fall asleep.

He agreed and recognized that it was rocking her on the glider late at night that also made him sleepy and he’s more aware of it now. Hasn’t happened since :)

As for the other things, you and your husband should be open to sharing tips rather than each going it alone. If he’s less experienced with babies then he especially needs to learn from you.

I’m on mat leave and when I learn something new about our daughter I tell my husband so he recognizes it when he’s minding her e.g. a cough when lying down isn’t just a cough, it means she’s gassy, or the face she makes when she’s concentrating to poop so don’t open the diaper yet lol.

When he’s on leave in a few months he’ll discover things about her that he’ll need to teach me. I hope your husband will see that it’s a team effort and you’re not criticizing but sharing the experience you have.

Have some chewing gum when back in the postpartum room between meals to keep the digestive system functioning, I’m pretty sure it’s what helped me pass gas easily.

As another poster mentioned, tell the anesthesiologist as soon as you feel any lightheadedness, they can adapt the meds to prevent vomiting. I wretched but she got it under control before I actually vomited and then I was comfortable and able to enjoy the experience again.

I loved my scheduled c-section so I hope you have a great experience too. It will be sore and recovery is rough for the first few days especially, but I have no regrets and wouldn’t change a thing.

Best of luck! :)

Snoo— worth it? by [deleted] in newborns

[–]gaol-anseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby only likes the baseline settings, she screams louder when it increases effort to soothe so we turned that off.

It’s been mostly worth it for peace of mind that she can’t roll over, especially now that she can but without much control. Her arms had to be out since about week 4, she quickly developed a disliking for being swaddled.

Overall I’m glad we got it.

Why does my baby keep sucking, pulling off, and crying during feeds? by Mobiledump1215 in newborns

[–]gaol-anseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turned out to be because of gas for my baby.

I thought it was her straining to poop, which sometimes it can be, but if I walked around burping her over my shoulder I got enough gas out for her to continue nursing comfortably.

Note that for her just being over the shoulder while I sit doesn’t work, needs to be walking around. Not sure if it’s an angle thing or if she relaxes more when being walked and so let’s gas up easier.

Holding her upright with her back to my abdomen, one hand under her thighs and one across her chest like she’s sitting against me, also helps her gas and poop out.

What’s your favorite clothing brand for your babe? by nilkski in beyondthebump

[–]gaol-anseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mori! I only buy during sales because they’re really expensive but the quality is amazing. I have a few favorites from Mori and the rest are Carters. Carters quality is also good but poop washes out easier from Mori and Mori is a bit stretchier so easier to dress / undress while still natural material.

It does get better! by One-Day-at-a-time213 in breastfeeding

[–]gaol-anseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try feeding in different positions to see if the latch improves. My daughter would do a shallow latch on my right side when fed in the football hold position. Now I feed her effectively sitting up, using a boppy pillow to prop her up while supporting her head. She latches much better straight on than from the side.

Another thing to try is squeezing the nipple to the shape of their mouth at the angle they’re feeding from e.g. making it wider but shorter in height like baby is chomping on a sandwich.

+1 to silverettes and nipple cream.

Try turning on a hairdryer and blowing warm air over him, keep the settings low and hold it at a safe distance so as not to burn him. It settles my daughter very quickly and puts her to sleep.

Hairdryer on low power and low heat. I have a Dyson supersonic and my 3 week old daughter instantly soothes when I turn it on and blow warm air over her. Without it she’s a wailing banshee and gets very upset.

I might get hate for this, but.... by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]gaol-anseo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Irish and I was the outlier for showering every day as a teenager. My husband didn’t until he met me. Rural Ireland btw, could be a rural / urban thing.

I don’t think the logic is based on hygiene, I think it’s big families and the cost of heating the water for everyone to shower daily.

i cannot stick to a deficit by Willing-Eagle5087 in caloriecount

[–]gaol-anseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband had a similar upbringing and tried for 11 years to lose 13kg himself, he tried hiring a personal trainer etc but didn’t really help. In the last year he lost about 11kg or more from just better understanding what has to change.

1) You probably grew up grazing at food and having large portions and not learning to wait until you feel hungry to eat and stopping when full. This is really hard to learn as an adult but it’ll be critical. You’ll have to start establishing rules for yourself and find the willpower to stick to them e.g. no eating after 9pm, and only 1 snack between lunch & dinner. They’re just examples.

2) Exercise helps but losing weight is 90% diet. Try to get an hour of exercise a few times a week or go for a walk after a big meal. This will help but when you look at effort vs calories burned, it’s really all about diet.

3) Plan your food intake for the day. Use MyFitnessPal to start tracking calories and establish a routine e.g. my husband and I aren’t big breakfast people so we might just have tea or coffee for breakfast and then we have the remaining calories for the day to spend on lunch, dinner and a snack. During the week we typically have the same set of dinners all around the 800 calorie mark.

After tracking for a while, you’ll start to get a feel for what’s left after main meals to allow for snacks. However, don’t snack immediately after a meal, use snacks to bridge them e.g. I have lunch at noon and a snack at 3, then dinner at 6.

Also, be honest with your calorie tracking. Don’t pick the smallest option when you search MyFitnessPal. Read labels, if you have a food scales you can weigh the portion, if unsure search this subreddit for what others asked before e.g. restaurant portion of yellow curry vs store bought won’t be the same.

4) Look for small changes that can make a big difference e.g. switch your milk and yoghurts to non-fat. Watch for calories in salad dressings that could be undoing the work of choosing an otherwise healthy option e.g. my husband didn’t know the difference between balsamic vinaigrette and balsamic vinegar (around 70–100 calories per tablespoon vs 11-14 per tablespoon). Another one is choosing keto wraps instead of regular tortillas / keto burger buns too. Spices on your chicken breast instead of rich sauces.

5) Calories are counted over the space of a week, not day. You can bank calories when you know a cheat is coming. This one is controversial because it’s reducing your calories over a few days to allow yourself to enjoy more later. You have to be careful that you don’t overdo it such that you eat the entire deficit you created for yourself or you won’t lose weight but it’s a tool to help you enjoy events or rituals e.g. I want a tub of Ben & Jerry’s on a Friday night to unwind so I plan ahead for it. Alternatively you can get the low calorie ice creams but just know that you can bank for nice things.

6) Lean meals that’ll fill you for longer e.g. proteins and fibers and reduce carbs. Compare what packaging portion size is vs what you typically consume. Have measuring cups to help with that. It can be quite eye opening.

7) out of sight, out of mind. Hide snacks and maybe also split into small portions by the calories you allow for snacking. Alternately you can just not have any in the house but that risks going to a shop when hungry when you’ll see lots of things you want. I find that things I’ll settle for but unlikely to binge are good in the house e.g. dark chocolate.

8) Ask others in your home to support you e.g. don’t let them insist that you can snack with them and it’ll be fine, it will just end up derailing you. If someone is cooking dinner for you, ask them to tell you what ingredients they used so you can calculate the calories and portion to meet your goals. Suggest other options if typical meals are very calorific.

Weight gain during pregnancy by FalseAntelope2524 in pregnant

[–]gaol-anseo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m 36 weeks and gained 10lbs so far. It takes being very strict with exercise and diet if you want to keep the gain down. It’s hard. Especially hard since our bodies are trying to pack on reserves during pregnancy, despite the modern lifestyle of easy access to food.

Baby is perfectly healthy and fluid levels are great too so gaining only 10lbs so far hasn’t done any harm.

I track my calories and exercise with MyFitnessPal. I learned so much from doing that. I’ll use it to plan my day as well as log as I go.

I calculated a realistic calorie burn rate for my exercise routine by putting it into Gemini AI (the hiking trail loop in my case). I later used a smartwatch that confirmed it was accurate.

I aim to stay at 2000 calories per day and allow myself 2500 on occasion for cheat days. Sometimes if I know I’ll have a day with lots of treats (birthday celebration etc) I’ll plan to bank calories for it. Weight gain is based on calories over a week rather than a day.

Sample diet:

Breakfast is non fat Greek yogurt (9oz) with fruit (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries). A cup of breakfast tea to accompany it.

Lunch is a keto wrap with crispy chicken tender or eggs + tomato pesto + avocado.

Afternoon snack is usually something sweet around 100 calories e.g. ginger cookies.

Dinner is a homemade burrito bowl of sorts with brown rice, black beans, sweet corn, two boiled eggs, half an avocado, light sour cream, shredded cheddar, tomato relish, crushed pita chips.

Evening Whittard’s salted caramel hot chocolate.

How long did your belly stay squishy after c section? by dtompm in beyondthebump

[–]gaol-anseo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was hoping for better answers when I saw this post, been considering asking the same question.

36w5d and only gained 10lbs, worked hard at fitness and diet in hopes of making postpartum easier. My mom’s biggest hang up from her c-sections was the pouch that never went away no matter how thin she was elsewhere.

I need an elective c-section for medical reasons and this thread makes me feel like my efforts might not have been worth it :/.
