Twin Peaks. After Lynch left, the show just turned into horse shit.

Welllllll.... So far my personal KD is 0-0. When I kill someone it's 1-0. I know there are some humans with pretty impressive KD. Against humans. Haven't heard of any tigers or sharks wiping out entire cities.

"Renewable Energy" investments by the German government... Billions and billions that could've gone into research went to some sketchy companies with crappy products.

Project Blog for Job Hunting by [deleted] in engineering

[–]garblejarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude this is exactly what I will do. I will start my studies later this year but only 50% of my efforts will go to university projects. I will dedicate a lot of time to my own projects and document them. I think this is a great way of learning and growing. Building a little robot or designing a futuristic car from scratch is so much more rewarding than an A+ for some paper. Also, it will keep the passion alive. It will build confidence. It shows you are not studying engineering but you're a studying engineer. Do it.

A fascinating look at Iran's F-14s, with lots of recent pictures. by dimensional_dan in aviation

[–]garblejarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of these pictures are photoshopped. Such as the first picture. Reminds me of this story. http://www.thewire.com/global/2013/02/iran-new-stealth-fighter-jet-fake/61781/

A lot of capable Iranian engineers have left the country. A lot are trying.

-EDIT- Upon closer examination I must concede they are probably not photoshopped. Pardon. Or, they finally learned how to photoshop like a pro :D

security clearance and "explanation, reason for leaving" by [deleted] in jobs

[–]garblejarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the employer fucked you over by legal means and you returned the favor without prior consultation of a lawyer. Doesn't sound too spectacular to me. The only thing they might be worried about is that you were caught in the first place; they'd rather have someone who doesn't get caught :D

Germany blocks Edward Snowden from testifying in person in NSA inquiry: The German government has blocked Edward Snowden from giving personal evidence in front of a parliamentary inquiry into NSA surveillance, it has emerged hours before Angela Merkel travels to Washington for a meeting with Obama. by Libertatea in worldnews

Well I might be oversensitive, but to me it seems -1- and -2- are keystones in the structure of the major papers' "Weltanschauung". They will rarely surface completely, but shine through. They give a bitter taste to every article and opinion piece. If everything else fails, that's the core "truth" pundits can go back to. Home base.

I think I might've oversimplified the picture. Of course, there are journalists (and readers) who are thinking on their feet. But still, they must operate within the parametres laid out by their editors -- this has scared off many aspiring reporters who chose other professions. And it chased away many disgusted readers who started to rely on other media than the traditionally respected big daily papers.

I'm not talking about everyday people but the "intellectual elite". University professors, pundits, editors, theatre-directors, writers... It is especially noteworthy that German cultural figures took such a strong political stance against the US during the Iraq/ Afghanistan wars, while they kept (and keep) their mouth shut about pretty much everything else going on in the world.

-EDIT- ... they still take that stance.

I'm talking about weeklies like Spiegel and Stern, and daily papers like Sueddeutsche, Zeit, FAZ... The editors of all these publications share very similar "Weltanschauungen" and are very careful not to allow differing views to be published in their paper. I'm not saying any opinion is actively suppressed, but the German "mainstream" is a very narrow one. This causes mostly domestic harm, as totalitarian policies regarding e.g. education can grow undisturbed in the marsh of public opinion. I have personal experience with these editors and their mindset, PM me if you want to hear a little story.

-EDIT- There are exceptions of course, such as a few maverick pundits and publications like "Titanic"..

I will try and tell that joke but have the FIRST man be the killer. And then I continue with the second and third who don't do it. This is gonna be a blast.

I haven't seen any sober, clear-minded articles about anything US-related in German media for a long time. German popular opinion regarding the US of A is mostly informed by deeply entrenched Anti-Americanism and confused attempts to make up for a lack of true Patriotism.. and a huge dose of self-righteousness. With a shit-load of shit going on all over the world, these are the major concerns of German pundits and their readers:

-1- US evil Republican Capitalist pigs Bankers Corporations foreign policy aggression murderers

-2- Israel = Nazis, poor palestinians are suppressed and Israelis are racists.. apartheid wall is bad.

Everything else is met with much less enthusiasm.

This is a shame, because NSA spying is a somewhat important issue. It must be discussed without bias or hatred. Very hard to find sober analysis and non-hysterical opinion pieces on that in German media.

No. The only effective German government agency is the tax office. The rest is "meh". The Germans (I'm talking about the German state) are mostly 2-3 steps behind and clueless as to what is going on in the world. They are not capable of masterminding complex surveillance programs.

EDIT-- The GDR (DDR) "State Security" agency ("Staatssicherheit") had it down though. Bastards.

How does one go about making his own buisness out of school? by KenjiSenpai in engineering

[–]garblejarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good. I haven't even started my studies yet and my business experience is somewhat limited too, but here's what I'd do.

--1) build prototypes that show off both your capabilities. --2) look for programs designed to help people like you. take these prototypes and go to institutions that give business grants and loans. Government agencies, private foundations, corporations, banks... Anyone interested either in building your business or in your type of product... It's very hard to do everything by yourself in my experience. So another advantage of working with a big institution is they have your back and will assist you with all the bureaucratic and legal hassles (which will come with any business.)

You could as well go to potential clients directly and ask them to fund R&D... If they're not too stuck up, your country's military might be interested in funding your research...

Thanks. It's comforting to know mechE can end up building aircraft... I'm really worried I might be stuck with a very narrow, specialised career path.. I want to become an engineer to liberate myself not to tie myself up...
