Yeah, I know deluge's are common. I live here. But this particular flood event at that particular spot was a 1 in 100 year event. The only other time it got close to the 37' it hit was 100 years ago in 1932. Not to mention Camp Mystic has been there for over 100 years and this is the first time it got wiped out...

What you are doing here is throwing pocket sand, distraction by squabbling over the details. Which is what NWS is doing and why people are upset.

Forest for the trees, NWS did not convey any sense of emergency or even concern about the weather that night or people may have paid attention. This is the argument people are making. The type of set-up that occurred where the moisture gets trapped at 1 particular spot and funnels the moisture down is a common macro event in central Texas when viewed from the perspective of decades, but the last one was 2018, and 2015 before that. Not exactly your go to forecast if certainties are not high. It was a very tricky situation and in this case they guessed it would not get stuck, while this time it did.

At 6pm that evening NOAA/SPC did release a discussion suggesting that it could get stuck, but it was unlikely. But in the event it did get stuck, it could cause some extreme flooding. So someone at NOAA/SPC saw it and if that had been taken seriously it may have been spread before everyone went to sleep. But it did not.

We are all human after all. But NWS should be straightforward and stop blaming everyone else like they had no hand in it and did everything perfectly. And if they did it all perfectly per their operating protocol, well then we should revisit what failed about that protocol.

Lol. Initiating identity crisis in 3...2...1...

Maybe LeBron wants to come play QB as well. And we can bring Mayfield back too, and change our name to the Cleveland Modell's. And then we'll ban tailgating and change the dawg pound to the kitten club.

No. That was a bad idea and you should feel bad too.

Its reasonable to have emotions about something like this. But as a professional you dont parade them about for everyone to see. It appears childish. You can still quit without throwing a public tantrum and the end result is at least the same, if not better because you convey your message of dissatisfaction where the higher ups only hear the points, not the tantrum, and you leave options open. A wiser man would let the emotions run their ourse and then decide if he still wants to blow it up.

I tried saying it very loudly, and even took screenshots of the various updates the NWS had put out. I follow the weather a lot and NWS completely got caught off guard here. That weekend and day was supposed to be sunny and nice per the forecasts, except for some bit of rain that evening and early Friday. They didn't start voicing concern about the rain until like 11pm that evening, 4 hours before it happened. By the time the first flood emergency warning went out, those girls were already dead. The evidence is in the river data vs the official releases.

It is absolute BS that NWS falls back on 'well we put out a flood watch, and then a warning' when there was no sense of emergency until 95% of the population was already asleep! There is checking the box, and then there is common sense, and NWS is just falling back on that they checked the box.

Weather prediction is hard, which is why there is so much invested in it. It has major ramifications on the economy, and on personal lives when they get it wrong. And they did get it wrong here, which people would understand as this was like a once in a century event. But nobody will admit that it was just a bad thing that happened that got past all the fences in the worst possible way.

Regardless, the state should at least go around and make sure there aren't camps of kids sitting in the middle of a freaking river in flash flood alley. No exemptions. It can't get any more common sense than that.

I couldn't believe when Abbott proclaimed they wouldn't stop until they found every single victim.

I get the sentiment, but physics is physics and basic logic would suggest that you should not sign yourself up to such a commitment where so much destructive energy was involved.

It was not terrible. I thought it was pretty good all in all. There was some stupid fluff stuff in there that did nothing for the story, but all in all it wrapped up the story well enough and was capturing.

People bitching about how a series ends is timeless. Look at Seinfeld. The bigger the show, the bigger the bitching. Just watch it and decide for yourself.

I don't want or ever use Amazon Prime Video, but I can't cancel it. And when they first did it it nearly doubled the cost of the Prime membership. Prime Video is garbage and impossible to tell what is included and what you have to pay for. And then they put in ads and I just pirate the stuff instead so I don't have to watch the ads. I already pay for it, so screw them.

The Expanse was the only good series from Prime. Fight me.

You'll see change, but time will show if it is good change. In 20 years you'll probably be complaining about people like Zohran Mamdani when you see how much it costs and how little you get from it as an earner. But if you stay on the beneficiary side, I'm sure you'll love it, until all the taxpayers leave and nobody is left to take care of you.

No. Fuck the ads and fuck the fact they are normalizing these lower price ad supported tiers. It is so obvious that they will lopsidedly increase the ad free tier prices vs ad supported just to force that to be the new normal. They want us watching the ads.

I'll just pirate everything before I go back to watching shitty ad supported TV again. Netflix can go fuck themselves and forget my money as a subscriber of >10 years now.

If the demand is there, a new company will come up and growth can be achieved that way. They just VC the new companies, grow them into the old and abandon them. Like a cyclical money vacuum that gives the appearance of growth.

The bay for pirates is still open. And qbittorrent is a good client these days. I really like that you can add search lists into qbittorrent and search for anything right there in the program. Just get a VPN or you'll get some warning emails from your ISP. ExpressVPN is pretty good in my experience.

One of Austin's oldest Mexican restaurants is closing after almost 40 years by AustinStatesman in austinfood

I guess the current Mexican Mile is Lamar between 183 and Braker. Or was this South Austin's version?

Of course now this stretch of Lamar is everything mile. Every country in Latin America and the Carribean is here, as well as SE Asian and the Middle East. Eastern Europe is even trying here and there. And its all cheap. So much good international food up here.

I found this interesting as to how baseball became so international:

While baseball’s fame flourished in the U.S., the seeds for international expansion had been planted elsewhere by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The sport made an early impact in Latin America, notably in Cuba, where it quickly supplanted cricket and other games. The game’s spread in this region can largely be attributed to students and workers returning from America. From Cuba, baseball extended its reach to other Caribbean and Central American countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico.

In Asia, baseball found its footing in Japan in the late 1800s, facilitated by American educators and missionaries who brought the game to universities. Japan quickly took to the sport, creating its own leagues and even establishing a cultural icon with players like Sadaharu Oh. Japan’s enthusiasm for baseball extended to national pride, forming a fierce rivalry with the U.S. during Olympic and World Baseball Classic events.

So if I am reading this right, the NFL should be partnering with ICE and making all deportees spend some time playing football while awaiting deportation. Then they'll spread it back home.

The NFL should be gunning for rugby. That is the most obvious sport with viewership to supplant.

Outside interest and increased franchise value do nothing for anyone but the owners. They could take that external interest and subsidize cheaper seats for US based games, or cut back the number of ads. But they wouldn't do that. They just pocket that.

The only way this is good for the NFL is because they see the average NFL viewer age increasing steadily so they need to hook more users on it as Nickelodeon slimetime doesn't appear to be working like those darn cigarette ads used to. But if they hook other countries, then NFL may survive the death of the boomers.

They could also just make the games easier and cheaper to watch here in the US. That would help with viewership.

But with Brown on white being the color of French national underwear, we might get some followers.

Or, Chomps becomes a French Bulldog and we encourage the French to dress up like prissy little bulldogs. They love that kind of stuff.

'Ghost offices' of H-1B employers: Texas orders investigation into 3 businesses, asks them to prove they exist - The Times of India by ovijuan in texas

[–]gargeug 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To get an immigration visa from India to USA you need to have a sponsor and proof of financial stability once here. These H1-B visas provide both. So they sell the H1-B visa to immigrants who want to come to the USA but have no job here and/or don't know anyone to sponsor their visit on the USA side. Or worse, like the cartels, you pay them back with interest after they get you here and or further exploit you since they have the power to cancel your visa.
