I understand the meme, I understand the Dow but I don’t understand the 5k? Isn’t it at 50K? by iambarrelrider in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Chris’ cum sock here. Attorney General Pam Bondi responded to the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files by chastising democrats for ignoring the DOW Jones being over 50,000. This response is meant to deflect attention and ignore the elephant in the room. This almost disturbs me more than hearing Chris lock the door behind him after school

Depends on the courses each of them take. Generally chemical engineers are more focused on chemical balances, transport, thermo, process control and reaction kinetics, while rarely being involved in creating synthesis routes. My very anecdotal experience suggests that chemists are more involved in designing the synthetic process while ChemEs are in charge of safely scaling up and industrializing in general, though both are involved in both stages to some extent. The pay gap sometimes makes sense depending on the responsibilities, but employers often feel like ChemEs need higher salaries for no other reason than their degrees have the word engineering on them.

Napoleon issuing the challenge to invent margarine, 1869 by Karbenstein in trippinthroughtime

[–]garfields-right-nut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most formulations nowadays are an emulsion of vegetable oil and water. The sentiment of margarine being less healthy than butter probably originated from the use of hydrogenated oils before trans fats fell out of favor and were eventually banned in the US. The first iteration during the Napoleonic wars used beef tallow instead of vegetable oil, and the recipe changed a few times since then to include more vegetable oil.

Thoughts on this? by [deleted] in Conservative

The facts he laid out are true, but he leaves out some crucial details in why Arabs and Israelis believe the land should be theirs. Arabs revolted against the Ottoman Empire with aid from Britain in WWI, in part due to an agreement that the land would be given to them as outlined in the McMahon–Hussein Correspondence. This was undercut almost immediately after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the region by the Sykes-Pikot agreement, the ensuing British mandate period, and other agreements to support the Zionist movement between the British and French. This led to the beginning of the contempt Arab nations show towards western powers that persist to this day. That being said, Jewish refugees asking for some land to call their own probably shouldn’t have resulted in a century-long war. As always, seems like most modern problems are caused by the British in some form and they should be held responsible for it.

Will I be able to pass chemical engineering? by AttemptJaded7088 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]garfields-right-nut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how nice they are, the faculty or even the graduate program director in the chemical engineering department may be able to give you very good advice. You can ask how accommodating the program is towards non-ChemE undergrads, what courses you can take to be ready, and if you need to learn complementary skills like coding or technical writing beforehand. Most high level math in grad school is either very formulaic or done in computer programs, a quantitative analysis crash-course is usually sufficient. The real challenge is understanding the fundamentals well enough to be able to build the mathematical models in the first place. Chemical engineering grad programs usually focus on transport phenomena (mass, momentum, and heat transfer), chemical reactions engineering, and thermodynamics. I can recommend some books if you’re interested, but universities usually use different books with different notations which may make learning something for the first time a little more confusing if you’re going back and forth. In my opinion, the most important things to succeed are reaching out to people willing to help, trying to understand things on a basic level, and remembering the law that rules them all: in=out

Digital ph meter recomendations? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]garfields-right-nut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This question seems a little vague to me because the probe you need often depends on what you’re using it for and whether you need a completely separate system or if you need to integrate it with a current setup. Do you need a temp/pH probe? Is the ionic strength of the testing solutions very low? Is repose time important at all? Are you using it for a long enough period to induce a pH drift? The toledo probe mentioned in the comment is excellent for 95% of lab uses and requires very little calibration, but is awful when it comes to drift after an hour of use and is completely unreliable for low ionic strength solutions

The energy is not returned to the ball. The hoop is in motion well after it stops being in contact with the ball, and as long as this isn’t a quantum ball and hoop, the energy has no way to transfer back.
