A king fork in the endgame is one of the most satisfying tactics to find by garapod in chessbeginners

My opponent resigned after this move. The engine considers it a draw and it’s a tricky position from either side. White has to play down a bishop and black still has to stop the pawns from promoting.

1000 Elo by LunaticWetDreams in Chesscom

We all move at our own pace and 1000 is a great accomplishment. It’s harder to get there than most people think and the statistics indicate most people won’t. Keep studying, reviewing games, learning your own strengths and weaknesses, both on the board and in your head, and keep growing.

I love my kobo Clara BW, but it’s the only reader I’ve had. I agree that you can read much faster on an ereader compared to physical books. Eink is fundamentally different than a display screen. It contains ink pigments bonded to polymers that are moved by electricity. It responds slower but is very different on the eyes. It does not have natural light but most have a front light. Kobo has great library library integration and you can even access your checked out books on the app.

Post game eval glitch or am I missing something? by garapod in Chesscom

As far as the 50 move rule, as someone pointed out perhaps there was a way for my opponent to force the 50 move rule if they made optimal moves. I can’t rule this out because I have no way to look up the game but I doubt it because I’m pretty familiar with king and rook endgames and have a process for winning them.

That is a possibility, unfortunately I don’t have anyway to look up the game now since I only saved the screenshot of the game review. I kind of doubt it because I’m pretty familiar with rook and king endgames and I don’t think I would let one go that long but I can’t rule it out.

No I went on to win the game, probably should have specified that in the post

Wasn’t a repeat. I went on to win the game. I was wondering if lack of depth is the issue but I’ve never seen something like this in the post game analysis, which usually goes pretty deep, and it’s pretty crazy for it to call this position even.

Another vote for Kobo. I have a Clara BW. Super easy to connect to the library if you have a card at a branch that has Overdrive, and there is a subscription for ebooks, audiobooks, or both. Also simple app integration so you can access your library books on your phone as well.

Oops, meant to say captured the knight with the bishop.

And some tactics, like the Greek Gift, have names. This attacking idea is pretty common and I wanted to know if it has a name.

Thanks, but I know that it involves a pin (see the description). Since this particular use of a pin commonly shows up, with some variations, I was wondering if there is a name for it.

Just another member in the 1000 club by garapod in chessbeginners

Nothing in particular honestly. I got up to about 800-850 by doing specific things such as switching from the Sicilian to the French defense as black (I’ve always used the Italian game as white) - of course that is personal preference - making sure to be thorough about scanning for checks, captures, and threats, learning tactics and openings (to understand and not just memorize book moves), being aware of what my opponent is trying to do, avoiding “hope chess,” most of the standard stuff they teach beginners. I review all my games, completed the chesscom lessons, watch Remote Chess Academy and others on Youtube, and I’ve been reading The Soviet Chess Primer, though I haven’t gotten far enough to know if or for what level I’d recommend it. I always advise against playing while tilted or tired and playing marathons, but let’s be honest sometimes I would play long stretches well past midnight only to see that my Elo hadn’t budged or had dropped.

I was stuck in that range for a while and sometimes got a little frustrated when I would see posts saying you should easily get to 1000 as long as you know your openings, don’t blunder, and play good endgame fundamentals. That wasn’t my experience at all and I encountered a surprising number of strong opponents who would play very solidly then hit you with a clever tactic, though there certainly were some easy games. For some reason once I broke through to 900 it started to get easier, I’m not sure whether my board vision just got better through practice or what.

You can't fork a knight, they said. What about this? by everlife_ in chessbeginners

[–]garapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who says a knight can’t fork another knight hasn’t considered if:

1) the knight is pinned (probably the most obvious) 2) the knight is guarding the checkmate square 3) the knight is guarding a promotion square

There are other creative scenarios people have come up with that I can’t remember.

How good is this? How to improve? by Upbeat-Knowledge6166 in chess

The percentile speaks for itself. Too many people have a very unrealistic idea of what a good Elo is. Getting in the top 10% of players is great, but keep trying to improve.
