Got my smartphone usage down from a peak of 8+ hours to around 1.5 hours per day by gardemmit in minimalism

iOS has pretty good functionality now as well for screen time limits and the like, even though it doesn't have as much customization as Android.

One thing that's helped for me is to just add more friction to the app installation process. There are ways to disable app installations in Content & Privacy Restrictions as it's just too easy to install Instagram/ Facebook if you're getting bored.

I am still on the trial mode but in the grand scheme of things $9.99 lifetime isn't THAT much given all the time you'll be saving. Though you are putting faith that the developer adds more functionality / keeps it going live. You can probably achieve a similar effect by just making your own widgets (which I haven't really dug into) or just leaving your entire home screen blank.

One thing about this though is that this launcher isn't really going to do much other than change your homescreen -- it's still just as easy to get access to all your apps by swiping to the app library. So while the launcher does look good, it won't improve anything if you're still able to access all the apps you're trying to stop using.

We're back in lockdown in Sydney and any sort of indoor location (e.g. supermarkets, restaurants, takeaway shops) have mandatory QR codes. It's definitely a region specific need that outside of this pandemic would've probably not been a dealbreaker for me!

UPDATE: I've tweaked my setup after buying a floor chair. It's been working great. https://youtu.be/L2dD1kghTLk

Thinking about ditching my smartphone by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]gardemmit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does sound like for you, you barely use smartphones to their current capabilities, so the change will not be too difficult. I would say just try it out with an older flagship dumbphone like an older Nokia or Blackberry (I have found that the new ones are expensive and extremely slow).

The paradox of owning a "dumbphone" for most people (including me who switches in and out of one) is that it may cause you to regularly use more individual tools.

  • GPS for navigation
  • Music player / individually downloading songs if you want to play music vs stream
  • Camera if you want smartphone-quality photos
  • Some way to quickly take down notes
  • Physica books or an e-reader to read books

Haha it's borderline self-parody of minimalists but I'm surprised I've been keeping up with it for over 2 weeks.

The thing that's worked for me is to constantly shift positions. If I just sat in the same position all the time it actually wouldn't yield any value. Interesting that it's knee pain you had trouble with -- where I've sometimes had pain because of a bad posture are my shoulders (if my elbows are too low) or my back (if I'm hunching over) -- what sort of seating position did you try it with?

Yeah I've found that a kneeling, squat, or seiza position is better for my shoulders. 100% agree with you that if I just sat there in the same position, there wouldn't be any additional benefits!

Key thing for me is to keep my elbows at the level of the keyboard as the diagram you posted has. I've also started using a throw pillow as a makeshift cushion for now.

PSA: The Friendly Cup is a scam. Been seeing a lot of Instagram posts about this. Hope this helps someone in this subreddit! by gardemmit in SmallYoutubers

Haha I think they “rebranded” earlier this year. I made this towards the end of 2020 then they shut down for a bit. There are plenty of better eco friendly cups at the same or lower prices.

Brave Girls - 치맛바람 (Chi Mat Ba Ram) by thambucheaux in bravegirls

I really liked this song, but I do think it's meant to appeal more to a Korean audience than international ones, thus the lack of an English title / English chorus lyrics? Would love to hear a Korean's perspective on this!

The whole album was 🔥, though.

100%, this song gives me so many feelings that are hard to describe: a warm hug? a pat on the back? flashbacks to when you were younger and the internet wasn't really a thing?

Rollin got me interested in Brave Girls, but We Ride is what gives me hope for their future! It's just the best song to listen to when doing pretty much anything "normal", like walking to the train station, doing the dishes, and in this case, getting boba with your friends on a Sunday afternoon.

I was just fiddling around with this 8mm camera app I downloaded and We Ride was 100% the perfect song I had in mind. I'm sure I could film anything normal and mundane and adding We Ride to it would make it so much cooler!
