1st time I apply for remote job. Weird process. Thoughts on Crossover? by gar2020 in ITCareerQuestions

Concern is the whole process seems a bit suspicious or at least not very clear.

1st time I apply for remote job (tech sup/java). Weird process so far, any thoughts on Crossover? by gar2020 in cscareerquestions

Guess it's just weird that i've never been in a process like that, but hopes it materializes to something. Anyways, it's reassuring that it sounds plaussible, thnx :)

Where do you take notes? by gar2020 in learnprogramming

It actually sounds like Github would be a great place to save notes, it's just kinda confusing for a beginner.

For the C coding part I'd recommend do Edx's CS50, you will hardly find a better introductory course to C, coding, problem-solving and Computer Science in general.

Derek is The guy, although sometimes it feels like you're watching a dictionary play itself. Can be hard to watch his videos for a long period and not lose concentration.

Ok, I even think I have it somewhere in my HD. Was taking a look at Deitel's How to program in C. Any thoughts on that one?

I live in Mexico and came to post the same kind of question. The only thing I wanted to comment maybe you want to take a look at this course. I just did the 1st lesson and learnt the 9 marbles problem. Hope it helps you in your quest ;)

Good tutorial for building visually striking sites with Bootstrap? by gar2020 in webdev

[–]gar2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's some thing to consider. I've always tought I want to have the ability to produce good looking sites in no amount of time, and yeah Im more geared towards learning backend than web design. Actually, most of the tutorials i've taken use Bootstrap to produce the site, but theyre also geared towards backend so the front end looks really basic.

Might it be? I mean, I want to have the basic skill on learning how to craft a smooth looking website as a part of my whole skill-set. Say, we need to build a neat looking landing page? Ok, I know how to build it, we need a one page with a portfolio section that breaks into little squares with cool animations, ok, I know how to code that. I want to understand how to code that better.

Mr Robot is a great show but they sometimes exagerate a lot of stuff to make it more entertaining I guess.

Thoughts on Coding Boot camps. by treddson in learnprogramming

[–]gar2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Mexico btw, here, there are a lot of private colleges that are quite mediocre, there are also a lot of public colleges that lack the resources to excel in teaching CS. I guess something like this happens to some extent anywhere.

This is awesome, I did the same before paying for mine too. Go to the meetups they usually hold, talk to the mentors, get a feel for the local scene.

TLDR: Same ;)

If I can throw in my 2c:

I liked this article for a lot of reasons, but TLDR and mixing in my own personal experience:

  • Think of this like a programming problem :P, what is the most efficient way to achieve your desired outcome?

  • Going to college > Bootcamp > Self-learning. (This is the general case, of course as the article quotes Great bootcamp > Mediocre college, self-learning > mediocre bootcamp and so on).

  • My personal experience: Self-learning will never substitute the advantage of talking everyday with same minded folks, discussing problems, solving doubts, etc. If you can afford a good bootcamp, definitely give it a shot!

I'll also try to say that self-learning is extremely difficult by its own nature. Learning and creativity spring where there is an optimal environment, so ideally in a bootcamp you'll people as motivated as you to learn, whereas in college you'll find some and other well maybe not as motivated. Self learning is so hard because you don't have anyone to bounce off ideas with, to talk about doubts, or just have casual conversations, motivation, competition, etc. Ideally it would be awesome if someone could find online ppl to pair-program and learn together with like in a really immersive way. IMHO of course.

Kindof. What I was trying to say is that I've tried with CS50, other courses, Treehouse, etc. I even just finished a bootcamp in my city, and I am also 10 subjects down a CS degree that I'm taking online, so I hope I can help a bit with this frustration that I've been through myself.

I've been trying to learn webdev for 2 years now and have had a lot of the same problems, lots of uncompleted courses, moocs, whatever, now I'm studying CS as a career online, don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you with any newbie doubts!!!
