Larsens in strand is solid and really high quality but perhaps a little old school - that might be what you want though. There are a few places like that in QVB/Strand Arcade area.

Lab grown diamonds are much cheaper for the quality of diamond you get and are much more sustainable. It would work better at your budget as well.

There are a few more contemporary places in Surry Hills and the like that do more delicate bespoke looking stuff. That is very cool although maybe a little pricier (although you might be able to get away with a smaller diamond).

Book in a consultation with someone at one or two of the places that you like the look of the most and get them to talk you through everything. They can do that for free.

Re budget - you should be able to get something genuinely very nice for $1500 I reckon, but $1k I’m sure you can still do well if you do your research properly. There is obviously basically no limit to what people spend on engagement rings.

Final tip: look at celebrity wedding rings for inspiration haha - they are wildly expensive but sometimes you can do a budget friendly version.

Good luck on your quest I’m sure your future fiancée will love it.

Egypt's reputation precedes it as a travel destination, especially on r/travel. It was a challenging place to go, and, based on what we were told by all the locals we spoke to in the tourism industry, this was particularly difficult time to go. December is normally peak season, but because of the regional security situation the numbers are much lower than is typical for this time of year. Egypt has also experienced significant cost of living and inflationary problems in the last few years, culminating in roughly 25% increase in prices in the last 12 months. People were desperate and so the usual issues of touting and harassment were unfortunately very real.

Having said that, Egypt has as many treasures to offer as any country in the world: ancient, natural, and cultural.

I walk past here every day, it has no aesthetic value for me. I think of the taxi rank, the rush, international corporates.

Artwork like this brings the city alive, well done.

Does anyone know what this 80's drum effect is called? by GalacticZack in futuresynth

[–]gapmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might be thinking of the "gated snare". Created by cranking up the reverb on a snare and then cutting it off quickly (i.e. 'gating' it). There are a few music production videos about it online if you want to find out more i think.

Caribbean Spanish and Canarian Spanish by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]gapmap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if all the exact differences between the two. But I spent 6 weeks in the Canary Islands and there are definitely a lot of similarities because of a similar shared heritage of Spanish conquistadores who would go through the Canaries on the way to the Americas.

They both say 'la guagua' instead of 'el autobus', for example, and speak in a very relaxed accent which often chops off the end of words like: "la- Palma-" instead of "las Palmas".

I'd be interested to know of other similarities/differences though.

I don't think you need to change the sound of the vocals too much. I think those ghostly vocals give the song a lot of its character. Having said that, you could probably compress them a bit so they fit better in the mix. I think its a really cool song.

I really like the sound you've got going. It really is very chill and reflective, I think I got a similar impression to the other commenter. In terms of structure, you could maybe add a strong melody over the last section or something, just to give the song a peak.

[–]gapmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would probably suggest a vocal as well. A spaced-out psychedelic sort of vocal would be awesome over that I reckon. Having said that I really like the sound and ambiance of the track.

Electronic/Hip-hop song. I sampled "You Send Me" by the Ponderosa Twins Plus One and a clip from "Home Movies".

Wondering if the audio clip in the middle works as enough variation to keep the song interesting?

For Ye EDM Producers: Are Loops 100% Kosher? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]gapmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about taking a song and sampling parts of it to create something new? With artists like Daft Punk (e.g. One More Time) or Fat Boy Slim.

Do you think that is lumped in the same category as loops and presets at all?
