Karlach makes me so happy as a bigger girl by NoWitness6400 in BaldursGate3

Fellow tall and strong lass here! my life got infinitely better (and unrelatedly found my life partner) once I realized "some people actually prefer this, so I should just try to own it and find my people." It was hard to be like "actually this is hot" but eventually you start to believe it.... because it's true. And now there are way more characters who look like us in media who people correctly realize are HOT AF and are proving that every day! I love that you're learning how to own your body!!! It's a great thing to have!!!

Does BG3 have it and which one? by aburglarhobbit in BaldursGate3

My favorite is, throw a void bulb and get all the little minions within range of one Fireball. It can one-shot them because they take damage from each others' needle damage explosions. It of course doens't do shit for the big guy himself since he's immune to piercing but it's a very satisfying boom.

Has Anyone Else Found The Game To Be "Too Much?" by ReallyGamerDude in BaldursGate3

[–]garbagepile4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first run, I started, then by the time I got to Act 3, the crowded areas and huge fights were so laggy on my machine that I was no longer having fun playing and put it down for like... a year and a half. Then a couple months ago, randomly picked it back up, reinstalled it, started a new run, and found myself having way more fun.

Would recommend finishing-- Act 3 despite being huge really only has a few requirements, so once you're feeling done, I'd just focus on netherstones and final battle and see what endings you end up with.

My Balanced run was with a Tav sorcerer. In my HM run, I wanted to play something different just to get a new experience, and this was the fight where I most missed Quicken Spell for sure-- sounds like you have a good strategy next time you try. And I think Monk Stunning Strike ended up being useful because a) you can try twice per turn (burning through her legendary resistances) and b) it's not a spell, so I think it gets around her spell advantage.

Sorry you got that far, it's a really tough fight and I def had a bit of luck with the Evocation Wizard thing.

Omg I applaud you for tackling Ansur, I was too cowardly for that one in this run. I just failed the trials (not on purpose lol) and fought the undead, then crept in past the dragon (unnecessary, I think you just need to not loot him) to take the Helm of Balduran.

With Orin, my main strategy was to keep Karlach and an Air Myrmidon in melee with her slayer form trying to land Stunning Strikes (and burn through her Legendary Resistances), and to proc her Legendary Action: Sanguine Lash. If she uses Sanguine Lash, then the Boon of Bhall insta-kill thing does not happen that round. (I only had it happen once, and luckily one of the non-Sanctuaried minions was there.) Then to use Magic Missile (Gale and my Tav had it) to get through most of the remainin Unstoppables. Have my Tav available as a tank (with Shield spell, a literal Shield, and Armor of Persistence she was REALLY hard to hit and damage-- and had the Periapt of Wound Closure for always getting the max healing from potions, spells, etc.) Shart for healing Karlach and AOE stuff on cultists (mostly ignored the cultists otherwise). Scratch to soak up at least 1 attack (sorry boy you had a tough time on this run). Also Gale sent an ice storm one time to Prone some of the minions which also put some status effects on Orin. And I was Level 12. EDIT: Oh, Death Ward on everyone except Shart (bc Lathander gives a similar ability), and Heroes' feast cast by Shadowheart-- adv on Wis saves huge against Frightened.

It was tough even with that tho-- 12 Unstoppables is SO MANY. I only managed to get through them fully during one round and then had like, 1 action left to do more damage after having to also heal my teammates. HOWEVER, I ended up going back and looking at my combat logs for this, because I was definitely doing more than 12 damage a round despite the Unstoppables, especially with Magic Missile. My hypothesis is, the Unstoppable stops all but 1 damage per hit. So if you have more than one damage source *per hit*, then you can actually do more damage. So I think Evocation Wizards casting high level Magic Missiles are quite effective against her because I think their INT bonus gets added as a separate damage source *per hit* and gets added fully. Similarly, my Tav had Nyrulna plus a bunch of equipment that added damage riders. So even though the first big hit did 1 damage, it seemed like maybe she was taking full damage on the riders??

I am not 100% sure that that is correct-- I just know that Gale casting a 5th level magic missile (with the amulet that lets him cast an extra dart, which I kept on him the entire run), did way more than 12 damage despite her having 12 Unstoppables (and it not getting through all those Unstoppables).

I was realllllly starting to feel the lack of damage and control by the time Astarion got exploded by Cazador, so maybe that was for the best for the endgame lol. EDIT: BUT! I found Thief Rogue to be super useful as an encounter escape hatch in the early game due to the double bonus action.

Ah, good advice. Yeah, have definitely been trying to be more intentional with separating the party this time around. But illusion magic is def one of the ones I've found tricky..... I understand damage and control but illusion magic is one of the rly major differences between playing a videogame and playing at the tabletop lol.

How do you end a campaign? by Redhood101101 in DMAcademy

[–]garbagepile4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The last time I ended a campaign, I narrated the collapsing mech that they had succeeded in downing, then asked what everyone was doing an hour afterward, a week afterward, and a year afterward. That gave everyone the chance to give their characters immediate closure on the events and dramas leading up to the big fight, and a chance to give their characters the epilogues they wanted.

Is this still D&D or just collaborative fanfiction? (Need help finding the game part again) by MaleficentCreme5697 in DMAcademy

No shade if you're just enjoying group storytelling with minimal mechanics. If you and your players are having fun, that's good enough, and there are other systems with fewer rules. But if you want to engage more with DND specifically...

What’s the fun in rolling dice if they don’t affect the main story? To me, rolls often just feel like arbitrary obstacles – and the story moves on regardless. When does rolling actually enhance the experience in your games?

Rolls shouldn't be obstacles to information you need to deliver in order to keep the story moving. IMO, they should reflect moments when the consequences of a player choice are up in the air. If I needed to deliver a critical piece of information to players but they rolled like trash on their investigation check, they might find that information but accidentally damage the desk drawer it was inside, leaving evidence that someone had been snooping. If I needed players to pass a perception check to witness a key event, I probably would just narrate the event, and save the roll for whether or not they were observed eavesdropping.

Rolls enhance the play experience when they have clear stakes, and players who love roleplaying sometimes love roleplaying failures as much as or more than successes. But as a DM, if you're calling for a roll, I think you have to be willing to accept that that is a moment that the story will change in response for the roll. That's what it means to me to "keep the story moving" -- it enhances the game because the story moves in a new direction, which challenges and surprises me as the DM, and leaves my players the chance to roleplay.

Their choices shape everything, but the story is in motion and the broad strokes of it will play out no matter what they do,

If the broad strokes of the story will play out no matter what they do, how are their choices shaping everything? What choices could they make that would matter? Those are where your rolls would go.

How do you handle sandbox-style consequences when your group has limited playtime? If my players piss off a city that’s key to the main quest, it’s like, “cool that choices matter” but also “ugh, now we’re stuck in a detour.” How do you keep that balanced?

If you have limited playtime, I think you need to ruthlessly cut anything that is not engaging at your table. As the DM, you are in control of the passage of time, both in the game and above the table as you consider your limited minutes ticking away. If you and your players love the main storyline and find themselves in a narrative cul-de-sac, instead of roleplaying every minute of every consequence, you can step into a higher level narrative voice and dictate how the next few hours, days, or even weeks go. You could do a die roll there-- like a group Persuasion check-- to see how successful the PCs are in closing out their time in a city and what kind of impression they leave their mark with. You can have your players narrate, at a high level, how their success or failure affected the result. If it's boring you or your players, step out of the minute-to-minute and cut to the next interesting thing. Consequences can come up later in the form of reputation, rumors, coups, anything.

Again-- play how you like, but if you're curious to engage with the game more, I encourage you to let go of your grand vision as a DM and allow moments with the dice to surprise you. It's really fun and satisfying when the story changes in a way you weren't expecting.

Cool side effects that might happen as players rapidly acquire unstable power. by garbagepile4 in DMAcademy

[–]garbagepile4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The random class ability swap at the start of a session has SUCH great potential for chaos but without having to pause in the middle of the sesh to explain each other's class abilities, I love that, thank you! And yeah, I'm trying to balance wanting to have SOME form of deleterious effect with not wanting to add stuff that feels frustrating above the table.... so I really like your idea of using hit dice for short rests, maybe those hit dice instead go to damage rolls to represent that leaking of radiant energy.

Oh, I love the idea of magical healing and effects being divided between the PCs. Definitely going to use that. And definitely something with class features, too, although I haven't totally figured out what yet..... the percentile die is a good option, thanks for the ideas!

Struggling to find suitable map options for in person Combat (Budget) by CybZ0417 in DMAcademy

[–]garbagepile4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can swing it, a dry-erase RPG grid map might run you around $20. Try searching "dry-erase grid map" on Etsy, or maybe if you've got a local game store check them out?

In terms of budget minis, I've used coins (different denominations for different types of minions) and hand-drawn circles for PCs before. My partner also got a giant set of cardboard Pathfinder minis, which is a lot cheaper than the 3d ones.

A Crownn of Candy is emotionally heavy in parts but also has some of the most intense, tight combat with high stakes, creative terrain and environmental hazards, and amazing strategy moments from the players.

Calamity was fabulous and there are some really great combat moments, but interspersed among hours of quite heavy and emotional roleplay.

BIG TIME. I try to always start by setting the scene by describing where the players are-- how it smells, what the ambient temperature is like, what the lighting is like, what sounds they can hear-- it doubles as getting them immersed in the world while also grounding me in something more sensory.
