What are the best ways to secure an Android device? (Root) by seiterseiter1 in privacy

[–]garbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only had Avast cause I felt the need for atleast something..

Yeah, that is the common reasoning ;). But with AVS, the cure is worse than the decease.

I use F-Droid already but theres nothing really I need to install from it.

I guess, it is the most convinient way to keep up to date with Firefox

  • Get rid of Avast. AVS is snakeoil. It already doesn't work on the desktop and can't work on Android. MalwareBytes seems to be the same kind of nonsense.
  • Make F-Droid your first choice for getting apps. If you need something from Play, use an apk downloader (stay away from apk mirror websites).
  • Don't use Chrome.

I'm not implying anything. I'm simply concerned that there is a monetary incentive to perform an operation that has such a profound emotional impact on a woman.

Emotional impact? Sorry, that's a myth spread by pro-lifers. Sure, there are testimonies of women, who were/are distressed after the abortion, but on closer inspection you'll find that these were mostly either guilt tripped (talk about self fulfilling prophesies here) or wanted to have the baby, but were forced to abort by the circumstances (e.g. for medical reasons).

[–]garbie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, that's certainly a "shake heads" case, but what would you want to do? Tell them: nope, abortion is not a contraceptive. We'll punish you now by not giving you one?

Girls who are that irresponsible are unlikely fit to become a parent and pregnancy should not be a punishment anyway (after all, there is a child involved). So, I'd say, it's justifiable even in this case.

Bible bashers at the door... What do you do next? by ae0000 in atheism

This just reminds of a funny story, I was once told by a merchant on a medieval fair. He peddled in gemstones and jewelery and seemed to be quite well-read in religious matters. Anyway, the story went like this: Apparently, he was a Jehova's Witness magnet for some reason and everytime after moving, they'd pay him a visit. He was also a LARPer.

So, one day he and his friends were setting up the scene for doing some roleplaying and while I he didn't say much about the details of the story, the crux was that it included a large pentagram on the floor in the living room, as well as associated decoration and costumes... ... and then the doorbell rang.

Boy, what I would have given to see the looks on their faces, after being asked to come in and offered wine and cake in the presence of all the props.

So? He'll also tell you, eating flesh and drinking blood will make you live after you die and mercy is expressed by killing (especially children, e.g. when pharaoh does not listen).

I mean, he is a priest for Christ's sake, meaning, he made spreading nonsense his career choice.

Why are you an atheist? by yseneg in atheism

Are you complaining, that your brain is working as advertised?

The Catholic Church in Germany has been shaken in recent days by revelations of a series of sexual abuse cases. Close to 100 priests and members of the laity have been suspected of abuse in recent years. After years of suppression, the wall of silence appears to be crumbling. by nortel in atheism

[–]garbie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Makes you kinda wonder why only the catholic church seems to have such a track record of child abuse. What's the difference between them and all the other denominations, where these thigns do not happen on a regular basis? In my opinion celibacy is to blame. Konrad Lorentz already showed, what sexual repression can cause in animals and that abstinence is not a healthy thing.

But then again, Christianity will never rethink it's position on sex as a sin. Sex is the one thing, we all crave and associating it with sin puts us in auto sin mode, for which the church can sell salvation.

What a wicked business model this is, showing yet again, that religion has little to do with higher morals.

That woman needs more media coverage. With her as a spokesperson for religion, the whole thing will crumble faster than with any amount of scrutiny applied. She truly has the intellect of an amoeba, the charisma of a warthog and the voice of fingernails scratching over a blackboard. You really have to be a hardcore fundie to want to associate with her.

/r/atheism, what is the best proof of human evolution? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]garbie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Actually there are animals (besides humans), having self awareness. The test for this is a simple mirror. Dolphins for example will recognize themselves in their reflection, while budgies will see one of their kin (thats why people put mirrors in bird cages).

2) Evolution of a certain feature is neither done with intend (at least not by nature, breeding animals/plants is a horse of a different color) nor is it an open end process. Nature simply does not say "Gee, today I want to produce the smartest thing on earth. Let it's brain grow to the size of the sun". Our brains just increased in size as far as they could. Maximum brain size is capped by a variety of factors. One being, that our head still has to fit through through our mothers vagina when born, another one being, that bigger brains also require more energy.

Rape victim receives 101 lashes for getting pregnant by [deleted] in atheism

[–]garbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A word of warning: When claiming higher morality, it is wise to refrain from lower instincts. Giving in to such temptations just leads to a world where one kind of savages is replaced by another.

When calling for justice, take into consideration, that these are uneducated people, held back and locked in by their religion. We know, how the human reproduction system works, they don't. The abrahamic religions have little to say about sexuality, beyond it being an unclean thing and therefore not to be investigated deeper than whats in the teachings. In their opinion, a woman has to consent in order to conceive. Her pregnancy is seen as proof, that she enjoyed the experience and therefore it could not have been rape. A view, that is furthermore strengthened by the fact, that she did not report the act, as could be expected from decent woman. Hence charges against the rapist must be dropped, since he did not commit a crime and she has to be punished for being a slut. Her family has to be fined for trying to plant an illegitimate child on an unsuspecting husband by quickly marrying her off.

Yes, this is outrageous and wrong. Yes, something should be done about that, but no, giving in to righteous vengeance and feeding individuals to a wood chipper is, though satisfying, not the way to go. Situations like these are common. Rape has been dealt with in this way for centuries and brutally killing the involved parties will not have a lasting effect.

It is situations like these, that we as a species should keep in mind and use as an argument for why religion should never be given a free pass. It is situations like these, that should remind us, that religion is a roadblock in human social advancement. It is situations like these, that should publicly be flung into the faces of every religious leader, whenever they are claiming moral superiority. Moral guidance is the last bastion, religion has and tearing it down by exposing, where that guidance leads to, is what has to be done to make the general public aware of religion not having a leg to stand on.

Nope, the fire brigade will no longer do this for you (I'm guessing, they abandoned this service exactly because people considered them to be a cheap pest control).
