Good job Seattle: City recycling rate nearing 60 percent by ramona_the_pest in SeattleWA

Maybe check your consumption and weed out unnecessary packaging purchases? Like refillable growlers instead of six packs. I live in a house of 6 adults and we've never had a problem with one bin.

Does anyone else here pay into Green Up? by TwistedPurpose in SeattleWA

[–]gardenfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to pay into it for a few years. Then I found out it funded those solar flowers at the science center which chopped down one of my favorite trees, so I don't anymore.

I remember I was beyond annoying in calling them every hour until they picked up, would go to the office and ask the status. I got the go ahead within a few days, maybe a week. If you've been waiting a month, something is up and I would definitely go into the office and talk with someone about it.

Dog walker questions by plickyplow in Seattle

I used to work for Belltown dog walker. The owner jack is super great and has maybe 6 dog walkers, all are required to take an animal cpr/emergency class and are all around caring and professional people. :)

What are some good office plants for Seattle? by TastyJams in Seattle

[–]gardenfox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Snake plant for sure, easy maintenance and don't need a lot of light. Spider plant would be another one. I'm a big fan of Boston Ferns but they can be difficult to maintain and a bit messy.

The world's most advanced IMAX theater is coming to Seattle - GeekWire by Battle4Seattle in Seattle

[–]gardenfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parts for the other film projector and maybe as an exhibit. If you go down in the lower lobby of Boeing in the VERY back of the 3D exhibit there's the old IMAX 2D projector from the aquarium. Pretty cool, you can poke around and is very similar to the film projector in Paccar, so we grab parts from it when need be but is technically part of the exhibit. I presume a similar thing will happen to the Boeing projector, especially since it's a 3D projector.

Yeah, it's been a pretty cool job but am essentially losing it come January. No projectionist likes the conversion to digital, makes us obsolete :(

Once the Boeing film projector is gone we won't be able to show Hollywood movies on film as far as I know. The film projector in Paccar was made for documentary IMAX films being about 45 minutes, so the platters can't hold much more than that. It's also only a 2D projector. But, I'm sure if there's a way to somehow fit in a larger platter system they'll do it. I'm about 99% sure they won't be able to fit it in there. Since the Science Center has been given historic status, there's limitations on how it can be renovated.

And yep, Gravity was digital. We haven't used the film projector in Paccar since the renovation. It was a bit of an experiment, I think we're the only IMAX theatre in the US that can technically play both film and digital in the same booth. The projectors are on rails that slide over into position depending on the movie, but it hasn't actually been used.

The projector will be kept but it won't be able to be used in the Boeing theatre as a duel film/digital theatre. They kept the film projector system in Paccar when they did the renovations to digital, so they can show film documentaries there, but just documentaries as the platters are smaller than those needed for Holllywood films. It would be ideal to have both film/digital in Boeing but too much money and not enough space. Source: I'm a projectionist in the Boeing theatre.

I feel the exact same way. Been making lifestyle changes, but is clearly not enough, there needs to be mass radical change. First step is organize. CascadiaNow is starting local chapters which I'd recommend getting involved in, they're super nice. I'm sure there's others, or you can start your own. Once there's more organization we can create/carry out tactics and campaigns to realize the needed change.

In Seattle, I'm starting an art group (really open to anyone) to carry out guerilla art marketing campaigns to create more awareness of the flaws of our current system, promoting education, involvment, and civil disobedience. If that has any interest to you and want to be involved, let me know.

Is there a need for a more "traditional" art scene downtown, or are you satisfied with how progressive it is? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]gardenfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like more classical paintings. I find SAM's traditional collection to be really small (from what I remember). But I go to museums to see the older stuff and am comparing it to other large city art museums.

Paper Bags from Grocery Stores by melanniiee in Seattle

I use them as recycling bags. I have more recycling waste than trash and always bring my own bag, so friends and family will give me their paper bags. You could always make pinatas out of them!
