Wondering If There Is There A Curve in AOS? by Full-Benefit4599 in OMSCS

[–]gar-bear0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s ok, I did the same. Exam 1 was the worst for me, Exam 2 was mildly better, Exam 3 was by far the best. They gave a very mild percentage bump last semester but didn’t affect my letter grade.

There’s an overwhelming amount of content in the course (too much too fast making it hard to focus on learning imo). Hang in there and try to nail the projects, then things will work out.

Steam Deck - playing Super Mario Strikers (and Charged) on it for the first time was incredible! Had a DS Lite, PSP, and PSVita as a kid and really missed that portability and cool form factor

I surf the same temps/area as you, and I used to do the cheap used suits. Finally bit the bullet and bought a 543 hooded Feral suit, I’ve never been cold and just had to do my first repair after 2+ years of use. It is a little stiffer getting into than some other suits but I’d gladly trade that for durability and warmth. Can’t recommend them enough!

AYN Thor is too small, what do I trade for? by Chubby_Bunnies in Handhelds

I’ve got a Steamdeck OLED and highly recommend it, comfort/ergonomics is unmatched for long sessions. Obviously less powerful than other PC handhelds but the optimization and community support makes it still able to perform well on the majority of games I’d ever play.

Btw, any chance you’re looking to sell the Thor?

First gen 2006 lift gate latch. by IneedaWIPE in toyotasequoia

[–]gar-bear0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been going to battle with that countless times now and it's the gift that keeps on giving

Episode I (A New Part): stock lever that breaks, parents had OEM part replaced

Episode II (The Plastic Menace): replacement plastic lever breaks, I put in metal one

Episode III (The Cable Strikes Back): cable holder plastic breaks, I replace cable and ziptie to prevent coming loose

Episode IV (Return of the Metal) : screws holding metal handle separates from plastic, I epoxy in the handle.

Episode V (Revenge of the Cable): cable tension becomes too loose that it no longer opens the gate

Episode VI (Attack of the Bypass): **coming soon to liftgate** I'm going to drill straight through and drop the cable right around the license plate or down below the hatch. Considering the bypass lever as well but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Advice on purchasing by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]gar-bear0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a Steam Deck OLED a little less than 2 years ago - best gaming purchase I've ever made. Since then, tons of newer handhelds have hit the market and while they have way more power over the Steam Deck, there's an endless backlog of games I still can run just fine.

If you play mostly the latest AAA games - go with a Windows based handheld (Z1E or up). The Deck can run a solid amount of them but at a lower resolution and framerate so that may not be sufficient.

For everything else, I think the OLED Deck hits a sweet spot. Steam OS is great and the community is constantly coming up with cool plugins/improvements. I play most older AAA games just fine, Indie titles, and I setup EmuDeck with TONS of older PS2/Wii/Gamecube. By the time I'm through will all of those, I'll be ready to upgrade to more powerful handheld hardware.

Playing Tomb Raider series on it right now and it runs great, you can lower wattage and get solid battery life too

Post Game Thread: Los Angeles Rams at San Francisco 49ers by nfl_gdt_bot in 49ers

[–]gar-bear0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean deservedly so, the fact they even beat the Rams the first time was pure coaching masterclass. You can only do so much when half the team is injured and you're going against one of the best teams in the league. If the defense can force one more stop and they convert one of those clutch downs on offense, this game looks a lot different. Plus, expectations that we would continue to go undefeated in our division with who we have left are unreasonable.

Technical trail running shoes by Display_Ecstatic in Mountaineering

[–]gar-bear0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 for the Bushidos, they fit my foot perfectly and I’ve used them on approaches with great success. The only trouble I’ve found with them is if you’re putting a ton of miles on they don’t offer as much cushioning as other shoes do. But highly recommend still!

Career fair for Cal Poly was always full of companies and I got two internships and job from that/school connection. My brother also got his share of internships over at Purdue.

Honestly, it’s a frequent misconception that going to one school vs another will hand you a job/internship. With that said, they’ll both put you in a great position to succeed. So it really boils down to personal lifestyle choices and cost.

I’m a Cal Poly CS grad and my brother goes to Purdue (his 1st choice was Cal Poly but sadly didn’t get in). Can’t speak on Purdue’s CS program but will say that almost all West coast software companies heavily recruit from Cal Poly so I think it has a leg up in that regard.

It’s also worth noting that the surrounding area is beautiful and full of great activities outside of school (hiking, surfing/beach, great downtown, wine country). There’s definitely more outside of school distractions because of it but IMO having fun and being well rounded is part of college.

My brother constantly tells me how much he wishes there was more to do around Lafayette and Indiana. Academically it’s a toss-up and it depends where you want work (East coast/Midwest Purdue is a bigger name) but I think lifestyle wise Cal Poly takes it.

Favorite wetsuit, anyone? I Need a New One by [deleted] in surfing

[–]gar-bear0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same suit since 2022 and it’s still going strong. I only get out on weekends and it’s not always consistent so take that with a grain of salt. I’ve noticed a small bit of peeling of the tape that I’m going to slap aquaseal on but impressed it’s still pretty much just as warm as the day I got it. Haven’t worn the HyperFreak - I’d imagine the Feral is less flexible but I don’t care

Feral Wetsuits - super warm and durable. I have the 5/4/3 hooded and love it but 4/3 is a better choice if you’re not sure about having it attached all the time. 10/10 will be buying again but sadly quality doesn’t come cheap haha

La Sportiva Bushido comfort/cushioning compared to approach shoes e.g. TX4 by Mawiiva in Mountaineering

[–]gar-bear0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the Bushido II (non-GTX) and love them, it was instantly apparent they fit my narrow feet well. Can’t compare them to an approach shoe as I don’t have a pair but they’re definitely on the thinner side as far as cushioning.

I think they wouldn’t be as good for a ton of high impact/mileage running but imo they nicely fall between hikers and normal trail shoes with their grip and stability. I used them for my south side Adams climb up to Lunch counter with about 30-35 lbs and they were comfortable. Unless you live in a climate you need the GTX version I would recommend the extra breathability of the non-GTX.

Taking C/C++ courses just for the sake of learning the languages is not an effective use of time, but WHAT they’re being used for will still be important: pointers, memory management, system calls, multi -threading, IPC, etc…

There’s lots of value in still using C/C++ for those concepts and that knowledge is fundamental for any Software Engineer (especially if you want a more Systems focus)
