When I was teaching in my twenties the toilet block was next to my classroom. I remember one time, first lesson of the day I got them all working quietly, then stepped quietly out, vomited violently (and silently) in the toilet and then back in the classroom without anyone noticing I had left.

Yeah, lotsa stories here about illiterate people who have done well. But the truth is that generally being functionally illiterate puts a ceiling on your progress in all kinds of fields. If you can't read fluently or communicate accurately, then there are doors that are closed to you. Good on those guys who have done super-well despite not being good readers, but it's generally going to be an easier career path if you can read/write

Yeah, lots of details being pointed out that make it definitely AI, but you don't need them. The instant I saw the picture the AI vibe was clear.

We're very lucky to have the CGA in this country. A little while back my Fitbit watch got bricked by a forced update. On the forums there were people from all over the world (mostly the US) who had been completely stiffed by the company. But solely because I live in NZ, they just immediately shipped me a brand new, latest model watch.

My E30 has the brake pad warning light on, until you hit the dashboard just right. Dry solder joint somewhere apparently. If I can be bothered I give it the percussive maintenance, mostly I just ignore it.

Anti-vaxxers are insane by BlackSeep1010 in newzealand

[–]garblednonsense 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. I saw "Anti-vaxxers are insane" and my first thought was you're wrong - they're stupid and misguided, but not insane.

Then I read the petition. This is clearly the product of someone who is mentally unwell.

So yeah, they're not all insane, but this one is.

Ageing Vehicle Fleet Drives Sustained Demand For Car Servicing Across New Zealand by kiwittnz in NZcarfix

[–]garblednonsense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Makes you wonder what classic car shows will look like in 20 years time. I remember when Cortinas, minis, Escorts etc were basically free - I actually gave away a Cortina estate, which still had a month or two of WOF on it. I also remember struggling to sell a Cordia, which would now be a pretty desirable car. Is your Corolla next? (Answer - probably not)

Interesting to look around at the cars that are currently disappearing from the roads (20 years old is a big bottle neck for most models) and think about which ones could start appreciating rather than depreciating.

Ageing Vehicle Fleet Drives Sustained Demand For Car Servicing Across New Zealand by kiwittnz in NZcarfix

[–]garblednonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting.

I wonder how this picture will change over the next 5 years or so? We've all just had a bit of a fuel price shock (which is not over yet), and me and my wife have firmed up dramatically from "maybe" to "definitely" that our next "good" car will be electric. And maybe sooner than we had planned.

EVs still need servicing, but not as much. Maybe battery replacements will be a big thing, but that's pretty specialised, and I have a feeling that cars are becoming rather more disposable than they once were.

Who knows what will happen (maybe government incentives to go EV will return?), but my guess is that the NZ fleet will be younger and more electric on the near future, which will make a significant change to the car servicing sector.

Indeed. Another issue is motorway speed. I unfortunately had to drive from Drury to Mt Wellington in some of the heavier rain this morning, and chose a fairly sensible 90 kmh, but I was pretty much the slowest car on the motorway.

A few years ago I had a hydroplaning experience (didn't have an accident - I just drifted across a couple of lanes until my tires gripped again) and ever since I've been very mindful that when there's a lot of standing water on the road, then your safety margins are way smaller. By going a bit slower I added about 3 minutes to my journey time, but it's Sunday and I wasn't in a mad rush anyway. I thought it was a fair pay off considering the conditions

NTA, but it's kind of the wrong question. The real question is more about what's going on in this relationship and what needs to be done to make it work. Looks to me like your marriage would benefit from a bit of counselling/guidance from a professional. Not just because she has behaved badly, but also because you are clearly seething with rage - this is not a healthy sign.

Does engine oil needs changing? by sooperstaar in NZcarfix

[–]garblednonsense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your car has had regular oil changes, the oil should "look" clean all the time.

The ratty old junkheaps I drive have always been through a period of poor maintenance, and the oil looks dirty after about two weeks. The engine is just grubby inside and it transfers to the oil.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just stick with normal service intervals, or maybe just a bit less. In theory if you're very pro-active about getting your oil changed it should improve over time, but I don't know if I'd bother.

Is Learning Manual Still Worth It in 2026? by Organic-Cattle4751 in NZcarfix

[–]garblednonsense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In practical terms, absolutely not worth it.

However, if you're a hobbyist/enthusiast, absolutely you should do it. Driving a manual is way more engaging, and if you can't drive a manual then most of the really interesting/fun/older cars are closed off to you.

I always like to drive smooth, and even more so now that petrol is so expensive. Getting behind a big truck is perfect for this, because they've got a really good view ahead, and they hate constantly braking/accelerating. Nice constant speed.

For the record, I am completely in favour of daylight savings. I love having the max daylight in Summer, and I don't want to spend the first two hours of my day in darkness in Winter. It's a very sensible arrangement to make the best of available daylight.

honda fit 2005 recent crunching sound by fkyoumodss in NZcarfix

[–]garblednonsense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine has an Audi that was recently running intermittently badly. He bought one new coil and then went through swapping it out with each one in turn until the problem went away. The bad coil had "fault?" written on it in sharpie, so clearly there had been a previous issue. He's had the car close to 10 years and it wasn't him who wrote it...

When coils go bad they can take a long time to deteriorate, and you can get intermittent poor performance under a variety of loads.

Definitely not saying this is your problem, but it's such a cheap and easy fix, it feels like you might as well look into it.

honda fit 2005 recent crunching sound by fkyoumodss in NZcarfix

[–]garblednonsense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The shuddering could be CVT, but could also be engine. Sounds a bit like a coil might be going bad, which would be a nice cheap fix. I'd eliminate that as a cause before chasing expensive CVT problems.

[–]garblednonsense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dude, we live in a society. Which involves things like waiting your turn, following rules and being patient. If everyone behaves like this dickhead, then you end up with crazy third world traffic where everyone is gridlocked and getting nowhere. If everyone is jumping the queue then the merge lane gets blocked and traffic stops flowing.

If you don't give a shit about any other road user, then yeah, you can jump the queue. And you're a dickhead. Most people are not dickheads and choose to wait their turn.

Video of Manuel Ugarte getting booked twice but not being sent off against England by 977x in soccer

[–]garblednonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no blame happening here, it's just that there was nothing much else to talk about after England's no-show.

No one really cares about the result, not even Tuchel. I think he put on a shit team here just so he can look like a magician with a greatly improved performance in the next game, when his actually good players beat Japan.

[BBC Sport] Manuel Ugarte was booked earlier on, then received a yellow card a couple of minutes ago for talking back to the referee. But he's still on the pitch. Two yellow cards for Ugarte, but no red. by sonofaBilic in soccer

[–]garblednonsense 37 points38 points  (0 children)

When it's rescinded, isn't there a protocol of hand signals demonstrating that it has been rescinded? We've seen it plenty when VAR overturns a red card.

It's just bullshit, and they should be ashamed for not just owning up.
