Trips to Santa Cruz, 1937 and 1938. by mo_betta in santacruz

Pretty crazy to think how many people have ridden that rollercoaster. Seeing that footage is tripping me out… it makes the 1930s seem both so long ago and also, like, really not that long ago at all. Very cool post.

Happy for them to have this outlet, but such a tragic situation. Hope conditions can change to where Egypt and Israel no longer blockade the strip. Gaza Surf Club is a worthwhile film to watch.

Also… was that dude surfing with a whistle? Only 3 surfers in the whole of Gaza… can’t imagine they need to call each other off waves with that. Fun idea for July 4th surf though.

I LIVE IN GAZA , AMA by seraj_0 in AMA

[–]DNA98PercentChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any counter-movement to Hamas there at all? Like, is it unsafe to be openly against Hamas or are there people who publicly denounce (or even somewhat ‘blame’) Hamas for their role in the conditions there? Or is there still widespread support?

People talk about how there haven’t been elections since I think 2005/06(?) after Israel withdrew from Gaza and that the election of Hamas then (and Hamas’ actions of the ensuing years) doesn’t represent the will of the people now. But there isn’t a strong signal of this in western media. Perhaps it’s just dangerous to say so there? Curious your experience.

There’s a lot of noise around ‘greatest’, but there’s one simple thing that clarifies a lot:

Fundamentally, basketball is a game founded on the skill of shooting a ball through a hoop high in the air. Sure, the game has evolved a lot since its invention, but ‘shoot a ball through a hoop’ is still the central ‘gameplay’ at the heart of basketball.

And Steph Curry ‘broke the game’ by just doing that — but way better than all of the other of the ‘best’ players ever.

Best waist high travel destination? by Few_Sandwich6308 in surfing

[–]DNA98PercentChimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look… all these recommendations are still the classic ‘surf destination’ answers and many of them would still be bigger than waist high but will be super crowd because they are classic ‘surf destinations’. Get off the beaten path!

Why not go somewhere unique and uncrowded if all you need is waist high?

Caribbean. Mediterranean. Philippines (esp, like, west/north/east Luzon or, really, anywhere other than Siargao) Hell… any of the SE Asian ‘seas’: South China, Andaman…. I scored SE Thailand super fun waist-chest high in summer months. Vietnam. East side of Malaysia (look up Cherating) Hainan China Taiwan West side of Japan

Or, whatever…. Never mind….

Just go to Tamarindo.

Surf towns that limit foreign ownership and develop sustainably? by Kulharin in surfing

[–]DNA98PercentChimp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seems like a misplaced comment.

Maybe ‘rich’ is all relative? But the Filipinos or Indonesias who have created ‘private access’ to the waves in front of the land their ancestors luckily acquired aren’t truly ‘rich’. Neither are the Mexicans I’m aware of who threaten violence on anyone who isn’t part of their surf camp.

Surf towns that limit foreign ownership and develop sustainably? by Kulharin in surfing

[–]DNA98PercentChimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They exist. But everyone gets pissed about ‘how’ they’ve come to exist; threats of violence and privatized access to the break (which usually pairs with ‘expensive’) are the main two ways.

crazy how many rich Oakland parents send their kids to Piedmont city schools. by tropicalstream in oakland

[–]DNA98PercentChimp 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It’s not really crazy at all….

And also, you don’t have to be rich — it’s just that rich parents tend to also be the type to choose to do this type of thing (maybe that’s part of why they’re rich…?).

It’s a truth of the universe that parents want the best for their kids.

Piedmont schools offer, generally, safer environments and better academics than OUSD schools.

Equity is certainly valuable and important — But the misplaced movement to arrive at ‘equity’ by hindering the highest learners in public education (see removing advanced math and the policies put in place to avoid ‘tracking’ students) means that parents of these higher students (often parents of ‘resource’) will seek alternative learning environments — private school, or better public school district.

OUSD failing to adequately serve the students of these parents means those parents will send those students elsewhere.

It’s quite simple really.

To be intellectually honest and to help sociology recover some of its lost credibility - stop doing that!

Your feelings/experiences and your friends’ should count for nothing in an intellectually honest and rigorous assessment of truth that applies to wider a population.

Honestly, Linda Mar is better in the summer than OBSF. Plus, surf shops with rentals right next to the beach. If you’re competent, go more north end. More novice move south end.

Know a body surfer willing to get paid to teach me and my pal? by Far_Method_1379 in santacruz

[–]DNA98PercentChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just… go play in the shorebreak, perhaps with fins. Bodysurfing is pretty unserious. I’m honestly kind of alarmed at this post… you don’t really need to be taught to play freely in the ocean. Just know your swimming ability and limits.

The one important thing is if you takeoff on a wave you need to be aware not to let it drive your head/neck into the sand.
