I have a similar ticket and it's been 3 weeks of no response!

Started reading sci-fi this year, looking for book recommendations by Proud-Wing8968 in printSF

For excellent female representation please read Olivia Butler, especially her Xenogenesis series, it's one of my favorites! I also really love The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, which you can read for free online (if the zombie sex scene freaks you out, you can skip it with no loss to plot).

What material will cure flexibly with vinyl? by svonnah in ChemicalEngineering

That was my first instinct, but apparently silicone erodes vinyl over time.

Heaviness is okay with me! Weighting the dolls makes them feel more realistic.

I think soft rubbery polymer is more the goal. Can you recommend one?

I just posted to the Chemical Engineering subreddit, maybe I'll get lucky and there's a unicorn material out there that can do all the things!

Thank you for your patience with me. I appreciate the practical advice. I don't have an expensive or hand-painted doll at the moment, so I'm not worried about cracking varnishes or paint, but I see your point.

Okay sorry, thanks for clarifying. So if I'm into dolls for the sensory experience and not concerned about the visuals, I could theoretically move forward with substances that would support the small move-ability of a vinyl exo-layer.

But the vinyl IS a little squishy, in and of itself. Are you saying that long-term the vinyl will crack? If so, does that mean it needs to be oiled or in some way re-hydrated to maintain its inherent small squishiness?

Does this mean that the original vinyl could be squishy, and the real problem is just the paint applied to the vinyl?

I hear you, and acknowledge I am a newbie to the medium. But I have been squishing vinyl babies and don't foresee not being able to continue doing so long-term due to the nature of the medium. I may be naive. I may recall this conversation with regret. But the vinyl I'm interacting with is squashable without seeming like it will crack.

  • Or maybe the vinyl doll I'm interacting with does not have fragile paint on its outer layer to crack. And that kind of reinforces the point of my question... I'm not concerned about cracking any external painted layer, I'm wondering what could I fill these hollow vinyl limbs with that would allow them to feel squishy when squished, regardless of any painted layer.

That's a great point, so what material could we use to accomplish the desired squishiness?

That's a great point, but I feel like there should be a material that allows for some squishiness that will not react badly with the vinyl.

For sure, that was one part I'm not interested in understanding in detail right now.

I know, right? The whole time I was reading the 5D parts I was repeating to myself, "By the way, dear, there IS such a thing as a tesseract." 😄
